UT isnt even Bama's greatest rival. The barn is. And I will never feel the same hate for UT as I do for the barn. I cant wait for UT to play Auburn. Itll be a win win for me, but im still gonna pull for Tenn.
I disagree.
I'll grant you, however, that the Alabama/Auburn game is greater in pure "hate". If hate is how a rivalry is judged, then you're correct because it seems that the hatred in the Alabama/Tennessee rivalry is not equally proportioned.
But if you base the greatness of a rivalry by its significance on championships, the comparisons are not close. Only during a short stint in the 1980s, after Auburn hired Pat Dye, did the winner of the Alabama/Auburn game impact SEC championships and rarely, if ever, has the winner had a role in determining the national champion.
Alabama and Tennessee are two most tradition rich schools in the conference. The two teams are first and second, respectively, on the SEC leader board for SEC titles. For most of the series, the game had a national significance and its importance in the SEC was just taken for granted. From a historical perspective, only the Georgia/Auburn rivalry can come close or, perhaps, Tennessee/ Georgia but these rivalries fall short. I guess an argument could be made for the Alabama/Ole Miss game but who in the heck would suggest that this game has really mattered in the last thirty to forty years.
Eh, back to the point, the third Saturday in October is the best rivalry in the SEC.
