When Butch said that UT was his dream job, that was 100% truth. As in "never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to land a job where I could bilk a major power 5 football program that was majorly vulnerable out of millions of dollars." It's easy to see now that he has built a career off of taking advantage of "situations" at all the schools he has coached at. Butch is an extremely smart guy. Just not at coaching football. He knew he could take us for a ride because UT was so beat down by Dooley. He played us like a stradivarius.
In his defense the UT administration is completely complicit in all this. They were the ones who were conned and gave him the money no doubt. Doesn't change the spirit of the situation.
Poor vulnerable program who was turned down by many other coaches. He had all the leverage in the negotiations. All he had to do was play it cool and say all the right things and he was on his way to a lifetime of opulence. Many CEOs do this same thing every day.
No one expects him to walk away from a buyout. But at this point his "business" of being Butch Jones is going under, he needs to bale water quickly to save his brand.
This tenuous moment gives Currie leverage he can wield to whittle down the buyout to a more palatable size.
It would be mutually beneficial at this point.
The only bad move was not firing his sorry ass last year but nobody wanted Dave Hart making another hire. Here we go with Dooley-Kiffin part II. I feel really bad for the players, coaches, alumni, and people who really care about the university. If any of this is true, I hope Butch and his family find a real home, a long successful career, and the fickle media is writing stories about how dumb a move Tennessee made.
I wouldn't be too sure he's gonna do it. He's likely gonna keep trying to win ball games to the best of his ability because he's getting paid well to do it. I think the players still have his back too and they honestly like their coach. This doesn't have to be ugly.
I sincerely doubt Butch resigns. Obviously basilio is full of crap, but no way Butch walks away from the $. If Im wrong, Ill gladly admit it.
If you quit before your contract expires, you owe the university. If university fires coach, university owes coach full buyout. In this case if he wants to resign, I'm sure the university would be happy to let him, negotiate a smaller buyout (hopefully), and part ways ASAP. Beat case scenario for all involved if true.Call me obtuse, but I don't understand negotiating the buyout. I thought the contract language was pretty cut and dry.
Maybe its just negotiating the timing of the announcement and cash flow... but the amount is set, right?

I legitimately will never understand all the hate for Basilio on this board. Easily the most honest and entertaining sports radio guy in this, and many other markets, by miles.
He doesn't get it all at once and if he sits on his butt for awhile, UTK could always suspend payment and claim he's willfully unemployed/underemployed in which case he'd have to file suit for breach and prove that he can't get a coaching job.
I'm not buying that... The buyout he'd receive from Tennessee is more money that he'd make in 4 years at his next job. It'd only take 1 year of coaching at a mid-major to repair whatever damage is being done to his brand.

I don't see who would hire him. Purdue showed zero interest after his best season.
What kind of beating has his brand taken since then.
Finebaum just said he is an abject failure as a head coach. Make no mistake a complete failure. Sports media has lynched the man far worse than dooley.
A complete lynching. NO ONE WANTS BUTCH JONES AS A HEAD COACH. NO MID MAJOR, NO ONE.
You cant sell this man as a good hire. Sorry about that.

You actually know there is a clause in there that he has to actively look for another job? The reduction in buyout if he moves to another job is one that partially protects the university against a Kiffin event.
I would assume that a buyout was simply a consolation for and insurance against not being retained for the duration of an agreed contract.
Does he really need his family to tell him the environment is toxic? I mean he boiled the stew, not sure why he needs to be told it has a smell.
