Be realistic, who can you see Tennessee hiring for a basketball coach?

Do we agree that Marshall doesn't answer the phone unless $3 mil is on the other end of the call?

no, because he's only slated to make 1.75 mil this next year, and that's with a raise. and he currently has to live in kansas (originally from south carolina and has interviewed at TN twice).

Byrd would win. But would not make a splash. Hart hired Butch and it seems like a perfect fit and marriage? Do we trust him to do it again with another lesser known coach?

I do. You trust him till he proves he can't get the job done. Hart offered Zo twice the raise I would have. Zo decided to walk, I say don't give it a second thought. $$ will be better spent on the next coach.

Should have hired Rick Byrd last time and this time. But they won't, it makes too much sense. He is one of the best in the country. Ask coaches, K, Roy Williams, and Shaka Smart about Rick Byrd. They don't want to play Belmont. He's 60 but so what, he can coach a good 10 years or so. Get behind this Volnation.
Agreed. Byrd has done work at Belmont and actually wants to coach at UT and did last time the job was open as well. Apparently they never gave him a call back...

Martin leaving saves us from having to buy him out in 2 years. I want a coach that wants to be here. Martin never really embraced Knoxville and it showed.

2.5 may get him.

I looked and Marshall made 1.6 in 2013 and will make 1.75 this year. He gets a 125,000.00 raise. Martin was offered 500,000.00 and walks? As I said, let him go.

Not sure what UT was paying Zo's top 3 assistants, but it looks like Marshall's deal includes: "As a part of the revised contract agreement, Marshall will have an increased salary pool of $501,000 for his three full-time assistants and Director of Basketball Operations".

Looks like Marshall looks out for his guys. Maybe that would be an in for UT. Pony up some extra $$ for the assistant pool.

No coach wants to come here. We run them out of town for winning games and going to the sweet 16. We are a dysfunctioning dumpster fire

Its amazing some people still believe we can pull a coach like marshall. Was the gruden saga not enough for you guys? What coach in their right mind would want to come here after a petition to run our winning coach out of town comes along every year? Prepare for disappointment and history to repeat itself

Marshall coaches Wichita State, not the LA Lakers.

You may be on to something. Marshall would be a major upgrade in my opinion. Marshall to TN would be the splash hire of the year with major positive publicity.

I would be excited if they hired Marshall. He's definitely an upgrade over Martin.

My list in order (realistically). Marshall and Smart are not realistic. Home runs, but not realistic.

1. Ben Howland - I dont know how we can pass on his resume. Instantly the 2nd best Xs and Os coach in the league

2. Chris Mack - I know Cal tried for him, but if we were willing to pay Cuonzo 1.8, we could give Mack 2 mil and make him blink.

3. Tim Miles - nice career, winning at multiple levels. big program promoter. may not leave Nebraska after just 2 seasons

4. Archie Miller - risky, but could be a case of catching the star before it takes off

5. Keith Dambrot - Off the radar, but really a nice coaching resume. Has a skeleton, but so did Bruce. In fact story a little like Bruce.

No, that isnt what happened. A few people on a message board got a petition together for him to be fired at a time when he expected and deserved to be fired. Then lightening struck and he made a tourny run. Now he thinks he is Coach K. Screw Martin. I seriously doubt we ever make it back to the sweet 16 if he stays here. You will probably hear about as much about him going forward as you do Buzz.

Marshall has a very good team returning next year. He is almost assured of going to the tournament. He may not want to rebuild at TN.
