Back Off Crompton

Why should we back off Crompton? He has cost us 3 ball games already this year. (8-23 passing with 67 yards) I was hoping Peyton would put Crompton stuff on over there Saturday. Don't be surprised if Phil has Crompton starting again on Saturday. He will never become a legend.

Crompton has already become a legend in his own regard. We will all talk about his performance on the football field for years to come.

Ture. As KB5252 pointed out, this is an obvious flaw. I just believe this can be corrected. Yes, he should have learned this by now, but God only knows what steps Clawson has planted in his head to go through before checking off receivers.

I can assure you that Clawson is much more effective doing his job than JC is at doing his job.

I wonder if CPF and Peyton had a heart to heart about JC. It wouldn't surprise me.

best post thus far. Using common sense if there are MULTIPLE people open on all the pass plays and crompton cant get the ball to them then thats ALL CROMPTONS FAULT. Saying anything about clawson is ridiculous. I think he is calling great plays and crompton is ripping them to shreds. Crompton has absolutely no idea what the defense is going to do or even what they're lined up in. just pisses me off. Clawson is doing a great job. Crompton is making him look really really bad.

I can definitely see your viewpoint. I guess I'm just a bit more optimistic on Crompton considering he has a strong arm and can be mobile. I'm hoping that he can be taught to check his second, third, and sometimes fourth receiver. I believe this can be learned, but I know it requires some degree of intelligence. I just tend to fall on the side that he is smart enough, and under the right tutor will develop.

Again, thank you for having a mature and informed debate with me instead of resorting to name calling and ape-like comments many others in this thread have directed towards me.

This is Crompton's 4th year!! If he has not learned this basic skills he never will. He is terrible

How many losses are you willing to take while waiting on this correction?

I"m sorry guys, but it's the same play calling that's always been. That comes from Fulmer. He needs to turn loose the leash he has on Clawson and let him do his job.

Wrong. Play calling isn't a science. It has nothing to do with Fulmer, with the exception he hasn't pulled Crompton soon enough. Clawson is getting to do mostly what he wants to do, its just that with Crompton, they have reduced the plays by 3/4.

BTW and FWIW, Fulmer was one of the best play callers EVER at UT in the late eighties and early nineties when he was OC.

You just said the key words there. College Football has changed significantly in 20 years. In the late 80's/early 90's, the option was starting to rise again as a true offense. Today, the spread is king, with a lot of speed needed on defense.

Actually, the option was used by very few teams by the late eighties and early nineties. Ut played in a pro-style multiple offense, not much different than the one they are playing in today. They ran the ball well and threw it downfield even better. See Chuck Webb, Reggie Cobb, Tony Thompson, Charlie Garner, Carl Pickens, Alvin Harper, Anthony Morgan, Anthony Miller

No, the spread isn't the king. It is a fad used by some younger coaches. People are figuring it out. The very best teams don't use it and won't use it and know how to defend it.

Not many run the spread 100%, but a lot of the best do run it in some form or another. USC, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Texas, Missouri, are all teams that run that offense in some form or another.

Crompton is horrible. He may be a true vol fan, but we all are. If he were all about the team, he would bench his self. Besides everytime the camera goes to him on the sidelines, he looks like "who gives a crap". The guy is a cancer and needs to be put to rest.

no athlete in his right mind would bench himself. That's just ridiculous

Let me make something clear - One player does not win, nor lose the ball game. I lay the UCLA loss at the feet of the coaches. I lay the Florida loss at the feet of the special teams, and also coaches. The Auburn loss was definitely lost on the offensive side of the ball, and Crompton could have done much more to put us in a better position to win.
