Did you know that it is empirically possible to go 4-4 in the SEC, win your division, and go to Atlanta? It has never been done (3 or 4 teams have gone 5-3 and made it, but none 4-4), but it is possible. Trick is, one division has to be a LOT weaker than the other division, leading to something near an 0-14 cross-division record (I was able to tweak it up to 3-11, but couldn't find a way to get it any higher). If most every team in one division starts out 0-2 because of losses to the other side, there come scenarios where a team that gets 4-2 in division can win it.

*shudder* I know, ugly to imagine. But possible.

Let's just hope we never see it, at least not in the East. :)

I'm honesty becoming obsessed with beating Florida. We've only beaten Florida 6 times IN MY LIFETIME, and only won back to back games once.

Last time we beat UF I had never taken a college exam. Now I have a Ph.D. and I'm the one writing exams. I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! ARGH!

Back in 1987, a group of us went to the Bama game in B'ham and I believe the week prior Memphis State beat Bama. So before the game we were all, "Memphis State this...and Memphis State that."........Well, UT managed to get it handed to them that night.

Oh, I'm not going to talk any trash. Nothing needs to be said and I don't want to end up eating my words. I just also don't want to get spit on and if they think maybe I'm an enthusiastic wrestling fan who goes to Georgia Southern or something I'll escape without getting urine on me.

I was at that Memphis- Alabama game. Alabama had more fans than Memphis did, and at half time the Tigers introduced their new live tiger mascot (Tom). The Bama fans started chanting "Kill Tom! Kill Tom" lol. Then Memphis came back out and beat them with a goal line stand to end the game lol.

Everyone has their own opinions and motivations for which choice they take. That being said, I'll respectfully disagree that a season with 2 significant wins and no SECe "championship" signifies the same thing for the program as a 10 win season and appearance in the SEC championship game. Jmo.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but you know why I hate f-ing florida? Look what some azzhole posted on the Memphis board in response to teams living in the past:

"I can answer this!! Tennessee fans incessantly talk about the past. That's pretty much all they do. But here is a historical fact a Vandy grad told me the other day that I thought was interesting.
While it's true that since 1975, Vandy has only beaten Tennessee 5 times, in that same time period, Tennessee has only beaten Florida 6 times?"

I HATE FLORIDA!!! I can't believe we let them off the hook last year. Damn it season hurry up and get here.

While true, we used to not play Florida every year like we do Vanderbilt.

Since 1990, Tennessee is a dreadful 6-19 against Florida. Vanderbilt is 3-22 against Tennessee. Still not much better against the Gators than Vandy is against us.

SIAP but we could lose the east (one game against UGA) but win the rest of our games (including UF and Bama) and have an outside chance at making it into the tournament. Either way I want to beat UF and Bama so bad I can taste it so...that one.

the sec east should be way down this year---UGa is the only team that UT has to worry about. Fla will suck and usc and missouri lost a ton of talent.

This^^^^. Ending 2 streaks in the same year and not making it to the SEC championship game would be less than winning the East. Winning the East eases the pain of either or both of the streaks continuing and you're playing 14 football games instead of 13 or maybe just 12.

Beating Bama in 82 was the highlight of 82, but it really only signified that Bama was slipping, not that UT was really improving that much. Also lost to Duke and Vandy that year. Beat Bama and lost to Florida in 85 in the Sugar Bowl year, but only got to go because Florida (who ran the table in the SEC) was on probation. Wouldn't trade a win over Florida for that night in New Orleans ever. Beating Florida now, while they are down, is no big accomplishment other than we haven't been able to do it previously because of our own ineptness, not because Florida is some juggernaut. Beating the Gators this year is not worthy of tearing down the goal posts. That would be a backhanded compliment. Just a sign of how far this program has slipped.
