Barnes and His Recruiting

The drive bys, yes, but I think it's a valid concern and not just because we lost to Georgia, I think it's how our play has fallen off the past 4 games. The UK game was pretty much overlooked because we never win at UK.

Yea, I don't necessarily disagree. I have been a little disappointed with recruiting, but that has been put on pause now until I see what unfolds with the FBI investigation. Obviously, not every school is doing something wrong, but we just don't know everything right now. The problem is these same concerns come up after every loss, and we have exceeded expectations. We are a tournament team.

Uh, basically every school in the SEC has been signing 4 and 5 star players.
Barnes has not signed a 5-star since here. Schools like Miss. state, Auburn, and Vandy should not be out recruiting UT.

And those schools are about to get destroyed by the FBI.

Wait until the next few seasons after LSU and Even Vandy bring in their top 10 classes. We will continue to fall behind these teams while Barnes develops his 3*'s.

Not if they’re hammered by the FBI for recruiting fraud.

Your short term memory isn't very good. Pearl had no issues signing top recruits. Crews, Ramar Smith, Chism, Tyler Smith, Prince, Hopson, Hubbs,Maymon, etc.

No, we're not Duke, but we can attract enough top talent to compete for SEC championships. This has been proven by Mears, Devoe, O'Neil (stacked the roster), Peterson (put together roster that Pearl took to a no.2 seed), and Pearl.

Tyler Smith and Prince were transfers. Pearl originally lost the battles for them out of high school.

Ramar Smith fell in Pearl’s lap because everyone else stopped recruiting him due to character and academic issues.

And Martin was the coach who recruited and signed Hubbs.

Tennessee produces several 4 and 5 star players each year. Problem currently is Drew is getting them To go to Vandy.

The Drew brothers are as shady as they come. Wouldn’t shock me at all if Vandy ends up on the FBI list.

TN actually produces a good amount of basketball talent. Not as much as Texas, FL, or GA. But there is a ton of talent in TN and it's getting better (in both sports).

But it’s all in Memphis and Nashville. And unlike football, UT isn’t the only quality basketball program in the state. Very few Memphis kids with UM offers come to UT.

A ranked men's Tennessee basketball team after the last several years? Any crticism is like making an A on a test and having people break down the three questions you missed. Take the victory. Barnes is a winner and we aren't Duke.

Oh look we join Auburn, Florida, Bama, Mizzu, Texas tech, WV, Oklahoma, a&m. Xavier and Louisville as teams that just haven't recruited the right guys to succeed.

Will Duke or Clemson join that awful group today?

Barnes’ secret is now out! I urge everyone to forward all these messages about recruiting and especially in-state recruiting to:

athleticdirector@utk.edu
rick.barnes@tennessee.edu

@Vol_Hoops
@Vol_Sports

The writing is in the wall! Everyone else in the league is scooping up quality players at every position but Barnes is enjoying his “golden parachute”! Without 💯 effort, a less talented team will always lose!

I’ve seen so many complaints from several posters about Barnes not being able to land highly touted players.

At first, we complained about not having a coach who can develop players while Cuonzo was the HC. Now we’re complaining about not recruiting well enough to win games since Barnes has been here.

So which one is it? I’m confused.

I think some of us forget that UT is NOT as attractive in basketball going up against schools like UK, Duke, NC, Kansas.

I’m not saying it isn’t possible but on the other hand, most of these kids now haven’t seen UT basketball really accomplish anything the last several years.

It’s a harder sell than you might think.

No, this argument isn’t about defending this loss tonight or taking a shot at Barnes.

I’m just wondering what exactly do you mean by, “He needs to recruit better?”

I think that the playing field will become a little more equal in recruiting once the FBI brings down the hammer on the NCCAB

When Barnes arrived we were the last program in the conference a great player would want to sign with. He had to build it with 3 star players. Not many coaches can build a program that way.

Our program is making a major move this year. We are now on the map as an up and coming program. Barnes will get better players in each successive recruit cycle. When they get here they will be team players and we will win consistently. It won’t be the one and done approach. We have a coach that can recruit and develop players.

Look at the youth on this team. We are ahead of schedule. The next two years we will hold our own aginst the younger top ten classes being mentioned.

Almost all local kids when it comes to the 5 stars signed.

You mean 4 and 5 stars don’t flock to programs that have 4 coaches in 6 seasons? That’s just crazy talk.

Ziti says this is BS. Ziti is an angry poster. Don't be like Ziti.

The first sentence is correct. Those schools have better talent at their disposal, closer in proximity. It's not even debatable.

While I understand there is talent in TN, there is very little talent in East TN.

I reject the notion that Alabama gets top talent because of the in state basketball talent. It’s just silly.

I don't understand that either.. Barnes recruiting at least here has been the least impressive thing he's done. This team needs a true point guard that drives to the basket and creates his own shot. A big man that doesn't get the ball stuffed back in his face because the guys he's trying to post up are 3 or 4 inches taller than him..

Bone does that, but doesn't do it enough. And he doesn't play enough.

Just read all posts in this thread. We have the most manic, uninformed fanbase in the country.

Ziti complains, but I at least respect his knowledge of the landscape of college basketball, even if I don't think all of his complaints are legitimate.

A lot of the rest of these drive-by posters are devoting a lot of time to showing their ignorance in the face of the best basketball season any of us have experienced in 8 years.
