Basilio saying CBJ’s people working on buyout

Butch Jones could've afforded to have a season like this in year 5 if he had earned some credit with the fan base while he had a talented enough team to do it. He missed some big opportunities in 2015 when they blew two score 4th quarter leads to Oklahoma and Florida. Win those and also win South Carolina and Vanderbilt last year and get to Atlanta and his job is secure right now even given how bad they have looked this season. He was close to making it here but never did.

That 2015 team should have been in the playoffs.

I hope that we don't get Brady Hoke for interm Coach. If they do I done with them the remainder of this season. I'm not watching or going to a game. I will wait on the hiring of our New Coach.

So: would you rather they keep Butch the rest of the year?!

His agent and attorney are supposedly meeting with Currie on the financials and Butch will resign after the Bama or Kentucky game when it’s all ironed out.

So, Butch is going to be a pay "back", not a pay out, correct???

If Butch wants to stick around in Power-5 coaching then he will resign. I think Jones will be back in power-5 coaching and I could see some schools having interest in him. I don't think it will be somewhere that expects to contend for championships on a yearly basis. However I could see him getting somewhere that has a "You win some and you lose some. Just get us to a bowl and we are happy" mentality. That is what has happened with Muschamp and as a result I think he is South Carolina coach as long as he wants to be.

Call me obtuse, but I don't understand negotiating the buyout. I thought the contract language was pretty cut and dry.

Maybe its just negotiating the timing of the announcement and cash flow... but the amount is set, right?

it's often this way, but not always. Gary Anderson just left Oregon St. and did not take the buy out. A coach can decide he's just in the wrong place and resign rather than stick around and be fired. It's not all about the money - and this post says as much. This could have been Currie's strategy all along- allow Butch to feel the heat without protecting him. who knows about all that. But... sometimes it's best for all concerned including the coach to take less than the buyout and either leave your own terms or cut short a terrible situation.

Butch may be willing to take less or over a long period of time! who knows?

Would not surprise me if Butch waived buyout or a portion. He is a honest person and has tried very hard to be the care taker of Tennessee football. I think he feels and believes the things he says. It just has not worked out.

Why? There isn’t going to be a “good” interim coach option.

You honestly don’t believe that do you?

I'm not really buying that. Same way we fans see Butch as a liability, so will other potential employers. Doesn't matter if he takes a little less to walk now or goes 5-7 and gets the full buyout. He's still clearly damaged goods.

Completely disagree with this. If Butch gives the University an "out," it will enhance his marketability as a coach. If UT handles his dismissal with class and Butch leaves here with his head held high & with dignity... AND praised for the good he has certainly accomplished... UT will be much more attractive to potential big hires.

Butch Jones is a good man. A quality human being who did his best. The expectations around here are higher than his best could provide, AT THIS POINT IN HIS COACHING CAREER.

If Basilio is accurate in his reporting, then Butch Jones is doing what good men do. If the AD and trustees are quality people, as well, then Butch is giving them an opportunity to show it to potential coaching hires.

I hope what Basilio is reporting is accurate. If so, this is good for all concerned.

We, as fans, should stop showing our backside and let these good people work it out. If true, the report indicates that we are getting what we want... and in the most "decent" manner possible, given the circumstances.

Well, per Butch's shift/ re-focus towards champions of life, it's actually fair to believe/ remain confident that in his eyes/ per his plan, things (for the players) did work/ have worked out.

The thing is: now he will have to take/ emphasize this new champions of life plan/ achievement of these 5 years to the next school (and hopefully there, they will achieve both CoL + championships on the field, assuming that's what he achieved in Cinc and up in Mich like I think he came here as emphasizing).

Currie will let Butch flounder and continue to lose and look bad. Butch knows the worse that this season goes the less of a chance that he will land a good job after his is fired. Currie will negotiate a cheaper buyout to let Butch go sooner with his dignity while also saving the program money.

Butch wants out, why not try to get that buyout a little cheaper and then both parties are happy. Tennessee saves money and Butch goes with his dignity. Butch isn't Currie's guy so he's playing hardball with him.

Well, I guess we'll just call it "complimentary negotiation"

He has an agent, and he's the most powerful man in the business. His agent could very easily determine UT's next coach.
