Unfortunately, WV will test the Vols secondary early and often come Sept 1 and fans will get an early view of what to expect going forward...... Good or bad
Go Vols
eh. WVU's offensive style presents a match up that won't necessarily repeat itself on the schedule, maybe until we play MO, but even then, the two passing games are a little different.

if we get torched, i don't know that it says anything more than what many of us think we know about this defense to be honest.

if we line up and do well, then i think you can say we're better than we think we are.

that's about it. i'd expect us to flash at times against WVU, and struggle at times. the other thing we don't know is the actual game plan and how they've chosen to match up against this offense, and how that game will differ others for the rest of the opponents on the schedule.

Just watch how good Stephen Griffin plays for NC State this year and eventually in the NFL. Guys tend to play great once they get away from Butch Jones. Look no further than Emmanuel Moseley who is about to play himself into a roster spot with the 49ers. Latroy Lewis has played himself into a roster spot with the Texans. Jason Croom is doing the same with the Bills. And that's not counting our drafted guys like Kamara that are already household names and NFL superstars.

The 2016 Vols will be remembered in a few years as the most talented team in college football history that accomplished the least. That team was filled with NFL talent up and down the roster. Here are just some of the names that will be playing in the NFL for a very long time:

QB Joshua Dobbs
RB Alvin Kamara
RB John Kelly
WR Josh Malone
WR Marquez Callaway
WR/TE Jalen Hurd
TE Jason Croom
G Kahlil McKenzie
DE Derek Barnett
DE Kyle Phillips
DE Latroy Lewis
DT Shy Tuttle
LB Daniel Bituli
LB Darrell Taylor
LB Darrin Kirkland Jr.
LB Austin Smith
CB Cam Sutton
CB Emmanuel Moseley
CB Baylen Buchanan
S Nigel Warrior
S Stephen Griffin

That's 21 NFL players on a single college team and they didn't win more than 9 games. This will be looked at as one of the greatest rosters in college football history with the single worst coach ever.

I'm afraid you are going way overboard with this rant, even knowledgeable Vol fans will disagree with your opinion, which misses the Mark by some distance, unfortunately.
I get your point of good talent being wasted, but that's about it.
Go Vols

You're right and hopefully its better than recent years. Tired of seeing them get smoked in the secondary but i really think a lot of it was poor coaching but only time will tell and that time is approaching

Poor coaching and poor recruiting from you know who

How do you know this? The kid has barely played, and when he has played he's gotten roasted. Has Pruitt given you exclusive access to all the practices? lol

Corner will be a weak spot in 2018 and probably 2019, until Pruitt can recruit some corners and really put his stamp on that group. Corner play has been atrocious at Tennessee for a number of years now. Before Cam Sutton, the last Tennessee cornerback to be drafted was Jonathan Wade in 2007.

For all the position groups to get high on and troll about, I suggest you pick another, because corner is one of the weakest position groups for us and has been for a long time.
I hope you’re wrong. Supposedly Alonte Taylor is an elite athlete and Pruitt is an elite DB coach. Pruitt is going to coach up aggressive press coverage, and if D4H is right we may see a big leap in the performance at that position. Sep 1 will tell us a lot about how much improvement we’ve made in one preseason with the new staff.

i think the CB's have potential to be pretty good this year. that said, two of the guys in the two deep, one of which is starting, are true freshmen. they'll make mistakes, and they'll make plays. we're probably just gonna have to live some some growing pains there....but the upside with guys like George, Taylor and Thompons is definitely there. depth is still an issue for this season.

and buchannon has earned a starting spot, i'd have to say that is a good thing considering he at least has some experience, and the coaches think he's done the work to earn it.

i think this is one position that stands the most chances of improving...a lot...between now and hte end of the season.

slippery slope to put too much stock in to the first game, when you're breaking in some young guys at the positioin and their first game is against a heisman candidate at qb and an AA's at WR.

i would imagine we'll see some good, and some bad....

I can live with the growing pains as long as I see improvement and good effort I will never complain.. If a football team loses to a better team that is fine. It was the losing to teams worse than us and players quitting that really pisses me off. Hopefully those days are behind us and we play good football

agreed. there's a difference in "losing" a game and getting beat. i think most can live with "getting beat". can't have games like 2013, 14, 15, 17 FL, or 2015 OU or 2015 Arkansas, pick a vandy game we lost lately etc...where you just found ways to lose, or games where you get blown out of the water and wonder if you can ever get back to being competitive again.......

the eye test will be important. i remember three games that even in losses, you felt like "ok, we can work with this..."....the 2013 GA game, 2015 Bama game and 2016 aTm game. in all three of those games, even in losing, i didn't come away thinking "man, we got a long way to go". i think that kind of sentiment for this season coming out of some games will be important.

I was watching 2016 highlights that year the Vols should have been in the play offs if they would have had good coaching and learned to finish.

Agreed, I wouldn’t draw too much from it if we have a poor or inconsistent performance; however, if we shut their studs down, it will be a really good sign for what’s to come.
