Somebody asked me the other day "No offense, but why do you like the Vols? They sucked the last few years." I looked at him in disgust. I told him that I'll get back to him tomorrow and send him a message. I said there is too much to tell him in one sitting. Here's what I wrote.
1) The color orange. I heard that the color orange stands for tenacity. And you know what a Tennessee Vol is? Tenacious. From the athletes to the coaches to the fans, Volunteers get after it. There is nothing like seeing 100K dressed in that beautiful UT orange (not that God forsaken Texas crap). I love our uniforms and the orange. I am proud to wear Tennessee orange. I think it's awesome.
2) The checkerboard endzone. Is there anything cooler? Seriously? And the best part is that it's ours. Nobody has copied and had it work, and we know you are just copying Tennessee. It's a traditon that nobody else can have. I even have a checkerboard tie. It's just an awesome design.
3) General Neyland. The guy was a genius. He was the greatest coach of his era, and I don't need stats to prove it. Just one quote "Everyone knows I'm the best damn coach in the country. But I learned everything from Coach Neyland."-Bear Bryant. Anytime your biggest rival's best coach says that about your best coach, you know you had a great one.
4) Rocky Top. Some people get annoyed by it. I don't care. There is nothing better than a Vol TD, 100K are absolutely screaming "Rocky Top, you'll always be..." it gives you chill. Brings a smile to my face everytime.
5) The Nickname. I love it. It embodies the entire state. It's not something cliche' like the Tigers, Bears, Eagles. It's not some dumb condem logo. It's not something named after a state tree. It's unique, and it embodies Tennessee. We are volunteers is this state. The Tennessee Volunteers is perfect.
And last, but not least. It's in your blood. You have orange in your blood. There isn't a bandwaggon like the Yankees, or the Bammers, or the Lakers/Celtics. You are a Volunteer forever. There is nothing like it. I don't care if we never win another title, I'd rather be a Vol than a Gator, a Bammer, or whatever the hell else there is.. That's what it is like to be a Tennessee Volunteer.
Go Vols! :hi:
