Azzanni: 'This is not a pro-style huddle game anymore'

I cannot stand subbing for the sake of subbing.

Receivers have to get in a groove just like everyone else. Can't do that watching from the sideline.

Subbing a winded player is one thing. But they take the offseason conditioning program too seriously to have a single reciever that can't play 10 consecutive snaps. I don't care how fast the tempo is.

I doubt there are very many WRs taking 10 consecutive snaps anywhere.

I agree. CBJ needs to go find a successful WR coach.

So say Butch does hire this "successful WR coach" and our WR's still struggle making key plays, are you going to blame him just like Coach Z and shove him out of the door just because us fans aren't satisfied with the production of our receivers? It's not going to make an difference if you don't have a QB who can consistently make key throws which Dobbs, does not. It works both ways and sometimes it's not all the coach's fault. That's what people keep failing to comprehend.

Yeah I lol'd at the "people just don't understand today's game." If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen Coach. It comes with the territory and frankly, the criticism up to this point is more than warranted.

His guys definitely need to step up, but it's hard to argue that most fans really understand the intricacies.

Great strategy Zach..... you're catching heat because the production of the position group you specifically coach has been piss poor, damn near embarrassing for 3 years running despite some very talented players. So now, when you're getting much deserved, well-earned criticism, you decide to play the "fans are just stupid" card and just don't understand today's game. Well done buddy.

Also, which is it? On one hand you have to play so many WRs because none of them can possibly go more than 4 plays in a row, even though we typically use 80-90% of the play clock despite not huddling up. On the other hand you make the statement that youll only play 4 WRs if those are the best players to help us win. What?

Hopefully the S&C coach and lack of an outstanding passer has a lot more to do with it than Zach being such a problem. We shall see :/

No imo.

Because that means his methods work. It means maybe he altered his methods to where they work in the SEC. So you don't want to erase that by letting him go.

But his methods don't work for every wr. Hes intelligent but he doesn't internalize any game experience.

I was afraid of this while listening to him during his first interviews here.

I get what your saying and that's a interesting point of view if that's true. But I just think we need to move on. UT is at a point where they could probably get some better candidates to apply for the job. I think other teams are using Josh Malone as an example against us. Josh was a prized recruit and so was North. He hasn't had nearly the production that everyone thought. At the time he signed this staff was relatively new to recruits and Tennessee hadn't been a factor in years. Now that we have this lack of production it's being used against us recruiting Tee and other wr talent. Obviously it's all not on Azzanni, we've had drops, bad QB play and,i injuries. But we're being negatively recruited because of this. Just my thoughts but seems like we're ready for a change. Butch got rid of Janceck who wasn't terrible Azzanni is probably next.

Don't get me wrong, if our QBs can't get the ball to the receivers for whatever the reason -- mental, accuracy, whatever -- we'll never get premium WR recruits to sign with our team. While I believe that the O-line needs to give Dobbs more time for things to set up and receivers need to be play makers, there were a lot of passes that were thrown low or behind the receivers.

So I guess all the passes that were dropped by the receivers last year were on Dobbs also.

No, I agree with your sarcasm. Equally frustrating to watch them drop catchable balls. Perhaps they were surprised to see a ball actually thrown to them?

One of my previous posts in this thread stated that the receivers need to be play makers. It ain't all about speed.

Lots of moving parts here. But to refer back to the OP, you can't just have WRs doing wind-sprints during the game while running it up the middle or Dobbs keeping if the routes aren't perfect or the O-line collapses. I think we all agree, it's broke. Hopefully our best minds have a solution worked out this year.

I can't take another year losing to my Gator wife and family. Since I have known her, we have never beaten them.

Speaking of dropped passes, Pennington said on the SportsSource yesterday there were 16 dropped passes for the year. I know,I know, it's Pennington on the SportsSource. I just haven't heard anyone else give a number for dropped passes and was wondering if y'all might have heard of any.

Azzani has underperformed. We have a great staff and he is the weak link. Going after the "ignorance of the fans" is not going to endear him to anyone. Pretty unbelievable actually. Nut up and do your job and make sure the receivers reach their potential before you acxuse millions of people of not understanding the modern game.

You can bet Tennessee receivers coach Zach Azzanni is running his position group exactly like his boss wants. UT head coach Butch Jones was a receiver when he played at Ferris State and has also been a receivers coach during his career.

So when Azzanni took the time to explain what was happening with the Vols receiver rotation at UT’s media day on Saturday, he did it for the sake of the fans who might have been confused by what appeared to be inconsistency at the position.

There’s a reason the Vols are shuffling wideouts on and off the field in their no-huddle attack.

“That seems to be like the biggest point of contention, is rotation, and what it quite frankly sounds like is people don’t understand today’s game,” Azzanni said. “This is not a pro-style huddle game anymore. It’s not.”

Oregon does it just fine

I just want 300 yds passing/400 yds rushing/ 150 yds special teams & turnover returns per game coupled with a defense that holds opponents to 300 total yards or less per game.

If that position group was ran by Butch we would see 100% improvement from the results they had last year. He got more involved with the WR before UGA and boom Dobbs had a 300 yard day. It's no secret that this is the year Z better start getting results with these talented guys or he will be packing his bags just like Jancek. I would be shocked if he's still on the staff if that group performs like it did last year.

Slow pace of play is the main gripe from the euro soccer crowd about football. Maybe at this pace it can take over the world. (Blue font)

Game after game of 1-0, 2-1, and grown axx men rolling around faking hurt and injuries and euro soccerphiles complaining of slow pace and boring?!?!?!? Fuggedaboutit!!

I don't buy "all the passes that were dropped" argument. Occasional drops are part of football, nobody catches everything thrown to them. Until someone can show me legit data that proves that our guys had an excessive amount of drops last year, I ain't buying it.
