Beer Barrel

I could have sworn the Beer Barrel was locked up somewhere inside Neyland Stadium (beneath the stands). Last I read about it, anyway. Also I vote to bring it back. It was a unique and fun rivalry trophy celebrating part of Appalachian and regional history and while I can understand maybe avoiding references that year because of the accident, the permanent halt was and is an overreaction. And, I mean, when you put that whole "no more Beer Barrel" stance next the fact we just had a vote to allow beer and alcohol sales at Neyland ... yeah. Bring the damn Barrel back, people.

While I'm not saying your wrong. And we are being politically corrected to death. It's absurd
I think the fact some people may connect barrel to a keg and a keg to a party and party to bing drinking to drunk driving. I just think it's a little tacky to use as a trophy when your a learning institute and a large portion of your students are under aged.

That’s a complete reach, perpetrated by the political correctness crowd, please don’t fall for it.

If that’s how you want to connect it then I can certainly give you another reach.

The “beer barrel” is for root beer, a non alcoholic beverage. It works both ways.

Years ago, all they had to do was put out a statement condemning underage drinking and that the trophy in no way condones underage drinking of a alcoholic beer.

Maybe, we should start a petition to bring it back as the non-alcoholic beer barrel. We can rename it the root beer barrel.

Just my two cents.

Just because kids drink and drive, we lost one of the best trophies in college football.

Anyone who correlates the beer barrel trophy with driving drunk is a political correctness hack and incapable of rational thought.

Ok, man. Whatever you say.

Any thoughts on a new trophy that might encourage desirable behavior from the student body?

Make the new trophy a car, painted half orange and half blue with the winning scores from each game on the respective side. Paint the roof white with the phrase "Don't Drink and Drive" in black, so it can be seen from the stands.

C'mon man, you're showing your arse.

Two kids died because Tim Couch's starting Center was driving drunk and went to prison. One of the kids was a D lineman, and one of the kids was Couch's best friend.

Maybe they should replace the Barrel with a set of keys, or raise money for folks' medical expenses who get creamed by drunk drivers?

While I understand and can even somewhat agree with your point, I can also see the other side of it. Drinking beer doesn't make you drive drunk. I drink. I just don't do it to excess. I take the personal responsibility to not drink and drive.

I fully support your right to choose not to drink. I expect others to fully support my right to choose to drink in an acceptable way that doesn't endanger others.

So, while I understand why they chose to no longer use it as a trophy, I would not judge those that would choose to use it as a trophy. It's an inanimate object that has no intrinsic value or motive.

I think you make a very salient point here. Is it hypocritical to single out Tennessee in stopping the Beer Barrel? I specifically mention Tennessee since Kentucky still has a Bourbon Trophy.

UT’s administration caved to the political correctness crowd when they should have ignored them and issued a statement saying they don’t condone underage drinking or drinking and driving while still playing for the beer barrel every season.

Imho, you have to stand for something or you will fall for anything.
