Basilio radio show calling for DC Shoop Firing.

No, it wasn't and that one play by Martin (What was he doing? We must have a better option at CB) had a lot to do with that. That extended the drive by another 3:30 and led to a TD.

No idea if the young guns at corner are as capable as Martin is right now, but I'd sure as hell find out this week. I'd start one at corner or at least play him early and give him the lions share of minutes. Same at LB, DT. If they are physically and mentally prepared, play 'em this week. So tired of never trusting youth and never having enough depth....ever. Depth doesn't just happen...you gotta build it.

I remember thinking we'd never have a DC give up more yards than Sal Sunseri. My son texted me that we've given up 2500 yards in last 4 reg season games. Tech, Vandy, Kentucky and Missouri.

Weird that Sunseri gave up less yards and lost, but we are 4-1 in Shoops games. It'll be interesting to see if the trend continues.

Basilio is also calling for TN to buy players. He's just being an ass-clown to get attention.

BTW, calling the radio station to fire him won't work because he buys the airtime. But calling his advertisers and not trading with them would ruin his operation. I'm not suggesting that though. He's just an entertainer stirring **** up.

Why is that? Shoop didn't get to bring any of his people with him.

What difference does it make? You can either organize, teach and coordinate a defense....and get your players and coaches on the same page....or you can't. And at Tennessee, thus far, Shoop can't.

I listed to the show and the discussion was about firing a coach during the season if they are terribly underperforming.

They weren't calling for the firing only saying that a head coach should not feel obligated to wait until season end. The example was Majors firing Donahue mid season in 88 and then winning out, and going 11-1 the following year.

Anyone who isn't concerned after that performance has their head in the sand.

Y'all should be thankful there is a radio show that isn't worried about whether UT coaches will grant an interview, but will speak candidly and without fear of reprisal.

Here's a perfect example of one of the dozen or so callers to the Basilio show. Rousty, I have heard your calls and read your posts for years. Which ride do you work on at Dollywood?:)

Or might it be possible that the players he has to work with simply aren't as good as advertised, motivated enough or smart enough? There are certainly some talented folks on this roster, but there are several who simply have not lived up to their lofty star ratings. So is it all on Shoop or do we have limitations/mistakes on the roster?

Defense is regressing. He makes over a million per yr. Monday night was an embarrassment. I never thought I would see someone worse than Sunseri...

Sure we sometimes make a fuss over little things on here and all that.

However, there is simply no argument that can be made that suggest that shoop has been even remotely close to mediocre since his arrival.

What does Derek Mason make at Vandy?

I'd guess $2.5 to $3mm. Maybe a bit more, they don't publish since Vandy is a private school. I remember it being reported that Vandy put $4.4mm on the table 4 years ago to try and keep Franklin there.

I agree with him.

I think we have enough body of work to figure out he ain't cutting it. In the last five games, opposing team averaged almost 600 yards/game. Not Bama, UGA, Oregon, Clemson...rather...Mizzou, Vandy, etc. Unacceptable.

Yes because the inability to coach the 3rd string D up to 1st string SEC players last year was a crappy body of work. SMH

One game and the professionals can make decisions.

We have damn good athletes all over the field, that is beyond evident imo. Vandy never had anywhere near the talent on their teams then the Shoop has now....ditto at Penn State coming off scholarship reductions up there.

I don't know what the disconnect is with Shoop, but it's real and it's palpable.

All off season when the topic of stopping GT's offense came up, everyone said "you've gotta be disciplined and play assignment football....everybody has to do his job". Well what happened?

It wasn't a lack of athletes, it was a lack of execution, a lack of players playing disciplined, assignment football and that's all about coaching and schematics, both which fall squarely on the Defensive Coordinator......especially given the horror that was our defense in 2016 under Shoop. The GaTech wasn't an anomaly or one-off, it was the continuation of a very bad trend under Shoop.

We had a new QB and OC in the first game playing an unconventional offense in a road game in an unfamiliar stadium.
All of you tools that want to fire everyone amaze me. Give it a few games and see what they do.

Highly underrated post right here.

IMO I think it was changing to the 4-3 just for the GT game. I want to see us back with the 4-2-5 playing traditional offenses before I get to judgemental.

Obviously the pay raise. Can't blame him for that as Penn State wasn't willing to match. At the same time, I won't feel sorry for him if he gets the ax as getting paid 6 figures for coaching a sport is a gift in itself.

However in his first year, he had to teach coaches and players, along with dealing with injuries. Its not like he has completely crapped the bed. Also, Butch saw enough him to want to pay him lots of money to come here.

I wasn't aware that it was that big of a pay raise.

So in your scenario it went down like this:

Butch: Shoop come and be the DC at UT.

Shoop: How much does it pay?

Butch: More than you're making now

Shoop: OK.

I promise it didn't happen that way. The staff was considered.

If what you say is true then Butch and Butch only set up UT for failure by not allowing Shoop to bring in his staff.

who knew that we would hire the most uncool football coach in the game? Maybe ever.

Doesn't mean he isn't a good person and doesn't mean he won't win a legitimate championship. He just isn't a trend setter in any way lol

I understand that the triple option is difficult to match up against, but guys this staff had a year to prepare and gave up 600 yards. The least Jones could have done is slow down our offensive approach and give your defense some more minutes to catch their breathe, again showing Jones true lack of discipline as a HC. He makes more time management mistakes than any coach I can remember, but somehow finds ways to win ball games, just barley.

Yes, and his time management at the end of the 1st half when he failed to use his 2 available timeouts on our hurry up drive, letting 15 seconds run off the clock after one play, was inexcusably bad.

Ken Donahue was fired by John Majors during 1988 season & replaced by Doug Mathews. Donahue' s body of work much better than that of Shoop, so what's the big deal?
