Barnett vs Garrett

This week my money says only no Sutton

It would be a big surprise to me if we see JRM this week. If we see him at all again this season I am afraid it won't be until after the bye week. But I'm really concerned we may not see him again until the bowl game. I suspect his shoulder is in pretty bad shape. I hope very much you are right and I am wrong, but my guess is we may get DKJR back, but not JRM (or Cam obviously). But I haven't heard anything on Kirkland's status at this point.

Barnett in the second half this year is as good as we've ever seen a DE perform. If he could come out on fire from the opening kickoff, he'd be even more impressive.

Perhaps hearing folks raving about Garrett will have Barnett looking to make a statement from the get go? As he goes, so goes the defense.

I think Kirkland and Maybin both find a way to get on the field Saturday

I see this as more of a JJ Watt vs. Jadeveon Clowney comparison. With Watt you had a guy with great burst, a high motor and decent intangibles who was a consistent high level performer ala. Derek Barnett. Jadeveon Clowney was the freak athlete with off the chart intangibles who by stats was always performing at a high level ala Myles Garrett. Whats crazy about this comparison as well is that I could easily see the two being drafted in/around the exact same spots: JJ Watt (11th overall 2011) Jadeveon Clowney (1st overall 2014). Past this I have always been a firm believer that a high motor, high work ethic kind of guy will have the higher chance of success in the NFL vs. the high intangible guys and we see this being the case between Watt and Clowney. With this I believe even with not being as hyped as Garrett I firmly believe he has the mold to be the more successful NFL player.

Haven't watched enough Tenn this year to comment on Barnett, but Garrett is double or triple teamed on almost every play. That's why he hasn't put up the "stats". Pro Football Focus accounts for double teams and disruptions, etc. and they have Myles as the highest graded DE in the country. But just because that's the case doesn't discount that Barnett is great too.

Barnett must trash talk the hell out of officials, because I can't remember a defensive lineman get held so constantly without getting the call since jesse mahelona

On that defensive touchdown against Georgia they tried to double team Barnett. Didn't work out for them.

I'm just going to try to be the voice of reason here:

I do think Barnett is better and I've said that for a couple of years now. How much better you might ask? Not much. You've got to realize the similarities between the two in that they both face similar blocking schemes. Barnett just benefits from having better guys along the line with him; Garrett gets double (even triple) teamed on a looooooot of his rushes, and has since he came into the league. Barnett has been fortunate enough to have some guys next to him that require a lot of attention, opening up a lot of opportunities for him.

Garrett vs. our O-Line scares me, and I'm hoping we keep it away from his side of the field.

I've literally been saying this since the OU game last year. Barnett gets held on a STRONG majority of plays whether it be an arm around the neck or someone simply getting a handful of his jersey. It's the only way to defend him because he's so dayum fast at getting around that corner.

Garrett is going to play. A&M made the decision to sit him vs USC as USC has a putrid offense.

He is hurt, but played through it during the second half of the Arky game and practiced all last week. Daeshon Hall (his counterpart on the RHS and roommate) mentioned in the USC post-game that he was surprised as anyone when he didn't make the trip.

Don't know much about Barnett, but those are some crazy stats.

Who will be out for y'all this week?

Texas A&M': had been labeled by many one of the best in the NCAA. They have players all on that line.

Looks like Sutton and Reeves-Maybin...I'm hopeful that Kirkland plays

I am very worried about Garrett putting up a 1999 Alex Brown type game, where he keeps running around our offensive tackle, and the coaching staff never makes an adjustment to double him.

I think this whole argument is pointless. They aren't really the same type of players IMO.

A&M does a better job of getting after the QB I think and it's not just Garrett.

Garrett is a quality individual as well. Barnett is better against the run, Garrett better at rushing the QB.

Garrett plays in the West, Barnett plays in the East. East is much easier (Vandy, KY, SC, Mizzou LOL).

Noted, but we have yet to play any of those schools this year. Comparing schedules to date, and individual stats to date, it's hard for you to play the east vs. west card right now.
