Why? It was 24 years ago. I don't think any current UK staff member or player is personally affected by what happened then. I'd also point out that UK's basketball coach had special bourbon bottles made with his name on them, and UK was a part of advertising for that, so I don't think they are very sensitive about the alcohol (or the 98 accident) issue. I was on campus in 98 and at that game, which was 6 days after the players' accident, and UT handled it in a first-class manner. There is no reason for a novelty trophy that was part of a long tradition, to continue to be banished.

Does this seem like an athletic department that is sensitive about alcohol?

That's not what this is. It may surprise you to know that most border rivalries have trophies that the winner will possess until they lose that rivalry game. It's honoring a rich tradition and rivalry.
