Figured I would start a thread tracking our pursuit of another regular season sec championship. With 5 to go, clearly we control our own destiny. Both LSU and KY 1 game back. We beat LSU Saturday, we pretty much knock them out of the running imo. Then we got
@ole miss
vs ky
vs miss st
@ aub
Take care of ole miss, then ky in Knoxville (them without Travis) should probably decide who wins the reg season championship. Although miss st and @aub aren’t gimmies, I like our chances if we are healthy.
I do think we have a little flexibility and room for error with a 1 game lead in that if we go 4-1 in our next 5, that will be forgiving enough and things will work out in our favor still imo.
With respect to our closest competition.
LSU:
vs tn
Vs aTm
@bama
@fl
Vs vandy
(They will drop at least two of these)
KY:
Vs aub
Vs arky
@tn
@ole miss
Vs fl
(I don’t see them losing any of these except to us)
How do you like our chances?

I think UK vs Auburn is an interesting matchup. Many have written AU off, but they are still very talented, almost beat UK first time around, and UK is in their first game without Travis. I’m keeping my eye on that one this weekend.

Top 3 is pretty much decided, how they’ll finish is TBD...with the 1 seed getting the 4th which is likely to be South Carolina or Ole Miss it would be great to win the regular season outright and get that 1 seed. Would put LSU and Kentucky on the other side of the bracket and give us a very makeable road to the SECT championship game.

Keep in mind, a tie is still an SEC regular season championship. We'd have to lose 2 games to be in jeopardy of not winning the SEC regular season title.

I thought the tiebreaker was head to head?

Tiebreaker is only used for SECT seeding, not for determining who is champion. In the event of a tie or mulitple teams, all teams are considered the regular season champion officially.

Last year we ended tied with Auburn, Auburn got the #1 seed due to head to head. In 2000 it was a 4 way tie between us, UK, Florida, and LSU.

It would be a huge feather in Auburn's cap. I have no idea what will ultimately happen, but Auburn needs this game badly, and this win on the road would be big.

Auburn is the one team that scares me to death because they live and die by the 3. I know it was Arkansas but their entire starting lineup made at least 2 threes apiece last night and 3 of their guys made at least 3. That’s a recipe for disaster for us.

I'm not really sure why so many seem concerned about Auburn; there's a decent chance that game might be pretty much meaningless to us.

Imo Auburn is the 4th best team in the SEC. Im starting to lean they may upset us or ky (or at least scare one of us more than a teenager at camp crystal lake on a Friday night)

Well... we still control our own destiny. Since we didn’t beat LSU, we need to win out to win the regular season championship. Other routes possible. Beat KY, our chances look MUCH better. LSU still got at Bama and at Florida.

Think any suitors pro or college will come after Coach Barnes. I hope not I want the guy here.

If Tennessee wins the regular season title, it will be the first time in school history we have won back-to-back conference titles in basketball.

That is amazing considering that TN has about 9 or 10 championships. Other than KY, I wonder which other schools have done it. Probably Florida when they had their Nattys. Maybe Bama with CM Newton and/or a couple of Dale Brown LSU teams. Maybe Vandy.

Barnes is building his final basketball legacy at TN. He's not going to start over again. He'll see how far he can take this. Plus I think his mother is an hour or 2 from Knoxville.
