kiddiedoc,

I've been giving banjo lessons for 30+ years and suggest that you learn the basics from someone who really knows how to play. I've experienced a lot of people who are self taught or learned from a guy in a mall somewhere and the results were a lot of bad habits. It's harder to "unlearn" bad playing than it is to learn the right way from scratch.
I'm not familiar with many teaching videos but I have seen the Jimmy Mills (Ricky Skaggs) one. It is real good for someone who knows a little already and picks up easily.
Good luck!

Thanks for the updated advice. I really think I'm going to do this, so once I purchase one, I'll ask around town for teacher suggestions. I know some people associated with Medford's Black Record Collection and OCMS, so surely they will know who knows how to do it right.

My wife was kind of surprised by my most recent interest, but I've gotten a little bored with what I've been doing, and this would be a natural progression for my style. I've really gotten a little more into the Americana/Bluegrass style since moving back to East Tennessee. I'm also doing a little jazz theory to beef up my soloing and chord progressions and inversions.

Kipper Stitt who plays with Pine Mountain Railroad used to give lessons in Knoxville. Also, you can check with the guys at Pick N Grin on Kingston Pike, and with Ciderville Music store over in Powell, they can hook you up with an instructor.

The guitar player in the video is John Mayberry from Gainesboro, TN. He plays mandolin in Ronnie Reno's band.
He plays a lot of Tony Rice stuff.

Thanx to all for your response to my "firstborn thread" - and for not flaming me for being slightly off-topic.

I especially enjoyed the video, undertaker. And I'm amazed to find so much talent - VolNation is a great place. Kiddiedoc, hope you enjoy the banjo as much as I have over the years. And I do mean years - my copy of "Earl Scruggs & the 5-String Banjo" is on vinyl LP!

Happy pickin' and GO VOLS!!! :dance2:
