Should Rocky Top be sung with "Woo"?

Woo, yee-haw, Oh Yeah....

I really don't care if fans scream the friggin alphabet during the games if that's what it takes to make Neyland the loudest, most feared stadium in college football. Rocky Top in all its forms are already so annoying that opposing coaches play it at full blast during practice before they play UT. Wouldn't it be nice to hear 100,000 people singing it at once?

A great patriot once said, " Give me liberty or give me WOOOOO " I'm paraphrasing. I could be wrong.

Two trombone players, specifically. I won't name them here to protect their dignity (what of it they had, heh).

These guys - several of the trombones, actually - had an issue with director Jim Sparks after one of the section leaders was benched for high-fiving a relative while marching to the Salute to the Hill. During Rocky Top, they would do a mock-mentally-challenged salute (wrist in front of the nose, hand cocked back over the right eyebrow, etc) and make some guttural utterance when the "Wooo" happens now. It caught on in the section, but some of the other sections thought it was a neat idea and started doing it, er, right.

Hey Ash, this is Chris from ƟO. How ya doin'?

Not bad, just enjoying a good reminisce between diaper changes. What's up with you?

I tried watching some UT games with my son this season, but it didn't work out because of all the crying. I didn't want my son to see me that way. Ba-dum-bum.

And oh yeah... the unnamed trombone players at the center of all this just happen to be ƟO alumni. Heh heh.

Why am I not shocked? I actually learned the story of the Woo from Juggs.

I'd say it actually is a tradition now. While it might not have been around while most of the older posters were in school, it has definitely become ingrained in the fabric of the song when performed at UT athletic events.

The Salute to the Hill hasn't been around that long either, but it has also become a tradition. When it had only been around for three or four years, KPD made the band not do it once because it was supposedly affecting traffic flow. The number of phone calls to the University and KPD in protest made sure it was done the next week.

Like it or not, I don't see the "Woooo!" going anywhere until a majority of fans who do it have cycled out in one way or another.

It's not my place to tell a person what to say or do but I was glad when they got rid of the Smokey howl.:bad:

not our fight song.

When's the last time you sang "Down the Field?" Can you even hum it?

Official songs aside, Rocky Top is what Tennessee is known for, and is widely thought of as our fight song even though it technically isn't. It is what we sing to get pumped up. Official or not, it is still our fight song in practice.

The song always ended in a baritone "Rocky Top Tennessee"
I don't know when the girlish "woo" came about, but it makes me sick to my stomach.
