Barnett vs Garret, not as close as you might think

I normally lurk, but this was a great read. Good job OP. I personally think Barnett has a better pro career. He can be effective in multiple schemes.

This is how I view him too, and from what I've seen of similar college/pro players at the positions. Garret is a more consistent Clowney (without the insane single year Clowney had) and I expect him to be the same in the NFL, very feast or famine type player. His potential is higher than Barnett's, but he needs the right team and system and to not get injured for it to happen.

Barnett is more akin to Reggie White or Dwight Freeney. Able to play in multiple positions and athletic enough to do them all pretty well. Though neither Garret nor Barnett have the sheer size + speed that either of those guys had, both are quicker than the two, but Barnett more so laterally from what I've seen.

We forget, Barnett and Garret are virtually the same weight, but Garret is two inches taller. If Barnett was even an inch taller, then the two wouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence most likely. But pro scouts in all sports love potential and "prototypical measurables" over sure fire things more often these days, mostly because they HAVE to find that next freak player.

Garret= self absorbed premadonna , who takes plays off and has a so, so motor.
Barnett= hard working, humble play maker in the clutch with the best defensive line motor in the SEC.
run right at garret, he will wither . Barnett will not

The true test of how it will all go down on Saturday is based on the comparison of left tackle since both Garrett and Barnett are monsters. I'd be willing to bet their LT is a lot better than ours so we better have a plan to help out on both Garrett and Hall with a back or TE.

Hall is pretty dominant as well and probably ranks as the 4-5 best DE in the conference.

Have you watched any A&M football this past year or two. I live in Texas and get to see quite a bit. Garrett is one of the most talented kids at his position I've ever seen and also one of the most humble stars I've ever seen. It's literally hard to pull against he guy. I certainly don't want him to have success this week but his is very humble and his motor doesn't quit like you said.

Looks good but one thing of note about the sacks comparison against SEC opponents, the SEC West has had better quality teams than the east for several years.

I would take Barnett over any DE in the nation. The guy has heart, you can see it in his stats. That Garrett guy is all show

If you want to say Barnett is better feel free, but to say Myles is all show shows you haven't even watched one snap. The guy is the first one in the weight room, last one to leave and his motor never turns off on the field. He never takes a play off. That is just a ridiculous statement and lack of knowledge

You just lost all credibility here. You won't see him EVER take a play off, so it's evident you are speaking homer language and not intelligent football language.

Nothing to be ashamed of to argue Barnett is better, but watch some football man.

If holding were objectively called in this conference, Barnett would have half again as many sacks and TFLs.

There have been Aggie posters who have made videos of how many times Myles Garrett gets held. It's almost every play. He is too fast and OTs are forced to hold. Barnett is no different. Trust me the sack numbers would be way up for Myles as well.

Is that saying that Myles Garrett has only played 8 games against ranked teams since he started college?

...but as has been mentioned, that is nullified by the fact that Tennessee plays Alabama every year and played a good Arkansas team last year. It has been a while since we got to play the worst team from the west (whoever that may be).

Also played Ole Miss and that team beat Alabama.

Wow.

Garrett will still go higher in the draft. But, maybe you could get a job at Stats, Inc. & help change that! You should. This is a pretty awesome analysis. Probably took a lot of research &/or tracking!

AP top 25 teams by the end of season (or when played counting this year), yes. That's the only metric that most websites consistently agree upon and use once the season has ended. In fact, here are the exact numbers.

2014: 4
2015: 3
2016: 1

Gotcha. I'd be more interested in using rankings based on the time at which those teams played. Say a team was ranked and playing really well, then they got decimated by the A&M D-Line, then fell off the face of the earth. I'd count that as a ranked team.

For the current season it does that, but for end of seasons it doesn't, it's a bit strange. And the AP poll is very different than most think. For example, the AP had Virginia Tech ranked 25 when we played them but not UGA.

In the end it all evens out, but if a team starts the season top 15 and ends unranked (hello Notre Dame) then it doesn't count, and especially in the first 4-5 weeks of the season I think that's a fair metric to use.

I'm actually posting a new thread about our common AP opponents the last two seasons. The info is... quite telling in fact.

Comparing what Garrett and Barnett have done in the SEC is comparing apples to oranges. Garrett plays in the SEC west and goes against LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss and Arkansas which have been known to have the top OL in football each year for the past several years. Barnett lines up against Missouri, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and South Carolina each year. Florida and Georgia have good to great offensive lines, but they would be at the bottom of the SEC west in terms of OL. Both are great. If you want to tell me that Barnett is a little better or Garrett is a little better I wouldn't argue either way, but be fair about the comparison and the competition.

Honestly I think you guys will come away more impressed with our 3 safeties Evans, Watts and Wilson. Those guys fly to the football and look to take your head off each time. I look forward to Dobbs and Hurd going against them. Both are physical players so it should be a great scene.

Barnett also plays bama every year, and has played Ark and Ole Miss. Garrett has played South Carolina every year (except last week) and has played Mizz and Vandy I believe....not as huge of a difference as you led some to believe.
