Bang Shootie conversation

Anyone check the pricing on a Marlin Lever Action .30 .30????? Model 336 going for nearly 1k beat up.
Looked some up. Saw as low as $450 used. Most $750 and up. New without scope in hte $1200 plus range. That's crazy. Wonder why the 336 is going for so much. Had one in the past that was fairly old and well used but great condition. 15 years ago it was going for roughly $200-$400 decent used. Son got one brand new off his cousin less than $400 about 6 years ago maybe. But, it was his cousin and he didn't want it. Won it or something. not even sure he ever took all the money for it. tHey apparently had some minor QC check issues factory at some point. We could never get the iron site to come on target. Front bead was too short. Always shot high off target no matter how we set the rear slide. No matter though as he preferred a scope anyway. I only shot my old one iron sight as all my hunting spots were in creek bottoms. Always preferred the Marlin over the Winchester because of the side eject.

The 336 30-30 was always my preferred for what I did. Otherwise I was a Browning rifle fan. Had the A-bolt .270, and the BAR .270, and an old Remington Woodmaster 30-06. Ruger .44 magnum carbine. If I can't tote a 30-30 give me a BAR .270 (or 243) or leave me at home. Fine rifle and dispels any notion that bolt actions are more accurate.

But here's a map of Memphis

Came in from the main drag one time from MS into Memphis to Graceland. Wow. Looked at wife and told her not to look at no one in the eyes. Was a little naive to Memphis when we were in school over in Henderson. Prolly took a little too much freedom hitting Bealle St and not enough caution.

Graceland area is rough. City wants to pretty that stretch up on Highway 51 (EP Blvd) from I-55 to Graceland but state is a decade+ behind on basic road maintenance there. You can barely navigate on that road and that leads to blight since the locals avoid it to prevent potholes/blowouts/undercarriage damage.

Beale is hit or miss. Its got worse the past 5 yrs or so. Id say 15 years ago, it was reasonably safe.

Of course, my better half nearly got carjacked at Hacks Cross/Shelby. They failed to realize she carries...

Does that really matter with her though! She makes grown men in here cry with just a keyboard.

Had a college buddy went to bealle st after graduating (late 80's) and made a pretty good start in life with a sandwich shop type joint that delivered to all the local white collar businesses. Was from Memphis and went back for a bit. Makes Jackson home. Was involved with Youth Town mostly as a job after his food business wrapped up. You prolly would have never crossed paths. He's 61 now and still looks 40 and probably been in Jackson full time longer now than you would have been old enough to know you crossed paths.

As far as sketchy goes, I used to keep both eyes peeled when driving into Henderson from Corinth when I commuted to FHU. Actually my entire commute from ATL to FHU was sketchy once you rolled into B'ham. I'd cut off on the west side and go through Jasper, Florence, Tishomingo, Corinth, Finger, Henderson. There was a whole lot of nothing on those roads from Jasper, AL to Henderson, TN. But running 75/24/40 to get around to Jackson then down to Henderson would have added some serious time to an already 7 hour trek through no man's land.

Beat up guns selling on Gunbroker for $800+. Out of my range.

Glad we already got a 30-30 and a 243. Plenty for the hunting he does on the farm. Glad we're not in the market for a hunting rifle right now. Even at that, there is no situation where I'd pay $800-$1300 for a 30-30 anyway. My beloved BAR .270 is getting on up there too. I knew there's come a day I'd regret not holding onto all those rifles. A Woodmaster 30-06, a BAR .270, BBR A-Bolt BOSS Stainless .270, Ruger 44 mag Carbine, Ithica 1911 45 ACP WWII issue with 7 clips in oiled banana leaves, two barrels and a US Cavalry leather holster, Winchester 16ga side by side...all would pay for quite a few modern luxuries at current prices. The .45 is my true regret. I was in my 20's. It was an officer pistol, though not Navy issued to who I got it from who was the officer. The gunshop guy was slightly reluctant to trade cause he knew what it was worth and who I got it from. But, he said if I was serious I could have any pistol from a certain case, ammo, and holster on even trade...and that 92FS was really tugging at me. My mind kept telling me how inaccurate that .45 was. Both barrels obviously warn and worn out slide spring. Loosey goosey. Wouldn't hit a watermelon at 10 paces. But, still should have never let it go. All of those firearm possessions were while single. Marriage and family needs when things would be tight depleted the inventory. I did circle back and get the kid hte Mossberg .243 composite. Not a bad rifle actually. Been impressed and satisfied. Then he cut his own deal for his cousins 30-30. And my wife wanted to get a a pistol for the house, so about 3 years ago picked up a S&W M&P .380. So, I'm down to a single shot 20, the pistol and his two hunting rifles. Used to have 5 rifles, 2 shotguns, and 4 pistols. Don't miss the King Cobra 6" .357 all that much. It was a beast to tote around, and only used it for target with 38 special rounds. You never had to load it or tote it though. If someone saw that big a** chrome beast, it was deterent enough.
