They are a superior offense, defense and special teams. They have superior everything to us right now. We should be trying to get our program to that level, instead we are tearing our players, coaches, team and university apart. They beat our ass. 90% of the fan base expected to go 10-2 this year and that goal is still in front of us and attainable.

I know it was bad loss but who had this down as a win prior to season??

And 9 or 10 starters out before or during game?

Thats what I thought!

It's absolutely a litmus test. Until you are at that level, you can't expect to truly compete on a national scale. We still have vast improvements to make.

The game exposed a glaring weakness in our 2 deep from a talent perspective. That's what concerns everyone.

I expected to be 10-2 with no blow outs. We got blown out. That's my disappointment, but you know what we beat Florida and can still win the east. By losing both west games we don't control our own destiny that sucks. I'm disappointed I just can't see tearing the OC who a a record offense the week prior, bash a QB that's we'd be .500 without

When Bama plays in the final 4, you'll see how far they are from the top 3 teams. If, per chance, it is a close game(s) - then our ascent to their level perhaps isn't that far removed.

I would have loved to start the season off with a game vs. Bama. They started off with a perennial power - USC. This is the only true way in my mind to measure where we are against them (starting players vs. starting players).

It makes me wonder if we will get to Atlanta.

Yeah, Same feeling here. The bama game is the first game they played after the A&M loss. I expected a better showing, but realistically, didn't expect a win without a lot of luck. But, how will they respond after the bama loss? They could easily lose to South Carolina, but, it all depends on how they respond to the second loss. That is all on the coaches, IMO. So, I think it was a litmus test on how they respond to the first loss.

Not a litmus test, but we need to get our program to that level.

IOW, Bama was a litmus test.

But it showed just how far the Vols are from becoming a championship team, if nothing else.

We almost beat them last year on the road. If it was not for injuries why would we not expect to beat them this year at Neyland with a senior QB and experienced team vs their freshman QB? The answer is unfortunately coaching and depth. They are far ahead in both. They knew we beat them in physicality last year and would not allow that again. Even Kirby Smart said that this was the game they circled on their calendars this year for that reason. Saban makes adjustments for deficiencies better than anyone else, and Butch not so much (with exception of Shoop who has been a great addition and won us few games with his second half adjustments alone).

Seeing the talent disparity with Bama play itself out on the field made me really start paying attention to recruiting a couple of months earlier than I normally would. Last year a lot of experts were telling us that 2016 was a class for filling needs and 2017 would be a big haul for elite talent due to a bumper crop of elite instate prospects. Now I see how few of those elite instate guys are committed to the Vols and I'm starting to worry about the future. We should have a top 5 class this year.

Alabama is the gold standard. They are the litmus test. They have to beaten for us to go undefeated in the regular season. They have to be gone thru to win this league championship most likely.
And after taking the test on Saturday, we are a ways off as a program. From the AD all the way down to the sock washers. A LONG way off.
People could also take this time to quit hatin on Saban and admit he is better than anyone not named Neyland or Bryant. And he is getting damned close to those two immortals. It is truly remarkable to be that good for that long, and to apparently be getting stronger as opposed to fading away. Toothless Bama fans are so lucky to have gotten him as their coach.

"O" Bama is an NFL team. Plain and clear. Kiffin is a former NFL head coach. Saban was an assistant for the Cleveland Browns. At least half of the current team will end up being on NFL teams.
