Congrats to Derek.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee

Junior defensive end Derek Barnett recorded three tackles, one sack, two tackles for a loss, one forced fumble and one interception against No. 1 Alabama on Saturday.
On Alabama's second drive of the second quarter, Barnett sacked Jalen Hurts for a 14-yard loss and forced a fumble that was recovered by UT's Quay Picou at the Crimson Tide's 11-yard line. That turnover resulted in points as it set up a seven-yard touchdown run by Alvin Kamara to pull the Vols to within 14-7. The sack was the 26th of Barnett's career, giving him sole possession of third-most in Tennessee history. He is now six sacks away from tying Reggie White (32) for the UT all-time record and three away from matching Leonard Little's 28 in second place.
With 26.0 career sacks, Barnett ranks second among active FBS players.
Barnett halted Alabama's fourth possession of the second quarter when he intercepted a pass by Hurts and returned it seven yards to the UT 32-yard line. Teammate Shy Tuttle batted the ball high up in the air and Barnett caught the ball with Hurts draped over him for the first interception of his career.

Amazing considering.
Bama is hardly ever called for a hold. That's not hyperbole, here is a snip from VolGee 4 in another thread.

From 2007-2015:

9 years
121 games
8114 offensive snaps

55 holding penalties

OL is flagged for holding every 219 snaps.

Alabama had zero holding penalties during 65% of their games.

Only 2 times during 121 games was Alabama flagged for holding while trailing on the scoreboard.

Interesting Breakdown:

9 games vs. Auburn ................. 2 holding penalties against OL.
6 games vs. Florida .................. 1
4 games vs. Georgia ................ 0
10 games vs. LSU .................... 3
9 games vs. Tennessee ............ 1
9 games vs. Ole Miss ............... 2

9 games vs. Arkansas .............. 6

Yes, Bama is disciplined, but NO ONE is that disciplined.
Makes what DB did even more impressive.

Amazing that he won despite the fact we gave up 49 points. About as rare as a super bowl MVP from the losing team?

I think with 86 assistants or whatever they've got someone's reviewing what types of holds the refs call and they've taught their players some technique to not get called. I don't think I've ever seen a team hold so much and never get called.

I will . I really doubt we will find another kid like Barnett

Statistically? We won't.

He's about to do in 3 years what Reggie and Pollack did in 4.

Hell Through two years there has NEVER been a DE as good as Barnett in almost any metric. And the one thing he wasn't great at, turnovers, he has improved on insanely this year. He has caused more turnovers this season then his last two combined.

On that same thread, someone posted video from Saturday's game. Showed one of our players getting grabbed and thrown to the ground right in front of the line judge and no flag thrown.
And I mean insanely obvious.
I agree with what you said, but there's a little more than technique involved in many of the situations.

It's a rigged system. :)

I honestly believe there is truth to that, and not just for the SEC.
Whoever was doing updates in the Clemson thread said NC State had like 14 penalties and Clemson 0.

Conferences have a huge amount of money on the line and plenty of reasons to get their best teams into potential playoff positions. .
