Barnes must have spring break plans

You may not want to hear this, but Tennessee has overachieved this season.

Some of y'all act like the program wasn't a total and complete dumpster fire 5 minutes ago.

Run off a coach that took you to the Sweet 16 and hire a guy who gets a show cause penalty within a year and some of y'all act surprised that it's going to take more than 2 years.

Personally, and I never thought much of Barnes, this season has been a damn miracle for Tennessee

Barnes is building something great here. Predicted to finish dead last....but has this young squad showing flashes of really solid strong basketball within the next 3 seasons with these players. They have hanged with Oregon, UNC, beat Kentucky....to be as inexperienced as they are there is a lot of promise for the next few years to come.

The teams gas tank is running empty though now after playing some great ball for most of the season with what they got. So now the Barnes haters are like sharks smelling blood in the water. But he is the most experienced basketball HC we've had at Tennessee in years with the record to prove it. I wonder if Bruce was back here if the PRO-Pearls hating Rick Barnes would be bashing him the same way if he was here with the same results.

Well said. UT is now an NIT(if lucky) and music city bowl program. I see nothing from leadership to lead me to believe this will change any time soon.

Hard to see it from "leadership" when the new Chancellor has been on the job for 2 weeks and don't have a new AD yet.

I believe a good coach who is totally dialed into the program would have this team at least playing more consistent game to game by now. He hasn't. He should also be recruiting at a higher level at this point. He isn't. Come to your own conclusion with this. I think he is coasting to retirement and wasn't expecting these kids to do as much as they've done this season and wasn't prepared for it. JMO

This is such a lazy response. The same rhetoric just posted over and over. Coasting to retirement? Really? Think about that. Does he really need to be working? He's 60-something years old, a millionaire, yet he's working to make ends meet until "retirement". If he had no passion for the job, he'd just retire and go spend time with the grandkids.

This kind of ignorant response is what makes fanbases look so incredibly stupid.

I bet Texas fans would gladly take Barnes back, since they ended up with Anthony Grant 2.0 who is 10-18 in his 2nd year there.

Barnes is a hell of a coach and is building something special here. He took over the a dumpster fire.

Our best player is a freshman and we have a lot of other talented freshman/sophomores. We overachieved this year. No excuses for not making the tourney next year.

Nope. We suck. End of times. Barnes is coasting to retirement...haven't you heard? He can't recruit. Our team is lazy. We can't shoot. Woe is me. Agony and despair!

Yall bit** wayyyyyy to much..... Good God, we were picked 13th in the SEC preseason. We weren't even supposed to be here!?! So the next time you decide to whine over spilled milk, appreciate the fact we have a coach like CRB and are winning ball games and getting better. Dear God, have you ever had an off night? Last night was one for the vols.

I know some folks are negative by nature and are always laying in wait for anything that supports their negative outlook on things. The whole Ricky Bobby if you ain't first you're last mentality has to be an exhausting way to live your life.

My take on the program is CRB has proven he develops players and isn't the type coach where the players don't improve over the course of their careers - Punter and Hubbs for example. I like several of their younger players and Williams appears to have an extremely high ceiling. CRB has played hard ball with both Phillips and Schofield this year and it appears to be paying off for Schofield at least. I expect CRB to push these players to reach their potential and we will enjoy a program that will be on the rise for the next few years. Maybe I'm a cup half full type of guy?

Barnes is a great coach. Most of our players are freshmen and SEC officiating sucks big green donkey d!(is. Thank you.

Despite the disappointment the meter is pointing up on the basketball program.

This post is the reason why the UT fanbase is becoming a laughingstock.

Am I mad that we lost? Yes. Am I mad that we most likely won't be going to the NCAA? Yes.

Heaven forbid I come to this site where after a loss in any sport we don't have a post that is calling for the head coaches head. The same people who ran off Cuonzo are pissed off because we don't have consistency.

You can't have it both ways. Learn to lose, and maybe we might have a fighting chance moving forwards.

A Gator fan being the voice of reason. This team was picked to finish 13th in a 14 team league.

It's been a good run but exactly what you would expect from talented freshmen. Play great some nights and show you what they are capable of and play like freshmen on other nights showing you they don't understand what it takes to compete at a championship level in D1 basketball.

They need to win a couple of more games and a game or two in the SEC tournament and then make a good run in the NIT to get prepared for next year. They have definitely exceeded pre season expectations.

I live in Lexington where one or two people follow college basketball and are pretty well knowledgeable about the game. Honestly, I have been told they know what is coming out of Knoxville in the next few years and know the future is bright. They also know we have a helluva basketball coach.

Save your breath. Many on here are too upset over this loss and don't want anything positive said about Barnes and this team.

Plenty of us see the positives. This team has overachieved and Barnes has some really nice pieces to work with going forward, much more than anyone knew coming into the season.

We were never a tournament team given where we are in the rebuild, and playing in the NIT, while not up to ultimate program expectations, is a real positive imo.

I really only have two complaints....1. Despite the good/better than we thought players Barnes has brought in, he still hasn't gone and gotten the top 5-star difference maker or two that I thought he'd have brought in by now ....2. The 5 second half double-digit leads this team gave up this year that took what could've been a special season to just an overachieving season that some are even struggling to find promising.

Curious, why is his assistants coaching the huddles? I would think with the kind of money he gets he could do it!

Why would you have assistants if you are not going to let them coach? Should they be taking over every huddle? No. But if you have a staff that you trust and is competent you let them jump in occasionally and do what they are paid for as well. Do you think every huddle is around the HC in football? No different in basketball. This is crying over spilt milk.

One issue...Pearl took us to the Elite 8, not just the Sweet 16. Had us ranked #1 for a while too if remember. Barnes can do it!

They were missing Bowden last night. Plus Vandy has been on a run themselves lately with some big wins.

Yet I never see Barnes or the team make excuses in postgame notes in any of their losses. On the contrary, they often admit they didn't coach as well or play as well as needed.

Sometimes I think we expect too much too soon. I look at these final 3 games with SC, LSU, Ala and only see 1 win. Yet some of you are expecting more than that. You think we might beat SC on the road or Bama at home. But we will be dogs to both.

The experience gained this season with this young team added to hopefully better recruits in the future gives this BB program some hope when it appeared so bleak just a short time ago in preseason.

Yeah, this. All of this. You can both be disappointed with last night while still realizing that it's been a pretty good year overall. Kills me that people are jumping off the bandwagon after two games and forgetting everything else that happened.

Barnes can recruit. Weak on teaching however. Uses all of shot clock, throwing it up with 1 second left, Can't make free throws (easiest open shot in Basketball). Not Attacking the paint thereby not getting their bigs in foul trouble, don't follow their shot. Fundamentals not being taught. Geezs!!

I'm not bad-mouthing or anything but why do you keep up with UT so much? Why don't you just get it over with and throw that blue and ugly orange away and put on the beautiful power T Orange?

Totally understand having an "off" night; had a few of those myself when I played competitive sports. However, there's no excuse for the unprepared, lack of effort that the Vols displayed in the first half last night, especially, on defense. An aggressive, hair-on-fire defense is one of the main reasons of this teams success this season. They kicked it up in the second half and almost pulled it off, the terrible call by the ref with about 3 minutes to go, not withstanding.
