Based on both games last night. If you were Pitt, how would you game plan for us?

With great respect,....
Regarding Defensive Line ... this is the first time I have seen DL knocking down passes. You have have insight that I do not, but I cannot image we showed Pitt what they can expect to see in week 2.
But you are spot on with ... the key to defense is ability to get sacks with the guys up front.
I am not sure that 0 sacks against Ball State is that significant, for one thing...QB was getting rid of the ball really quick.
Slovis is not the quality they had at QB last year.
I did not see anybody on the Pitt WR group who looked anything like Jordan Addison.
Agree that the game will be similar to last year, differences will be in the polish and shine.
I agree this is not a guaranteed win.
But I will go out on a limb and suggest that we are 10 points better than last year.... and they look to be ...10 points worse...
So, l am thinking it might be a 45-31 TN win.

I hope you're right... I just didn't see a lot of drop off on the Pitt I saw last year, production. You don't necessarily have to have a first round QB and Biletnikoff winner to throw up similar stats.

Based on what I saw, our defense is no better than last year. Now they have 11 more games to prove me wrong.. :)

A little harsh assessment of hooker if ya ask me. He deserves to play with a chip on his shoulder and be confident. He’s earned that. The kids are just excited, I didn’t see anything that was to much celebration.
I can see what you’re saying tho how that can be a distraction but we’re not the Tennessee baseball team by no means. They’ll get hit in the mouth and straighten out.

I hope you’re right! I guess the BaseVols just rubbed me the wrong way. The cockiness and hype was fun and games until ND punched em in the teeth. I just don’t want to see it happen to the football team.

I know what you’re saying, I think football is a lot different tho, you can’t go around acting like you da man without someone knocking ya out.. While I don’t mind hooker celebrating, and playing confident theirs definitely a line and he is the role model for them 18 year olds so you’re not wrong.
I think he’ll be fine tho, hooker seems like a good dude , he’s probably just pumped the season is finally here.

On the football field, I tend to trust your eyes better than mine!!!! My glasses are tinted with an optimistic filter than often clouds my vision. :)
My brothers, both former football players, after watching both games ... are opining that the game is ours to lose, but they are also calling it a shootout win with the turnovers deciding the winner.

I'm dense at times but that seems in conflict? I guess they are saying, IF we don't turnover more than Pitt then we win but if do we lose? Since it is ours to lose its the only way the last part makes sense.

IMO, a shootout is always unpredictable as to a winner. It likely does boil down to who got the last break, like PItt last night taking a missed, tipped pass to the house for the winner.

Obviously Narduzzi isn’t a dumb enough coach to game plan for us based on last night’s hefty serving of vanilla flavored ice cream with vanilla drizzle on top, but he has plenty of film on us, and now he has game film on his 2022 squad. What’s he thinking right now?

On defense: Pitt’s defense just gave up 190 yards rushing to WVU. And that’s including JT Daniels -23 yards for being a statue. Now they have Small/Wright, and an additional threat with Hooker to run on them. I’m sure they would LOVE to sell out to stop the run, but I think we all know how that would turn out. The only thing that would accomplish would be vastly improving the draft stock of Tillman/Hyatt/Hooker.

My guess: If I’m Pitt, I’m thinking we’re screwed on defense. Maybe bring the house all day long? Hope you can force us into quick-outs and short passes? That seems like the only feasible plan.

On offense: Tennessee’s secondary still has yet to prove it’s worth. They are still susceptible to the deep ball, and receivers can get wide open in space for big gains. Pitt also has Slovis now who showed he can air it out with 308 yards last night. With only 76 rushing yards against WVU, I can’t count on the run game.

My guess: Run a similar game plan as Ball State. Max protect, extra TE’s. Try to sit back and pick our secondary apart. If I’m Pitt I run just enough to keep us honest, hope we can score more than the other guys on big explosive plays.

Anybody see anything different?
JT made a lot of throws on the run last night. Our run game was shameful last night imo.

Pitt is very experienced on both lines. If I were them I would pound the rock and play keep away.

The Pitt D-line is legit. Pitt was hit in the mouth and responded - that should help them.

I like our chances but they are a seasoned, talented team
Run it down TN. We can’t stop them. Not staffs fault. Pruitt recruited poorly on D.

Sure, but the thread discussion is based around “if you were Pitt, how would you game plan tn”. And the answer is 100% to target Burrell.
I think we will have Burrell do press coverage with safety help over the top to protect him.

It appears Pitt was all out rushing the passer and it showed with the pressure on Daniels and the lanes they left open in the run game. Don’t let that rushing total influence your opinion of their DL. Plus, the important thing is to win the critical downs 3rd and 4th & short. Pitt DL can.

Pitt will do what they’re best at. I suspect they’ll run & play action pass. And come after Hooker. Just like they did last night. They could run the table after this.

I dam sure see this being a nail biter I don’t care what anyone says. We will get up, Pitt will claw and scratch, similar to last year. Being away doesn’t make me feel well about the final result, especially the lack of trust I have in our defense and one particular corner and sub par d line play.

One positive on defense: #5 showed flashes of EB #14 at that age.

Negative on offense: hate it all you want but we do NOT have a viable option at running back. They gonna have to split the load and that sucks we don’t have dominance at that position. Hooker’s feet will help but we are going to have to draw some sh** up and get creative to have effective rushing against decent defenses ie squirrel white.

Another positive, a loss against Pitt doesn’t hurt our conference record so in the grand scheme of 2022, not really important win or lose unless you bank on going to the playoffs this year or a 10 win season is important to you.

Pitt is coming off a rivalry game that was put on pause for a decade. They were amped and a lot of energy revolved around this game for them. The downside is they have to completely erase what happened last night and refocus for better team this week that isn’t going to give their defense time to catch their breath. We are coming into town looking to do to them what they did to us last year. Pitt will have a little time to gather themselves and prepare for this game but you can’t overstate how tough it is for teams to refocus after games like that.

WVU is not even close to a good team and they smacked Pitt around everywhere but the scoreboard. I worry about our defense but they're not going to be able to slow down the offense at all.

If I was Pitt id run the ball down our throat for 4 quarters and exploit our depth/talent issues. On defense they'll probably take the running game away which shouldn't be hard to do with our Oline/running back talent. They have us beat on both lines and we have them beat at Qb and coaching. It'll be a dog fight and hopefully we can outscore them. They have a bad secondary like us and skill wise were pretty similar. Should be a great matchup to see what we really have.

Pitt D line is legit. Need Hooker to step up. Tillman, Hyatt & Bru need100 yd games. Small & back ups need 160 yds. Dylan should be good for 60. This is a make or break for TN. Lose this one & we’re looking at another 7-5 season.

Simple on offense get the ball out quick with slants, outs, screens, and draws. Defense send the house

Defend the wide receiver screen. Those plays always take too long to develop because you are throwing horizontally. Pitts defense is good enough and experienced enough to defend those and maybe jump some routes. That's gotta change quickly
Need a strong armed qb for those parallel throws. The ball needs to be thrown on time, and like a dart. Hooker tended to float his passes like that on Thursday.

No. They are good. Pitt is talented on both lines. Watching a lot of the replay of their game last night, they are fundamentally sound, big with good depth.

I would not sleep on them at all.
They are big and good. I think tempo is to our benefit.
