Being dominant at one thing covers up the weaknesses everywhere else

Ask Auburn. Sure there are some holes that need to be addressed before the season starts, but honestly there is not a more dominant passing game east of California out there.

Who can single cover Hunter?
Who can single cover Rogers?
The O-Line with all of its deficiencies in the run game made huge strides in pass protection (3rd I believe in SEC just barely behind LSU and Bama).

If you put Da'Rick in the slot with Patterson on the outside who can single cover him? The "best" nickel in the country got drug around like a rag doll when he tried to cover him last year. There's not a team out there that can play man coverage against Rogers, Hunter, and Patterson (even if Patterson doesn't fully understand the playbook). We will see a lot of soft zone, and the more mature Bray will find all the soft spots in it. If fully healthy all year, we can be average in every other facet of the game and win 9 games if the passing game is as dominant as it should be. No more excuses.

Not to mention we should be able to run (at least a little) on a soft zone if we're even decent on the ground.

I agree with you. We have the potential of being unstoppable in the passing game.

Agree. The only thing that would stop it would be massive amounts of injuries or Jim Chaney. There's no other scenario in which the passing game should not be top 3 in the country.

that same Chaney had the offense rolling until Jhunter went down - i get it that it was early, but they looked awesome against Cincy who ended up with a pretty good record

I would much rather be a dominant running team.

A lot more can happen that can throw off a passing team.

That being said, even without CP, the passing game will be hard to stop at times.

If our defense is still developing this season, then we will have to win some shoot outs against teams.
We can't stop them, due to our defense still developing and they can't stop our passing attack.
Our team may resemble a University of Hawaii team or a University of Houston team of a few seasons ago.

OP - you're treating C Patt like he's already all-sec and he's not even on campus yet, and is a true freshman when it comes to the playbook.....reign it in a little.

Grades......you can't be good if you aren't on the field. Here's to hoping for a solid spring and summer for the vols!

I think our run game will take a dramatic leap forward this year to really hurt anyone we play bc of our deadly pass attack. Our run game will be good enough to keep defenses honest. If everyone stays healthy, honestly I don't see how we couldn't play in a bcs bowl game. We have the talent to beat every team on our schedule, even bama...though that'll be a fight.

Apparently you missed the little tidbit after the one and only time I mentioned Patterson. Not surprising considering the source. If Da'Rick and Hunter are getting all the attention, talent alone will have Patterson dominating one on one.

Jim Chaney is underrated, IMO. If we switch to an uptempo offense like many believe, we will be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

And Hunter is coming off an ACL. I need to see them on the field before I buy into how good the offense is.

I agree that there are no more excuses. No reason why 9 wins (not including a bowl) isn't attainable this year, anything less would be a disappointment and grounds for a new coach, IMO.

We're talking CP here. The guy is a physical specimen. This ain't the NFL. He will present some very serious physical mismatches with the majority of DB's we play. 6'3" 200+ sub 4.4 will be going against 5'10" 185 maybe 4.5. We don't need no stinkin' play book. Just go long long big boy and we'll chuck it to ya. They can't double cover 'em all. If they all stay healthy 400 yard passing games will be the norm against anyone who can't get pressure on Bray. That's everyone this side of Bama. Maybe we're still losing 42-38 but it should be alot of fun to watch.:pepper::pepper:

Exactly. Hunter hasn't even had live scrimmage work has he? Just one on one drills? Even if he says he feels 100%, the mental aspect is hard to gauge. Also, on Patt - I hope heks awesome, but history shows juco WRs rarely live up to the hype.

the truth about tennessee's passing game lies somewhere between the cincinnati and kentucky games

Yeah Cincinnati - everyone healthy

By Kentucky - not so much

Bray was back but you don't miss 6 games with a broken thumb and pick up where you left off plus no Hunter and a bunch of guys who apparently would have rather been doing something else.:banghead2:

More than anything the 2012 version of the Vols needs a couple or more team leaders. Not rah-rah types but the kinds of kids who go full speed every down, and NEVER take a play much less a game off. JMO

I completely disagree. I think Chaney has been one of the most overrated coaches on staff since he has been here.
