Battle At Bristol WebCam

I was hoping they would do this!

As I've mentioned before, one of my co-workers drives the rescue squad that sits in turn 3 for the BMS races and he will also be working the game. He gave me an update this morning and thought I'd share with my VFL family.

* Your ticket will have to be displayed at all times while on BMS property, which will all be fenced in with various entrances.

* You HAVE to enter at the gate number indicated on your ticket.

* Once inside the track/field you cannot go out and re-enter.

* Prepare for all but a cavity search to get inside the facility.

* The same Trams that operate during the races will be operating for this event. (Thank GAWD! Those hills can be BRUTAL!)

* This may have already been posted, but the end zone between turns 1 and 2 will be our end zone and the one between 3 and 4 will have that 'other' teams logo.

GBO!!!

There will be some on here that were probably looking forward to the cavity search.

Thanks for the link! The webcam is a great idea.

That place is HUGE! They have the turf down now and from that angle the field looks pretty small. Forget the binoculars, telescope anyone?

Looks like they only have about two-thirds of it down so far. From about the near goal-line to the far 20-yard line or so. You can judge it by looking for the goalposts at each end (the far one is kinda difficult to make out with this camara's wide angle lens and kinda low resolution).

If you look closely around the track you can see the musco lighting the use for the night races. Im not sure if they are going to adjust them for the game or not. I read somewhere that they were bringing in additional lighting for the field in areas that were not lit enough.

Thanks. I did notice those but didn't think they would be close enough and/or bright enough to sufficiently light the field. I guess we'll see, but I agree that they will likely need to bring in some additional lighting.

It is impressive how they light the place for the night race. It provides more light that you might think. And typically they do not light the infield for the races since all of the action is on the track and the darkness does not interfere with the action on the track. I looked at the lighting while in the pits last week and noticed that the lighting up and down pit road could be turned inward. That lighting sits just outside the field of play so they may be planning on that covering the majority. I cant imagine they would want too may lighting trees in the way of peoples view from the stands.

To the right of Harvicks car is a little better shot of the Musco lighting that sits all around the track.

Those lights are very low to the ground for a football game. Lights in the eyes of QBs, receivers, punt returners, etc., can really affect a game.

I could actually see them leaving these lights completely off, and instead installing temporary light towers around the edge of the football surface to provide good top-down lighting.

Its actually a parabolic lighting system and doesnt effect the drivers doing 120 around Bristol in 15 seconds or the pit crews. The lighting also doesnt interfere with the fans in the stands. Its really interesting how it lights so effectively. None the less I know they have it figured out and Im sure will be sufficient in either case.

That grass is really starting to grow in well, now:

And looks like they're painting the base of the on-track bleachers black on the east side.

what is going to happen to the turf after the battle at bristol and the game the following week?
It seems like it would be a shame just to trash it, and i don't know that all of the tractor trailers can be driving on it for the races (perhaps they can I don't know).
Can it be donated to a local high school or similar?
seems a waste just for two games...even if it will be epic

Their gonna save it for a Super Bowl! :)

It may be too soon to comment and there are plans for correction, but; the yardage # markers sure look crooked and out of line to me.

looks like they are going to have to roll it back up and restart because the hash marks are all askew. JK :birgits_giggle:Can't wait. GBO

Well, that involves digging all that grass up and replanting all over again, so we'd better hope they can figure out a way to get the hash marks lined up short of that! This is turning out to be a complete disaster!

(go vols! :) )

I always thought that the field turf would be the easiest part of the build. The additional seating and the behind the scenes pats will probably not be finished until the day of the game.

Side note: I heard VT's equipment manager on the radio, and he stated that it will take the coaches in the box up to 10 minutes to get to the locker rooms. That is using golf carts and any shortcut available. I wonder if they may try video conference/skype?

The same thing was asked in reference to another team that's doing construction on their stadium right now. And the answer given was said Skype or conference couldn't totally be secure unless it was a CCTV type direct line. Plus they wanted the ability for said coordinators to be right there in case they drew the coach's ire during halftime.

Not the best answer, but makes sense.

Good answer. I wonder if they may extend halftime? Just getting down and back up to the press box would take the entire halftime.
