Barnes: “Highly Unlikely” Santiago Vescovi Plays this Season

Y'all don't realize that this is exactly what we'll get as long as Barnes is here. Successful season or two... then, terrible. Wash. rinse, repeat.

Its who he is! Ask any Clemson or Tejas fan. It'll drive you nuts soon enough.

ANYONE who thinks last year was "the most successful year ever" obviously must've LOVED participation trophies. What exactly did we win??

Troll. He doubled the amount of NCAAT appearances at Texas, and it took Clemson 21 more years to get to another Sweet 16 again. You suck at this game you are playing.

Barnes is here to build a sound foundation and elevate the program. We have a lottery pick or 2 on next year's roster and what could be a future coaching legend on the staff.

$5 million is a weak, tired argument. It's determined by the market. Putting the program in a strong state means another high level coach will likely take over once CRB retires.

Last year was a lot of fun, but it was not our best season. In the 2009-2010 season, Scotty Hopson was on the line with a one point lead with about two seconds left vs Michigan State to get us to the Final Four. We win that game 19 out of 20 times in that situation. It just wasn't meant to be. Cuonzo Martin got us to the Sweet Sixteen and except for a tough call that went against Jarnell Stokes at the end of the game, we might have advanced to the Elite 8.

That being said, we are lucky to have Barnes. He runs a good program. I think we massively overpaid him, but what else could we do? We needed a marquee sports program with football being down and Barnes was flirting with UCLA. Barnes is getting up there in years, and he looks older than he is. He looks like he's about 75. It will be interesting to see who replaces him. I figure he will be about like he was the last 5 years at Texas from here on out. For the kind of coin we are throwing around, we should be able to lure a coach who doesnt have to rebuild every few years, a coach who just reloads, like it would appear Pearl has now begun to do at undefeated Auburn.

Funny that so many think TENN could get a great football coach if only they would just pay the big bucks......Now TENN is paying the big bucks for a basketball coach and seeing that it doesn't always result in championships. Irony

In the 2019 NCAAT TN was a phantom foul away from it's 2nd EE.

In the 2018 NCAAT TN was an injured Kyle Alexander away from a probable FF.

Getting in the field consistently is a critical step. After that it takes some good fortune as every team from the second weekend forward is high level competition.

There are about 350 teams fighting to win the NCAAT.

Barnes won a share of the SEC regular season championship the year before last. Admittedly it was somewhat cheapened by the fact that the team we tied with, Auburn, beat us head-to-head in Knoxville, but those are the rules. It counted. Last year, though, Auburn beat us in the last game of the regular season and then smoked us in the SEC tournament, ending our hopes of repeating as regular season champions and of finally winning a tournament championship. I believe Barnes hasn't won a tournament of any kind since his days at Providence. In Barnes defense, no one could beat Auburn around that time. If Okeke doesn't get hurt, they win the national championship. They were a juggernaut.

Could SV play a limited amount of games and still RS.
Like the 4 game rule in FB.
I know Fulky played 9 games as a freshman and was under the 10 game rule & RS but his was injury related

It would have to be because of injury, no duke in basketball like football.

Slick Rick makes 5 mill a year to put a good product on the floor. IDGAF if this kid plays or not... if we don't make the tourney with the talent we have now... Barnes will have FAILED monumentally. Getting a good recruiting class every so often ISNT good enough.

Really? The talent we have right now? This is the least talented vol team I’ve seen in years. We lost 4 really good plays from last season. Bowden and turner should be guys that come off the bench. The kinda guys that might get hit shooting from time to stay and play extended minutes but that you don’t want out there to start the game. James is a talented kid but needs some time to find his game and fit in this team. Especially offensively. We have some really talented players on the way. And a couple already here that are ineligible. We’ll literally have an entirely different team next year. Just need to get the few kids that’ll be back as much experience as possible and take our lumps this season.

Your question: What did we win last year?
- Every home game
- Tied for most wins in a single season for our program (31)

How does anyone consider that a participation trophy?
I think what he is referring to is we did not win any kind of trophy or Banner. It was a great season. But it is really hard to win 31 games and not have at least a tournament Banner or Championship to show for it. With basketball being such a tournament sport, that's where Tennessee falls short constantly. Even before Barnes. Bruce Pearl is a better tournament coach. Rick Barnes is probably the better guy. I guess it depends to each individual fan as to what's more important.

He can not play a single minute unless it was in an exhibition game.

