BAMA biggest game to 40 and up!

Does our cross divisional win or loss not count towards our sec record?

*Smartass snarky remark not required.

The east division and it's rivalries are political creations, made to promote the SEC. Our rivals were Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Georgia Tech

...

I hate Florida, but I want to beat Alabama every time we play them. Even though we are behind in the series, Florida is not the same. They don't have the history. They don't have the respect.

Iron sharpens Iron. Alabama is the measuring stick. They are who we are supposed to compete with.

^This. I'm 35 and grew up listening to my Grandfather recall the stories of the General, the Bear, the beer barrel, vandy pansy and the little yellow bees. It was ingrained in me to have hatred in my heart for Bama. This was compounded later in life when I lived in Alabama for 3 years attending law school. Yet even then as we were still beating them in the waning years of our last dynasty there was a respect between myself and the fans of the bleeding elephant. As if some force was always in the background, unspoken, yet present. I would wear my UT hat in the unholy land of crimson and get the "nod". A telling yet subtitle reminder that there was respect for the long storied traditions of our rivalry. A knowing deep inside that our two teams have such a rich history that cannot be denied.

I experienced this time and time again in my 3 year exile. The rivalry of Tennessee Alabama is bigger than the game of football. Something I think a lot (though definitely not all) of the younger ESPN generation of fans don't get. Something that the 24hr news cycle and new political/monetary media conversation on their ideas of "rivalry" tries to wash away for their own desires.

Florida as another poster stated is "new money". They weren't a storied program before the Spurrier era. It is a modern construct exacerbated by the divisional split. It is most certainly an important game. But UT v Bama...is as much a part of fall as the changing leaves. Football is cyclical and UT Bama is the yardstick game that measures the two programs throughout their history. When we were up they were down. When they have been up we have been down. There is no better thermometer to the wellness of our program to me than the outcome of the 3rd Saturday in October.

I am 49 and changes from time to time, depending on who had been better! Bama with Bear, Florida with Spur and Myer, Bama with Saben, Georgia always top 2-3!

This!!!! He gets it. He understands. I wish I could have put it as well. No matter when it is played, it's the Third Saturday in October!

My Hat's off to you , Sir!

I'm 45 and Florida has surpassed Bama as the most important game. Perhaps it was Fulmer's 10 year win streak, but if you look at UT's record against the gators since Spurrier arrived until now, it's horrid and damn embarrassment.

Back in the day ('77 grad), Bama was definitely the biggest game and rival. Even though we didn't play them every year, Auburn was the most hated.

I'm 44 and it is definitely Florida for me! I respect the Alabama rivalry for its tradition. I also respect the Alabama program for what they have accomplished. But I've been in the Air Force for 24 years and I have great friends from both Alabama and Florida. In my personal experience, the Bama fans are much classier than Florida fans. I have zero respect for the average a$$hole from Florida (99gator and lawgator excluded)!

I'm 53 and it's Bama for me all the way. I live in Florida, hence my screen name FlVols, and I absolutely hate the Gators, but the Alabama game is the biggest rivalry for us as Vols, as far as I'm concerned! Go Vols! Beat Bama

Give up on beating FL we never could beat them on a regular basis. Bama we have owned before in my lifetime so it's time it changed. They get beat by A&M then we will to (win).

Bama is our biggest rival... I am 30, but I am from Alabama so I know the history of the rivalry better than most. Florida, doesn't bother me as bad as an adult since MushChump and Meyer no longer coach there. I look at them as a respected rival.

However, every saturday in the Fall I am for two teams... The Big Orange and anyone who plays the Crimson turds! Go Vols!

Guys, I completely understand the magnitude of East Division wins to Tenn versus West wins. That being said, to fans 40 or older(I'm almost 41) the BAMA game holds the honor of being #1 to a lot of us. Most would say Florida or Georgia because of our division and that is a very strong argument. Growing up as a pre-teen and teenager/college in the 80's and early to mid 90's nothing rivaled the 3rd Saturday in October. My saddest memories are losses to Bama such as the 1990 9-6 loss. My greatest memories are 1982 vs Bama to end a long streak. We dominated Bama from 1995 thru 2004 only losing to them once. Our team is more talented than we have been in years and we have a week off to rest/heal and prepare for Bama. We will probably be 10-14 point underdogs when the line comes out. I don't know if this is the year as we may be a year away, but this rivalry is about to get good again. College football is better when Tenn/ Bama rivalry is strong. Go big Orange and please unite to hate Bama as much as I do! GO VOLS!

I'm 59 and this is exactly how I feel. My daughter is 19 and told me a couple of years ago, "Florida is my Alabama." I understand exactly what she means, especially since we live near Orlando (behind enemy lines), but I will always hate Ala-stinkin'-bama more than any other team.

I'm 20, currently go to UT and grew up my entire life in Alabama. I really hate Florida, but no other team/fanbase can piss me off as much as Bama. When I was a lot younger and we were beating them and they SUCKED, their fans consistently thought they would win the national title every year when DJ Hall and Brodie Croyle were their team. Saban is the biggest a$$hole in sports. I get evil vibes from him. They have Lame Kitten. They ride around with just hounds-tooth hats on their cars, the number 15, and/or always have flags flying year-round. Way too cocky. It's so annoying living there. No way Florida fans can be worse to be around 365 days a year. Hope we beat the snot out of them.

Rocket, I am assuming you are from Huntsville. I grew up in Athens as an AL fan. Thank god I saw the light!

Don't make that statement about Gator fans until you live there. They are just as cocky as AL fans and have no reason to be. I think that is worse.

I think stopping the series is foolish. The best thing to do is rebuild the program to the level to compete with Alabama every year....then if you want to quit it, fine. But to run while you're getting your ass beat just means you'll run again later when someone else is...JMO

Good point. Guy you quoted probably called Spurrier a quitter too.

42. Is it possible to despise AL, FL and GA equally? In Chattanooga, we have so many fans of these three (mostly bandwagon), it makes me sick. I want to rip someone's license plates off every time I see a Tennessee state tag with a UA, UGA, or UF logo. They are everywhere in Chattanooga.
