I thought you were complimenting Freak when I first opened the thread.

Yeah, I thot we were getting another site upgrade or app. Then I started thinking, maybe VG is saying beautiful SITE for the game instead of beautiful SIGHT for the eyes. So I held my snarky self aggrandizing comments for some other needy poster. :,-)

I was stationed in Jax at Cecil Field (now closed) in early 70's. Tickets cost me $5.00 ea back then and the Gator Bowl was a dump. This was long before the NFL was there. Can't remember much about who played. Vol Nation- represent us well, and GBO!!!

Tennessee was the first to use the Tartan Turf and I believe it was installed in 1968. From previous players it was like playing on asphalt, nothing like the turf fields of today.

I got to be on it once. It was enough. As to the turf fields of today, I have seen a few. And I think they look like crap. Yeah the lines might look better. And when I played, I am not nostalgic how we ended Thursday practice early to line the field. But I will always prefer a real grass field over any kind of artificial turf.

To this day, what I am nostalgic about when I played was the smell of the freshly cut grass. It filling my senses during warm ups. Personally, I feel the inventors, installers, and fans of artificial turf will be gathered together in the ninth circle of Hell. And if there is football in Heaven, it will be played on natural grass.