Fulkerson met the 30% rule AND the first 50% of the season rule AND had not yet used a regular redshirt. For a medical hardship waiver a player still only has 5 years to complete their eligibility once they've enrolled.

The 50% rule means that all games must have not been in the last 50% of the year. The 30% rule means that the player can only participate in 30% of the games (and they allow it to be rounded down... 30.99% still qualifies). And they need a valid, documented medical reason that prevents them from participating for the remainder of the season.

There is no limited participation rule that's similar to the one in football.

Turner could actually shut it down now and probably meet the 30% rule, would meet the 50% rule, but he'd have to apply for a waiver of his 5 year clock and the NCAA won't do that unless the same medical condition resulted in consecutive years to be missed. Zach Kent potentially has a case to be given a 6th year by the NCAA (good luck with that) and he can apply for it up until the start of his potential 6th year about 2.5 years from now.

Nobody answered my question. Just calling names and throwing insults. Says more about you than it does me. I know the truth hurts. I get it. NO... I don't think he should be fired. That's silly. But I do EXPECT better coaching than what we've seen so far. BTW... UTs history in basketball has WHAT to do with anything? I guess we should just be happy to field a team? What a loser attitude. Again... participation trophies all around.

Try harder troll...lol

won more than we have in a long time. Had a tram that was enjoyable to watch that could hang with anyone on the court, and the team was comprised of good dudes that I enjoyed rooting for and beat UK regularly.

yep, we're gonna struggle...Turner's shoulder, bench not shooting well, youngsters learning, no big man in the paint, etc., but there's a long way to go and we'll sneak up on some wins...with the development of our youngsters this year and Plavsic, Vescovi, along Bailey, Johnson, Springer and Walker coming in next year it's gonna be great run...that's my story and I'm sticking to it...:D

GO BIG ORANGE!

Losing 2 in a row versus a couple of historical top 25 programs sure brings out the nuts.
Football fans that only take notice of the basketball program when they’re good. We just came off of the best two year stretch in school history, we are about to bring in the best recruiting class in school history, and this dummy wants him fired. WE KNEW THIS WOULD BE A REBUILDING YEAR, and the fact that in a rebuilding year people expect us to make the tournament says a lot about how far this program has come.

Going into the season I was just hoping for a tourney bid. I still think we get one and next year we should be good. It is what it is.

It all depends on when/how/if the young players can scratch out their place in the lineup and step up. I expect them to get better, how much is the question, I think it will be close.

Not throwing insults. Said your post makes you “look clueless”. If you’re not clueless then you need to try harder.
Who said we won anything? We had a great team and it showed on the court at 31 wins and a month long stay at #1. Anybody that argues with that is stupid, however no, we didn’t win anything. Matter of fact the tourney was kind of a let down in my opinion, giving up a huge lead to Purdue and falling short of their ceiling. Last years team should’ve been in the final 4 and nobody knows that more than the kids on the court, and they said as much.

Barnes is a future HOF coach. Best we’ve had in a while. I liked Pearl and still do. But Barnes is great too. And more proven honestly.
Lastly, what about this team’s “talent” makes you think they are an automatic tourney quality team? Defense is great but they’re a rag tag bunch of streaky shooters that doesn’t have a true big playing, ever. Seems Turner is still less than 100% and there’s no backup PG and he’s a better 2 than PG anyway. James still learning. Johnson waste of scholly. Bowden has been streaky but he’ll find his stride. Fulky tough kid but seriously he’s a 4 playing 5 and not good at creating so inside presence isn’t there. Couple young guys that’ll be good but they’re basketball babies geez. I do hope they make tourney somehow but it’s not as monumental a letdown as you say based off of the “talent” you’re referring to. This is a 100% different team than last year.

Spot on brother! Why anyone would think this year’s team is anywhere close to last years team is beyond me. Yes we actually would have won the last two games if we could shoot the ball at a decent clip. The first year Grant, Admiral, Bone, and Kyle were here they had to figure things out and weren’t very good. When you lose that many players off your starting five, you have to realize there will be some growing pains. Kentucky experiences this almost every year. We just haven’t been getting elite prospects like Kentucky until next year. We will be alright. Just wait on it.

Yep, ncaa basketball is all about the tournaments... it’s nice to have a great regular season but in the end no one remembers good regular seasons, they remember tournament runs. I’d trade the 31 wins last regular season for barely squeaking into the tournament and making a final four!! Or even just winning the sec tournament... I mean my god I’ve witnessed Georgia, a complete trash basketball program win an sec tournament title but I’ve yet to see the Vols win one!!!!
