Part of knowing how to manage money is knowing when something's a false economy. Holding the line on "value" for a backup catcher when your starter A) hasn't been good for two years and B) is going to miss at least a month is a false economy.

Evan Gattis may end up bailing Frank Wren out. There is no point to Laird getting more than one or two starts a week right now though.

Too bad they are going with a platoon.

He has monster power. He's a legit 6'4/240. That much is evident. He has a good walk rate. I mean, you aren't ****ing around when you slug .574 in the minors.

Can he make adjustments? Who knows? That's the question with every rookie. It's obvious Gattis has a MLB starting bat...in a perfect world, he'd be a perfect 1B/C/DH for an AL team. Think Mike Napoli. That's probably the best comparison. The problem is two of those three spots are filled, and he hasn't proven he can handle everyday catching duties.
When you say he hasn't proven he can handle the everyday catching duties, do you mean defensively, durability, or what?

Which makes me think he could end up as part of a trade at the deadline...

He probably has a lot more value to an AL team than he does to a NL team with ensconced starters at 1B and LF. That's why I think he needs to be catching every day, at AAA if necessary. The Braves have four months to figure out if this guy can be the future catcher or not.

My baseball knowledge is limited so I hope you guys don't mind me asking some dumb questions.

Defensively. Durability he seems fine. The concern is that he's not agile enough to block the plate.

You guys are ruining the backgammon thread with the Gattis/Ross talk. There's a thread for that, and it's already been covered ad nauseum.

Also, Gattis only has 114 career games catching in the minors. Barely a full season.

For example, Christian Bethancourt has caught 304 games in the minors.

I didn't know how to play Backgammon until a few weeks ago. Girlfriend taught me at Ormsby's.

For the record, the MLB ipad app may be the best app ever. It's very well done in all aspects.

I haven't. Forgive my ignorance, but can I actually use that skin on a Blackberry?

I'm not sure, that's why I was asking. Depending on your device, it may work well.
