Battle @ Bristol ...surrounding area

I am coming down from PA for the VTech game in September. Gonna go to Chattanooga for a few days and then head up north for the game. Problem is hotels are booked in Bristol already.

Are their any cool towns, or towns with decent attractions within an hour of Bristol?

We are considering Pigeon Forge or Seiverville's indoor water park, but really don't want to drive that far south after the game only to head back up north to PA the next day.

Sorry...didn't mean to put on recruiting page. Mod, please move. Thanks

The Wilderness WatePark in Sevierville is known to have a bed bug problem . You may want to scratch that option off your list.

Whatever else you do, try to make a stop at Ridgewood BBQ, about 15 min. south of the speedway in Bluff City. The best BBQ. Period.

(I'm guessing 100,000 other peple might have the same idea, though, and the place is kinda small.)

I moved to PA a couple years ago but lived in the tri cities area for almost a decade and will also be attending the game down there.

There are many hidden gems as far as hikes and waterfalls that are all within an hour of Johnson City. Margarette Falls, Laurel Falls, Blue Hole, and Rocky Fork are some of my person favorites, though there are many others. There are some attractions in town as well, but Ashville has way more tourist attractions if that is your thing.

Virginia Creeper Trail, Laurel Falls (Hampton), and Devil's Bathtub (In VA) are all nice rides/hikes. Downtown Bristol and JC have decent bars.

Ridgewood is the bomb too. Need to eat Pal's as well.

Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock are all nice day trips from the Tri-Cities.

The traffic in the Tri-Cities will be worse than a Nascar event and all the hotel prices will be jacked up for a fifty mile radius.

Wytheville has some decent hotels. The Galax exit off of I77 also has some decent places. Not much in the way of attractions but you can go over to Fries and play in the New River

You might as well stay in Knoxville if you're going to drive down from Wytheville.

Another option is to stay at Natural Tunnel State Park's campground in Scott County, Va. Quite a few folks do that for the races and it's only about a half hour away.

Just a thought....Check into renting a cabin at the ROAN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK. Its about an hour from the Bristol Speedway and it would be a beautiful place to stay with hiking, sightseeing and also a nice camp ground with both tent and RV camp sites. There is also a pool, playground, and tennis courts. There might be short term rentals for less than a week. I grew up there and have rented cabins several times during the summer. You wont be sorry if you can get a cabin or even into the campground. It has a reputation as one of or maybe the nicest State Park in Tennessee.

Great state park, another is warriors path state park in colonial heights. It has a lake, golf course, riding stables, hiking, and Frisbee golf. There are three large lakes in the area; Watauga, south Holston, and Boone. They all have some type of camping on them and offer the usual lake recreational activities.

What's left of Boone.

We are staying in Kingsport most likely, maybe at the track with some friends in there motor home. I wouldn't stay to far outside the tri cities, because it will be a long trip into the game and very long trip back after the game. Abingdon is probably about as far north and south probably around exit 30 on I 81. There is a holiday inn on I 26 in Erwin now and that is as far east as I would want to stay.

Yeah I forgot about that, does anyone know the estimated time that the dam will be fixed? I actually have heard they may have to build a new dam.
May take up to 5-7 years to repair and costs are estimated around $200-300 million. I bet there is a lot of pissed lake property owners.

You know that's right. I grew up on that lake in 70's and early 80's. Parents moved because a town up river was dumping raw sewage into it. They ended up closing the lake for 2 years while it was cleaned up.

I just did 2 quick searches: 1st Marriott, courtyard in Bristol and Johnson City both have rooms at an unbelievable $475 a night. 2nd choice hotels has about 7 hotels around the area for $82 to $350 including the econo lodge beside the race track. There are still plenty of hotels, some are just real expensive.

There's not many motels north of Abingdon on I81 but if you can get one booked there in Abingdon it will be cheaper and only about 15 minutes away from BMS under normal driving conditions.

Also there's 2 motels in Glade Spring where I'm from at about 30 min away from BMS

Yeah Wytheville is about an hour and fifteen minutes from BMS. Marion is a little closer if you could find a cheaper rate there.

That Econolodge is 15-20 minutes from the track. Kinda deceiving online for them to put near speedway.
