Some down here in Georgia are saying that UGA just got their best class ever.
We only got 3 players out of Georgia this cycle.
Historically, our program has thrived off of state of Georgia talent.

So, why not find out who are considered UGA's best recruiters and see if we could match them up with a position to coach. Then, go to President DiPietro with a request for a big check to lure that coach to UT.
We would be strengthening our recruiting staff while hurting one of our big eastern division rivals.

Here's a link to Georgia's staff...at bottom of link.

I think it is hard to lure great coaches/recruiters to UT right now with an administration that is so passive about athletics and clearly in no hurry to hire an AD. UT is still a top-10 job, but isn't appealing for those looking to climb the ladder right now. What you're saying, I totally get and agree. I just don't know if it is viable in our current state.

Side Note: UGA always recruits well. Nobody does less with more.

Smart is in a similar to position that Jones was in 3 or 4 years ago. He's selling an idea and recruits are buying it. He has one more class or so of that before he's gonna have to stand on what that idea actually produces. If he makes it payoff on the field and in player development he will open the door to more similar classes in the future. If not, his classes will slip and his chances of surviving will dwindle.

One advantage Jones should have opposite of Smart is that he has passed the timeline of selling what you re gonna do, into the area of here is what we are doing and have done.

True.
But, he would great relationships with Georgia/Atlanta high school coaches.
We just HAVE to start getting some more 4 star type guys out of Georgia to get back to the top of college football.
Remember that Atlanta is only 3 hours from Knoxville.
We should consider it (again) a MAJOR part of our recruiting imprint. Go Vols!

It's just the new coach bump IMO

Don't buy into it until they sustain it over years

You are addressing Smarts success and I hope, with you, that it is only temporary.
But, how do you feel about us only getting 3 players from Georgia this cycle?

Except that Jones hasn't really done what he wanted. I wouldn't call it advantage Jones in this instance.

I believe the dip in recruiting is due to a) new coaches like new watches attract attention, b) we were changing several position coaches at the last minute, c) injuries, d) losing to USCe and Vandy, e) not going to bigger and better bowl game, and f) the Bama dynasty/Saban phenomena. I believe our coaches did a great job given those constraints. Hopefully we can avoid injuries, take Georgia Tech in the opener, and not lose to teams in the bottom half of the SEC.

Hell I could recruit the state of Georgia. They produce top notch talent every year and UGA doesn't have to make much effort to keep them instate.

I still think smart isn't that great. Now if the guys surrounding him are and he lets them do their thing, it'll be a problem. Totally off topic, but I'll throw in that I'm still not impressed with Eason.

The same way I feel about the fact Jones had back to back top 5 classes

Which is, the largest influence on where a recruit lands is not the human being recruiting them.

Instead it's the combination of numerous external factors

Spot on. This is what makes last year's collapse and the blown leads the year before so devastating. In the end, winning ball games is what matters.

UT has to pull players from GA. There are plenty of them to be had even if GA gets its share. Its probably the most important state we recruit. Couple that with only pulling 4 of the top 15 (all 4*s and above) from TN and you have a down year.

This is more than just grabbing a good recruiter(s) from successful recruiting teams.
The product is the product. Right now UGA doesn't have to defend it because it hasn't been there long enough to be realized. UT doesn't have that luxury.

Maybe if we could move Neyland or maybe the campus entirely to Marietta, then we could just keep our current staff. That would do it.

This may be the bigger issue for this class. Why is it that the State of Tennessee was loaded with elite players this year, and we landed only 4 out of the top 15 (Rivals). I know we didn't want em' all, but that % is too low. Land 3 more of those guys and this class looks different.

Because maybe they didn't want to go to UT when there are lots of schools just as close. Not everyone in the state Is a UT fan

Exactly. We pulled some highly touted players from Georgia over the years even though some of them didn't pan out. (Preston Williams)

Uga almost always get the players they want from Georgia. However, they have not been very successful at winning the SEC. We will beat them again in 2017.

College football is more like a business for the elite recruits. Childhood fan will hold some weight but I don't think it's that heavy.

IIRC one of our best players in this class was an instate guy that was a Bama fan growing up.

What can you do for me?

I'm just not sure this is an advantage for Jones....and it shows in this recruiting class.....:salute:
