I never thought I would care about BB recruiting but CBP has lit a fire under me as well.
Now for my question. I saw that Rivals has us ranked 12 and we have 4 guys signed. Can we get more and what are the odds of getting a big man? I saw were 2 are 6'7" and 6'8" but how about a 7 footer or would they not fit CBP style.

7 footers are few and far between...and rarely are they all that great. Ask UK fans how happy they are about their 7 footer...

I wouldn't want a 7 footer or anything close to that height if they're just a stick that gets pushed around all the time.

I watched Odon play on one of the High Def channels the other night. That is a 7 foot high schooler that can do some damage. Him and the other kid from that school going to Ohio State were down right impressive.

I dunno... he could prove me wrong, but I don't think he'll live up to all of that hype. I saw Oden get some of his shots blocked by guys that were like 6'5''... lol. Needs to put on some weight/muscle/even fat.

We are getting 3-4 big men in this class(Chism, Crews, Harris, Gilbert?) and look to get another 1-2 in next class. We will be fine, though none are 7'.

Not to sound like a broken record, but I wouldn't bother counting Harris. I see no circumstance under which he becomes a contributor.

Who cares about next year yet??? We have the biggest game of the year tomorrow, then we have the biggest game of the year on Saturday!

At 2:50, its on!

IDK, it is your opinion versus another's opinion. He has lost alot of weight, though he won't soon be running up and down the court with our guards and he has very soft hands for a man of his size. Some of the "experts" expect him to make some sort of a contribution. Sorry hat, but if it was between taking your opinion or theirs, I'd take theirs.

And no need to get uppity real, it is just speculation.

IMHO I would rather get up about tomorrow's game then get depressed about next year. Being a realist, the loss of Patterson will probably hurt more than losing Watson. Morris, Noah, and Davis are all sophomores, and next year might be a bumpy ride. However, once this class gets some experience under their belts, and Noah and Davis go pro, then we should once again be the cream of the crop in the East. Again, just my opinion, and my reason for living in the now for the next 17 days!

IMO, Crews will be better then Patterson, and yes I mean next year. He is a more polished, more explosive version of Dre with a better shooting touch.

I'm up for tomorrow and I'm not depressed about next year, I'm amped for it.

I'll only take offense if one of the "experts" you are referencing is Rob Lewis. I forget more about basketball during my morning jog than he knows.

Actually, UK has 3 seven footers, who have generally shown to be 21+ feet of worthlessness most of the year. Alyene (sp?) has shown some moments of good play, but mostly these projects have flopped (Carter is still a Frosh, but I've never actually seen him in a game. If you are behind Orbzut in the rotation, it is not a good sign.)

I think the intent of the thread are to ask whether we are going to see a "true center" on UT's roster in the coming years, whether he tops 84 inches or not. As for whether a guy like that would fit Pearl's system, let me just add that I can't think of a great team that has not had a true center as its anchor, regardless of style of play. And can you imagine Chris Lofton's game with a serious inside threat that caused defenses to collapse? Scary.

EDIT: I'd also add that one of UK's problems is that their 7footers haven't played well. With Morris on the floor, they are a good basketball team. When he sits, and he is foul prone, so he sits alot, they struggle. See the first half of the Bama game in the SECT for an example, albeit one in which Alyene had one of his rare shining moments.

Nice that you started caring about the BB recruiting.

Tark's UNLV teams in '90 and '91 didn't have a center as a focal point.

it depends on the system though, and Pearl's relys on a center
What? Neither Pearl, nor his mentor Tom Davis, have ever had a dominant center.

UNLV started Elmore Spencer, 7' center, from 90-92. As a Senior, he averaged 14.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He was selected 25th overall by the Clippers in the NBA draft.

Elmore Spencer never saw the floor with LJ, Augmon, Anthony, Anderson Hunt, etc. David Butler and George Ackles, not exactly household names, played the minutes at center. By the way, what do his '92 stats have to do with the '90 and '91 teams? All the stars were gone by then. Vegas was on probation and wasn't allowed to participate in the tournament. I will guarantee you Elmore Spencer was not the starter in the '90-'91 season.

In fact, it was 6'8" Jarvis Basnight, who could jump out of the gym.

Davis had Acie Earl, Iowa 1990-93, who played in the NBA as well as overseas professionally. I'm sure if you looked at the better teams, all had a competent big man, but I'm actually kinda tired of doing research to rebut your posts. Are you just trying to be argumentative?

EDIT: Spencer's '92 stats were posted because that was the first stat line that came up in my search. His '91 stats were more modest. He played 17 minutes a game, 6.4 pts, 4 rbs, 2.5 blocks.

Elmore Spencer had nothing to do with UNLV success in those days. I played in an all-state game against him and he was the worst center playing in that game. Furthermore, UGA kicked him out as a freshman for being a piece of *&$# on and off the floor and was far better off for it.

Jarvis Basnight played with Armon Gilliam, Freddie Banks, and Gerald Paddio in the late '80s. He didn't play with Johnson, Augmon, etc.
