I really thought they might do it. There was an obvious hole in their alignment that was really apparent from where I was sitting. My last words before the kick to the guy beside me were “they’re begging to get onside kicked”.

I thought they might as in there's a slight chance, but didn't really think we would.

Would you have called for it ? I'll be honest and tell you that I wouldn't have no matter their alignment, maybe with less than 4 mins, but with over 4 and a half mins and all 3 TOs left I just don't think I would've pulled that trigger. Glad Pruitt did though.

At the game, we agreed kick and play D. I just finished watching on TV, and there was an obvious hole in the coverage there. Great, great call.

Honestly, it didn't even have to be as "perfect" as some types of onside kicks. Just get it in that gap and give our guys the chance.

Very few coaches would’ve taken that chance there. Which is really why it was so brilliant. But as good as that call was there were a lot of puzzling decisions as well. For one...continually throwing the ball down near the goal line (when the run game got us down there to begin with), not giving Maurer an opportunity earlier in the game, going into a prevent defense once we got the lead late which allowed them to get into scoring position, and not adjusting/using a spy to stop the qb run.
You don't spy a QB that is that unathletic. You just need everyone to focus up and do their job. At most the only scheme change you could make would be stunting the D-line. I did not note us going into any type of prevent but may have just not noticed.

I haven’t watched the replay so I don’t know what they showed on TV, but it was crazy how big the split was between the two guys on the right at the front of their return formation. It was a gutsy call but it didn’t even need to be a perfect kick.

Didn’t see it coming, and wouldn’t have called it. Anyone who says they would’ve Is prob lying. Every stat and expert out there will say with that time left you kick it and play D. BUT CJP obviously saw something in his game planning. It paid off. It’s really a defining moment for him I believe, even though we should’ve been up 30 at that point.

This worked so he’s a genius. Had it not, and we handed the ball to IU with that field position, it was likely a dagger. Had it not worked people would be screaming for his job today.
I disagree with it being a dagger if we don't get it. I think we had good odds of a 3 and out with the way our defense stuffed the run all night.

B I wouldn’t have. Did everyone notice Brooks doing his normal routine before that kick? He placed the ball and then turned his back towards IU and did his normal jump in the air where he brings his legs up to stretch his leg muscles. It was a total act. Loved it.

He sold it very, very well. Good coaching.

LOL
A - no I would not have called it with all 3 TO left and over 4 minutes left. Shows why he is head ball coach and I am sitting here typing this on a message board I guess.
B- Absolutely did not think he would. In fact below is a message I was in the process of typing in response to someone else saying that Indiana would pass the ball once they rec the kickoff. As you can see in mid thought my reaction to what had happened lol. I didn't even go back and erase just went right into HOLY CRAP when I saw it lol. As it turns out it was the perfect time because obviously IU had no inclination that he would either. BIG BRASS DANGLERS that paid off YUGE.

Surely they wont throw it. Holy crap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I did not even think about an onside kick.

I will say this, that was one Hell of a call and in my opinion his best call of the season.

How odd that you have exactly the same number of likes as posts? Pretty impressive.

A - Would you as a head coach last night called for that onside kick with over 4 and half minutes to play and all 3 times out left ?

B - Think that Pruitt was going to call for it ?
Yes
Yes

The way IU was moving the ball late the onside kick was definitely in play.

Pruitt likes the onside kick. Something that the last 3 UT coaches rarely if ever used and when used, without success. If you go back and look at Pruitt's previous onside attempts, the only failed by a gnat's eyelash. I thought then, he's gonna have this work someday.

The locker room interviews with Tim Priest added more information. They interviewed both Eric Gray and Paxton Brooks. Both said they work in it every Thursday in practice. Paxton's interview was interesting in that he said (paraphrasing) - there is a lot of luck involved in an onside kick. The ball has to take that hop up in the air and sometimes it doesn't happen. Also said that as a kicker, you have to start the motion as if you are going to kick deep to get the element of surprise, and the hard part is, adjusting the stride to do the onside. They saw a gap in the way IU lined up and the call was on . Not sure if it was recognized on previous kicks and they had it in there pocket to use, or if it was called real time.

Thing is- it worked. And it worked about as perfect as could be expected. We blame Pruitt and coaching when things go wrong, but how about giving him coaching credit when things go right. This didn't just happen without a ton of practice going into it. Bottom line, it changed an L to a W. I'll take it.

I think the call was mainly decided by the way IU lined up. Had the gap not been there I don’t think it would have been attempted.

As for the OP
A: with 3 TOs I would have kicked it.
B: nope... for same reasons above.

It totally caught me off guard. I was already crossing fingers for a 3 n Out.

After what seemed like 30 failed attempts prior, I was more surprised that we actually succeeded in recovering an onside kick than the attempt itself.

Great call though! I honestly think it rattled Indiana. It completely reversed the momentum of the game and it put them on their heels.

he sucks as a punter but that was a heck of an acting job leading up to the kick off
His punting does leave a lot to be desired, especially considering we are “ Punter U” and have a long line of great ones. Makes me wonder what Joe Doyle did to piss Pruitt off because I thought he was pretty good. Paxton is great at kicking my off though

There's no way I would have called it....UNLESS, like Pruitt...we had been working on it every week and looking for just the right opportunity, NOT just anytime. I was totally surprised but as it developed, and watching the replays...you could tell this wasn't some "last-minute" harebrained gamble. You could tell...These guys have been working on this A LOT.
GOOD FOR CJP....!!
GBO.

Prolly not because the defense was playing well and forcing stops and yes, as you said, we have all timeouts.

B- After that recovery, all I thought of was how many times we were calling them last year. Sure we were outmanned a lot of games, and we need extra possessions. However, Pruitt is going to be someone that will take chances instead of play by the "chart" as a former coach had.....

One of those "genius if it works - idiot if it doesn't" deals. I would add that it has seemed to me that dumb luck has favored the vols more this season than previous seasons. It used to be that all the luck we had was bad. Now, the team seems to generate good luck, if that is real.
