You can bet Tennessee receivers coach Zach Azzanni is running his position group exactly like his boss wants. UT head coach Butch Jones was a receiver when he played at Ferris State and has also been a receivers coach during his career.

So when Azzanni took the time to explain what was happening with the Vols receiver rotation at UT’s media day on Saturday, he did it for the sake of the fans who might have been confused by what appeared to be inconsistency at the position.

There’s a reason the Vols are shuffling wideouts on and off the field in their no-huddle attack.

“That seems to be like the biggest point of contention, is rotation, and what it quite frankly sounds like is people don’t understand today’s game,” Azzanni said. “This is not a pro-style huddle game anymore. It’s not.”

Our WRs need to be play makers as well as speedsters. O-line needs to give Dobbs enough time for routes to set up.

It ain't ALL Dobbs.

We have had nothing but injured, young, and under developed receivers for years. We haven't even ever seen this offense open up. Dobbs better step up his middle of the field game. He needs to learn touch. And he needs to become more instinctual. He has been thinking too much and not reacting naturally. All accounts I've read, everything I've seen says this is going to be a very different U.T. team this year.

Middle of the field passes down field has been one of the passes Dobbs throws best. His passes to the sidelines have been the biggest problem with his accuracy.

I can tell you I've seen him rocket throws downfield so hard he could blow a hole in the back of the stadium. Strength isn't a problem. When he FIRST took the field. It was obvious to everyone. The first thing out of anybodies mouth about Dobbs was "he needs to learn touch." The deal is he recognizes it, he sits there and thinks about it, analyzes it, deciphers it, and by the time he lets it go the moment has passed, to a young, injured, under performing receiver. The play has no chance. With his experience this year with recognizing plays, with the training he has done in the off season, with the barn full of over achieving receivers in camp. I see a very different team showing up on the field this year.

Great strategy Zach..... you're catching heat because the production of the position group you specifically coach has been piss poor, damn near embarrassing for 3 years running despite some very talented players. So now, when you're getting much deserved, well-earned criticism, you decide to play the "fans are just stupid" card and just don't understand today's game. Well done buddy.

Also, which is it? On one hand you have to play so many WRs because none of them can possibly go more than 4 plays in a row, even though we typically use 80-90% of the play clock despite not huddling up. On the other hand you make the statement that youll only play 4 WRs if those are the best players to help us win. What?

Basillio* wrote something nice on this. Pretty much said Calvin Ridley didn't catch 80+ passes by coming off the field every 4-5 plays.

I don't think he deserves critiscm yet. Sure, our WR's has dropped passes that should have been caught and yes, Dobbs sometimes doesn't make the necessary throws in order for WR's to make plays but whether you want to believe it or not, our offense is made up around Dobbs, Hurd, & Kamara. We rely heavily on the run game so of course our WR's aren't going to put up "Great Numbers" on the stat sheet. Coach Z can't make the plays for the players, he can only coach them during practice. Once they step on that field, they're on their own. I do think Coach Z is a good coach, I just don't think he fits in Butch's system.

There are plenty of more effective spread teams that don't sub near as much as we do. Players can't get in a groove when they are only on the field 1/3 of the offensive snaps. Focus on your playmakers and rotate as needed.

all I know is the downfield passing game has got to get better or we could be in for a shorter season than expected...:)

GO VOLS!

If he doesn't fit, Butch needs to let him go.

Don't get me wrong, if our QBs can't get the ball to the receivers for whatever the reason -- mental, accuracy, whatever -- we'll never get premium WR recruits to sign with our team. While I believe that the O-line needs to give Dobbs more time for things to set up and receivers need to be play makers, there were a lot of passes that were thrown low or behind the receivers.

Yeah, if CZA knows what's good for him, right Vinnie? 😉

More like "...if we really want to take this thing to the next level."

Obviously it's not news to him. He knows it, Butch knows it, and the team knows it. We know it. Personally, I don't care how the sausage gets made.

I might could understand how a receiver would be winded after running 4 consecutive pass patterns. I don't understand how a receiver could be winded after blocking for 4 consecutive runs. OL are rarely rotated out after blocking. We're a running team at heart. If we were a spread in order to pass most of the time then this rotation theory would be more understandable. Kind of off-topic, but not entirely; we've all noted dropped passes, and we've also noted what appears to be an inordinate number of passes hitting a defenders hands but not being caught. Is it possible there is a correlation? Sincere question here, as I honestly don't know the answer having never played either position and nothing after high school. DuckinVol is only a message board football expert.

Butch has shown he's not afraid to make coaching changes if he feels they are needed. ZA has seen it. It's time to show out of get out.

I have confidence that Butch is making the right personnel adjustments. He's already shown that he is willing to cut ties with his long time buddies to take this team to another level. Shoop was a home run hire. If he thinks that the WR issue is Coach Z, confident he will replace with someone there to take that part of our program to a championship level.
