Back Off Crompton

Is it pretty widely known in Knoxville that JC has a very cocky attitude, and isnt very respected by his team mates?

Yes, he's made some mis-reads, over throws, and threw some picks. Every QB in history has done so.

Don't ya'll remember when Crompton was getting recruited that he was highly touted as a dual threat QB? He also convinced several others from that class (D-MO, for example) to come to Tennessee. Crompton is like most of us on here - Here's a true Tennessee Volunteer fan. Once he signed, he was part of what many considered to be the best signing class in the nation.

Now, a bunch of armchair knuckleheads are claiming he's an awful quarterback and should be benched. You see the problem is not Crompton, he's just not being developed by his coaches. His game play often looks pitiful, but that's not ALL his fault. Dave Clawson should take the majority of the blame for our offensive woes this season. :banghead2:

I'm sorry but you simply couldn't be more dead wrong. His passes aren't simply errant, they're out in completely open space! Now either the receivers are all running the wrong routes, or Crompton is just a bad quarterback.

I miss Trooper Taylor btw. That man did wonders for our backs and receivers.

I'm not going to badmouth him. He tries hard and he's all-Vol. However, he's not got his head in the game. I find it impossible to believe that he was playing this poorly all Summer. His practice play, and real game play must be polar opposites, else we would have heard about these issues all Summer long. H'es trying to do so much, that he can't break the game down. It's sad. It's not like a guy getting paid to play for some team he never followed or cared about. The kid is a lifelong Vol, and had the tools coming out to play for UT. Somewhere along the line, something happened. I hate it for him.

Either the receiver or QB have the play wrong when that happens. He's not aiming for one spot and it's going way over to another...he just simply isn't on the same page. Just not grasping the new system, unfortunately.

As for being a relative, I'm not. Good lord, I'm just a plain 'ol Vol fan. And I may appear stupid to some of you, but I just think Crompton has the tools to become a good quarterback. That's my opinion. I'm not bashing anyone else's opinion regarding other topics. I have the right to voice mine, and I've done so.

So SOJ, your genius detective skills have failed you once again. I'm not related, or even a friend, and Jonathan Crompton. I'm just a die-hard Tennessee Vol fan voicing my opinion. :stop:

Not being critical here but where do you see this potential from Crompton? If he is not the problem then what is? Our receivers sure are certainly up to the task. Our OC has had to dumb the offense down so much it is hardly an offense anymore. I just want to know what your opinion on the horrible state of our offense is? And where do you put the blame?

People should back off of Crompton. This is beyond being his fault. It is absurd for the coaches to continue to put him on the field.
I have officially turned to corner to feeling bad for the guy. It is not like he is playing poorly purposely and maliciously.

That said, I think it is time to explore other options.

That is an entirely different aspect. Yeah, he should have already been pulled. Dude was saying Crompton's performance isn't his fault, and that is BS.

No, DUDE, was saying exactly what you read - People should back off Crompton.

I clearly stated he has made plenty of mistakes. Not his mother, his father, or the pagan gods. Crompton's fault, and no one elses.

I"m sorry guys, but it's the same play calling that's always been. That comes from Fulmer. He needs to turn loose the leash he has on Clawson and let him do his job.

and he has...they are to blame as much if not moreso as he...

Yes he needs to be benched, maybe permanently..Saturday was the worst performance I have witnessed in 35 years of Tennessee football from that position..

Im glad he is a loyal Tennessee Volunteer..that doesnt mean the ship needs to go down with him when it could possibly be salvaged to some extent..

as tessio said after he was caught trying to bump off michael corleone, "nothin personal to it. i always liked mike. it was strictly business."

First, thanks for kindly giving me the opportunity to answer a good question - and for posing it to me without initial insult. In my opinion, the problem is that we brought in a new offensive coordinator (which, we had to since Cut left). Now, instead of developing gameplans around our players and teams strengths - i.e. - running the ball, fade patterns, play action, spreading the field with our speed - he has tried to mold our players to fit into HIS scheme. Now, this of course is the expected thing to do - over the course of about two seasons. For him to come in late in the spring and have the team learn an entire new offensive philosophy and playbook, plus execute it each down is asking a bit much. He should have been more flexible.

Personally, I haven't seen anything which shows me the new OC has had to dumb down the offense. I believe that's his playbook. His bunch formations are so easily detectable, that nearly everyone knows the formation will spread to the sidelines, with options over the middle after the snap. All you have to do to defend this is play zone each down! No matter whether it's a 3-4, 4-3, or a zone blitz, all of those will work against this offense. Thus, Crompton's choices are limited, and if a receiver does manage to get open, it will only be for a split second.

So, ultimately, I feel the blame goes on Dave Clawson. Sure, Crompton could have played much better by cutting down on his mistakes. But even with a mistake free game from him, our offensive strategy is mediocre at best.

In the words of the famous scarecrow: "If I only had a brain."

JC is running a simplified offense with NO option to check-off at the line, and after the past four games you still believe in him?

You can have your opinion if you'd like, and we can all tell you that you're wrong.

We are not just calling him a bad QB. His record stands for itself!!!!!!!!!:whistling::popcorn:

I do believe your stated reasons are part of the problem here, although I would tend to assign more blame to Crompton in this situation than you do.

From what I have seen Crompton has a hard wired tendency to stare down the primary receiver and does not look to option B and C much at all. That is certainly a QB issue and every defense keys in on it.

Crompton has issues with managing the game, of this there is no room for debate.

I blame Clawson for not being able to see this wasn't going to work before the season but Crompton has not improved so far over the coarse of this season, in fact in many respects he has seemed to take a step back at times. I simply do not see much reason to be optomistic about him right now from what I have seen.

How do you explain JC's great ability to stare down one reciever on every single snap? Look at the game and make sure that you notice that in the Auburn game, JC didnt not once take his eyes off the first receiver and tried to throw to that receiver no matter how they were covered.

Why should we back off Crompton? He has cost us 3 ball games already this year. (8-23 passing with 67 yards) I was hoping Peyton would put Crompton stuff on over there Saturday. Don't be surprised if Phil has Crompton starting again on Saturday. He will never become a legend.

I can definitely see your viewpoint. I guess I'm just a bit more optimistic on Crompton considering he has a strong arm and can be mobile. I'm hoping that he can be taught to check his second, third, and sometimes fourth receiver. I believe this can be learned, but I know it requires some degree of intelligence. I just tend to fall on the side that he is smart enough, and under the right tutor will develop.

Again, thank you for having a mature and informed debate with me instead of resorting to name calling and ape-like comments many others in this thread have directed towards me.

Ture. As KB5252 pointed out, this is an obvious flaw. I just believe this can be corrected. Yes, he should have learned this by now, but God only knows what steps Clawson has planted in his head to go through before checking off receivers.
