Berry and Morley thoughts on the secondary

Berry's playmaking ability is best suited in a position where he can roam some, and Safety is the best spot for him. When he is constantly stuck on someone, his ability is lost.

Vinson isn't further up the depth chart because he handling some academic stuff and Fulmer is letting him take care of that first.

Here's to hoping Willingham is always covering the other team's best receiver.

There aren't many playmakers any bigger than Deion Sanders and Champ Bailey. They've done just fine on the corner. Eric would excel at any DB spot. He plays safety because he's got the size and is a fine tackler.

I have to agree. I think we all can agree that Berry is as fast or quick as anyone on defense or on the team for that matter. With his mental makeup, he should be able to play any of the db spots and excel. Besides the defensive line, I think Berry could be an all-american at any position on defense. For those of you who would question him at middle linebacker, I feel that he could put on 25 pounds and do just fine. He might lose a little speed adding that much weight but he would still be considered ridiculously fast at that position. He has a natural ability to make plays no matter where he lines up. After reading that he has gained speed, strength, and quickness due to the weight training program, I can't wait to see what he will do this year.

Heck Deion Sanders got "burned" in his career. The thing that was so impressive about Berry was that he had his side of the field under control most of the game as a true freshman last year.

I watched it and I agree with you. As good as he was as a freshman there was room for improvement. I can't wait to see him this year. One thing I noticed in the Vanderbilt game, even if he got out of place from time to time, he would still clean your clock. Man that boy can hit!
I still feel sorry for the Wisconsin QB!

Yea maybe in middle schoool. Deion is the best cover corner to play the game and i dont recall anytime a receiver burned Deion who ran the 40 in 4.2 seconds.

Deion was notorious for either intercepting the ball or getting beat for a TD. He got burnt all the time.

Eric Berry is a great Safety because he watches the quarterback and reads where the play is going. And yes he got burnt a lot last year. Twice in the Florida game for 2 touchdowns. Morley and Berry just read the field so well together that its gonna be very tough to feed a pass across the middle or down the sideline. Both Morley and Berry are not the best cover DB they just have a good understanding of where the play is going before it happens and Willingham is gonna be a lockdown corner..We have a lot of Depth at the DB position right now and if we get good coverage out of our Linebackers this year we could really be a hard team to move the ball on.

I can see Morley being the best cover guy actually. He is a natural DB and can stick to a guy like glue but UT needs him to play safety and that is harder for him. Most of his blown coverage at safety are all mental mistakes as it takes a lot more thinking to play safety. But if you were to tell Morley to line up 7 yards from that guy and don't let him catch a pass hes going to be all over it....I was thinking maybe they could tinker with the idea of maybe moving Morley back to DB and letting Willingham play a little safety? I think that could work out nice.

DeMo and Berry are obviously great cover guys, even though both have blown assignment in zone coverage.

I've never seen DeMo or Berry get blown by or juked out of their shoes man to man - it's a "I thought you had him type of thing."

I hope that our CBs are good enough and Chavis is smart enough to play more man/press coverage and let one or both safeties roam. Just mix in a zone occasionally.

I think that is a bit of a stretch. He did gamble more than other corners but he could make up for it, except near the end of his career when he played the same but physically couldn't do it anymore. He was "notorious" for two things mainly: 1) never being thrown at and taking a receiver out of the game, 2) gambling, getting beat, and still having the closing speed to make up for it by the time the ball got to the receiver. Players talked about his closing speed being competely off the charts.

The thing is Berry can hit and cover something Sanders couldn't. Truth: Sanders is the best ever at covering but he wouldn't hit nothin but a baseball with a bat.:eek:k:

everyone knows that Deion was somewhat "soft" for a defensive player but his ability to shadow WRs on their routes made him special, imo

I think there's a big difference between getting burned and either a) being caught out of position or b) miss timing the jump in the endzone on one of those touchdowns or just gambling. Berry really never got "burned". A good example of a burn would be Johnson in the Southern Miss game or Gaines in Alabama 05'..

Atleast thats my opinion of a "burn" where you straight up run toe to toe with them and they just flat out beat you in a foot race due to speed or good route running.

Berry is a low key guy. He does not like to bragg about himself and hates it when people bragg about him. As one of the nations best cornerbacks in high school, he received little hype and proved his skills on the field his freshman year. Don't look for this guy to admit he is the best. Just watch him play.

Where did Berry play in the SECCG? Because it'd have been nice to get the TD back that he blew the coverage on.
