The Tony Basilio Show

Kudos to the bored fool that posted a fake tweet under a fake Tony Basilio Show account yesterday that was indistinguishable from my account stating that Butch Jones was leaving UT for Oregon. Look, if you're going to make sh** up in my name, at least tell a plausible lie. Butch Jones to Oregon is flat out silly. He has about as much chance of getting that job as I do.

Now for the interesting parts

Kudos to Butch Jones and Trace Armstrong. With a straight face they've asked for an extension AFTER THE VANDY GAME. We call that shameless where I come from.

Not only does Trace Armstrong want an extension for Butch Jones, but he wants a raise as well. He wants the failure money increased in the form of a $2 million addition on his buyout. Those are some mighty big stones those folks have. What world are they living in?

Is Jones really that delusional?

Here’s the bottom line. If you fire Butch, it’s going to cost $8 million dollars over 4 years minus anything he would net in his next stop. So, if you’re Tennessee, you’re talking about a two million dollar difference each year. When you think about it in these terms, how could Tennessee NOT MAKE THE MOVE? You’re almost forced to terminate this guy. Especially with him kicking up dust on the raise and the extension and the increased buyout. I’m sorry, but to Butch Jones I would say a huge "no thank you."

Final Thought: The difference between cutting bait with Butch Jones and keeping him is $2 million. Is all this worth $2 million? Put it this way...Would you be willing as a ticket buyer if we amortized next year's Southern Miss game. Instead of charging $30 for this game, we'll charge $60. This will raise an additional $3 million. Would this be worth it to get out from under this mess? I'm in.

He does make an interesting point, is 2 million a year (if Jones doesn't get another job) in additional expense really going to break the bank at UT?

People were in shock at what Bama was willing to pay Saban back in 07. Yes, it was/is a huge sum to pay for a coach but it has paid off many times over.

Now, how do you know it will work out if you break the bank? You don't, but to TB's point, $2MM per year sounds like a lot but you could raise ticket prices by $5 per game to cover it.

OTOH, I saw this post today, and it does put everything in perspective..

Some Big-Picture Thoughts on Tennessee, Butch Jones and the Future | Rocky Top Insider

From the article

Jones hasn’t solved every problem, and perhaps has been part of a few new ones, but Tennessee is in its most stable place in, arguably, the last decade or so. If you want to get a little creative with the math, you can point out that UT is 14-4 in its last 18 games. Perhaps a better stat is that only Florida (18) and Alabama (26) have won more overall games than UT over the past two season. Georgia is tied with Tennessee at 17. Tennessee has also hit eight wins for two consecutive seasons for the first time since 2006-07 and the Vols are headed to their third straight bowl game for the first time since 2002-04.

I'm getting sick of seeing this, he's 3-4 over the last 7 games with 2 of those losses coming to teams that had no business even keeping it close.

If you can't distinguish between fake twitter accounts, you may need to stay of Twitter.

I don't understand how people can't understand the difference between a strategic extension and one awarded for performance.

Money's not the reason to hang onto Butch. No need to raise ticket prices. The athletic dept brought it $70 mill last yr while profiting to the tune of 74% of that or $51.8 million:

While Tennessee may not have had the best season on the field in 2015, it had the best season of any school in the SEC when it comes to racking in money. The Volunteer program finished the 2015 season with total revenue of $70 million, $12 million more than the next LSU - the No. 3 most profitable program in the country.

These figures come via Forbes, which had Tennessee ranked as the seventh most profitable team in 2014.

“Revenue and expense data comes from annual financial reports made to the Department of Education; value to the local economy is measured by economic impact studies,”

"Our valuation methodology relies heavily on team earnings directed toward academics and other athletic programs. And while most SEC teams saw a sizable boost in revenue this year, none were as good as Tennessee at maximizing their bottom line and filling their athletic department’s coffers. The Volunteers had a profit margin of 74% of revenue last year, second only to Texas.

Tennessee the No. 2 most profitable football program in 2015 | FOX Sports

They made over $50mill last yr and we're talking about $2mill a yr? Honestly, Butch will most certainly get another job that pays around a mill a yr...even coordinators get that nowadays, so the money's peanuts

It doesnt include the cost of the new coach, assistance.

If we pay Jones 8 million to stay, or 10 million to leave plus 8 + over two years for new head coach (plus assistant cost) = 18+ million.

So it's a bit more than 2.

I do think it's funny if he did ask for a raise. Make sense for him to ask for more buy out sinse he knows he doesnt have a good chance of lasting here past next year.

Id like to know how we got to the point where two parties work out a multi year contract that has to be reworked every single year?

It doesn't make a damn bit of difference what type of extension he was trying for. The fact that they do it after he ****s the bed against Vandy is comical.

THe problem isnt $2mil per year. If that was all that was separating us from greatness I would gladly pay double in ticket prices next year. the problem is that a PROVEN coach that we could get for any amount of money UT admin was actually willing to pay doesnt exist right now. We saw what happened when we fired Fulmer without a good replacement plan. Hell, even those in the SEC who have hired great marque names (that dont rhyme with Satan) are only 1 or two games better than Butch with far better starting programs. Fact is that NO amount of money can guarantee a home run (10+ win every year inside of 2-3 years) hire in the SEC.

Butch's agent is just playing it smart. With no AD and the state of dissaray that is the SEC right now, he figures its a good idea to play hardball as much as he can. TN cannot afford to let him go - right now at least. Its good negotiating.

If CBJ isnt doing it by mid season next year (tho he was 5-0 this year and see how that worked out) I am guessing the new AD can make plans well in time to have a good transition to a home run hire if CBJ cant demonstrate progress.

3-4 over the last 7 games is trending down. Will Jones step up and fix it, starting with himself?

Or, will Jones supreme arrogance be his downfall? The guy has just asked for more money from UT after the worst two losses (USCjr & Candy) probably in the last 10 years, R U KIDDING ME!!!

Sugar bowl payout==>$18 million
Avg bowl payout for bowls now considering UT==>$2 million

If Butch truly went and asked for this, he should have been laughed out of the office with a pink slip...

Could you imagine missing your expectations at work then telling your boss "Hey, it's ok" with a straight face. Then saying to your coworkers "How could anyone say that I'm not doing a good job?" Then coming back a few days later and asking for a RAISE?

I would get fired on the spot.

Why does anyone listen to Basilio? The only way he is able to stay relevant is promoting unfounded rumors. He's shown himself to be completely FOS.

It is called spinning it.

And I have no problem with the ask for raise and extension - we all do and expect that every year at our jobs. I don't know why we get all up in arms when other folks do that.

Isn't it an agents job to get the most money for his client? Sounds like a petty argument

Yeah, I get the spinning it. Just not sure why so many people are dumb enough to think it's true.
