Away game horror stories

The Swamp is not a problem. I've been there 4 times, never had an issue. The stories you've heard are very much exaggerated.

Just because you've never had an issue doesn't mean someone else hasn't.

It also doesn't mean their story is exaggerated.

05 at the Swamp was a nightmare. ...We were on a winning streak, winning at the Swamp back to back. They wanted it bad and it being Meyers first SEC game the place was nuts. My wife and I were in the UT section, but on the end right next to Gator fans too. This guy and girl were talking trash the whole game.. Game over 16-7 as we were leaving my wife and his thing were talking trash, my wife flipped it the bird and he raised his hand and said "I'll slap the s#!!# out of you b!@$#" so I did what any man would do and put him on his keyster. I get swarmed by secruity and the Gator fans are laughing and saying it was my fault. I get escorted out and told not to come back.

Not to mention the truck loads of rednecks with children in the back calling us hillbillys and flipping us off and spitting at us on our walk to the stadium. I laugh at people that steriotype Tennessee fans as trashy. Dont let the beaches in other citys fool you, Gainseville Florida is the slums of SEC towns i've been to.

'91 Gainesville and it isn't even close.

Been to at least 1 road game vs every school in the SEC except for A&M and Mizzou.

Usually no trouble whatsoever; occasionally you can get some entertaining smack talk going back and forth on the way to the game.

Very rarely you may run across a guy with liquid courage wanting to start something - happened to me in Athens in '04 - 2 of his frat brothers apologized and pulled him away before anything happened.

At the Swamp in '91 it felt like every Gator in and around that stadium wanted to pick a fight with every Vol. inside the stadium - in our seats - some guy in his early 40s drunk and dog-cussing my mom - I had to step in to make it stop. On the way out multiple teenage kids banging on our rental car windows on the way out of the parking lot after the game. Very surreal.

Went back in '07 and it was hostile, but not even close to '91.

I've been to games at 8 of the 12 SEC venues. Have not been to Auburn, Missouri, A&M, or Arkansas.

Never have had a bad experience anywhere. I've had people try to talk smack and bait me into fights but I always ignore them and just keep walking. As long as you can take a little ribbing and occasionally being yelled/cussed at, I see no reason anyone should ever feel unsafe at an away game.

I will say that I never hang out in town after the game, or go to local bars or anything like that. I think a lot of people probably get in trouble at places like that, compared to getting in trouble on campus/ in the stadium.

Very true, people thats been in the last 10 year have been when they didn't view us as a true threat. If you went in the 90's when UT was a title contender or in the early 2000's when we had a mini streak on them (back to back 03/04 and at the Swamp 01/03) You would know how vile they can be.

Mine wasn't exceptional at the swamp but it was the 90s and the alcohol was still a real issue. So much fight baiting, much more than other experiences, it overrode the fun. But some here say their experiences were different, so it may be timing. Or I could accuse them of exaggerating just because they had a different experience.

The worst place I've ever had an experience from fans is actually Neyland. It was not from UT fans though.

I went to the UGA/UT game that went to overtime 2 years ago. I'm a bigger guy, but mild mannered and in my early 30's. I don't talk trash and I don't drink anymore. I can handle ribbing without a problem. Anyway, I was in section II and went to the bathroom about 15 minutes before kickoff.

I walk in and 5 UGA fans (guys probably in their 20's) are threatening and taunting a UT man in his 50's. I ran and got between them and said if they wanted to pick on someone they could pick on me. Luckily and thankfully, they backed off. I'm under no delusions -- 5 guys could beat the hell out of me. But still, their behavior wasn't acceptable.

Stupid ass dawg fans...

I've been to many stadiums (pro and college in the north and south) and that is the only time I've come close to actually having a problem. I'd say you'll be safe in Florida if you can handle ribbing and ignore the inevitable drunk comments from 20 year olds.

Gainesville is a different world. The atmosphere literally changed overnight there once the program began beating it's conference brethren on a regular basis in the early 90's. Honestly, if you ignore the typical trash talking drunks then you'll be fine. Enjoy the game.

Most of my experiences have been pleasant. Although, 2005 in Baton Rouge was memorable for many reasons, good and bad. Most Tiger fans were in disbelief after that one and mostly quiet and talking amongst themselves. However, they were soon outnumbered by those loaded up on booze and corn dogs. Those may have been the ones that almost destroyed the Tennesse team bus.

Never had a problem anywhere.

Avoid drunks. Even in the negative stories I have read in this thread, the song remains the same. An idiot + alcohol = issues. And they screw it up for everybody.

For full disclosure, most every stadium isn't what it once was. There are more wine and cheese folks in the alumni sections than ever before as the cost of tickets has increased. And the students just ain't the same.

Winning did spoil people. When winning was new and beating the snot out of people felt like the release of countless years of frustration, the Swamp was a madhouse. The only cool part of losing is that when the winning happens again, the stadium may get to feel like the stadium of old.

Some of you may feel that way about Neyland. That when some wins happen, people will be revved up in a way they haven't been in years.

Anyway, right now, except when Florida State rolls into town, the Swamp ain't what it used to be. Not sure if it ever will be.....regardless of the win/loss record

Back in the eighties, I went to a road game in Tuscaloosa. As I drove into the parking lot, I heard a loud belch. Looking in the direction from which it came, I saw a portly Bama fan on top of an RV guzzling beer while taking a whiz over the side. I quickly headed to the far end of the lot before she could take aim in my direction.

I've been to numerous away games, and my theory is that 99% of most fan bases are decent. If you get a bad draw and encounter the 1%, you are going to have a bad experience. Otherwise, as long as you aren't a 1%-er yourself and acting the fool, you will enjoy your trip.

I sat in the Florida alumni section in 99, and aside from some good natured ribbing, I enjoyed my visit. But, the mature folks in established careers are rarely the problem. it is usually the overserved and underemployed crowd that can't handle their liquor who cause the problems. They also make one think twice about taking their kids to games-whether the games are at home or away.

I sat in the OU alumni section last year, and met some nice folks there too. The only problem was a drunk Vol fan who finally and rightly got hauled out by Oklahoma's finest.

Me and 5 of my buddies decided a few years ago that we wanted to do an SEC Stadium tour. We have been to Kentucky, Missouri, Vandy, and Mississippi State, and we have everything booked for Florida this year. We have had a great time at every place we have gone to, but I know that Swamp is completely different. All I know is that our seats are in the Tennessee section.

Only advice that I can give is do not cover your vehicle with any Fan Attire when you go to an opposing stadium.

I've seen slashed tires, broken windshield, broken windows all because there were a few flags and orange on their car.

2003 in the swamp. I was there with my Brother in law and my 11 yr old Nephew. Me and the nephew were on our way to the concession stand and an ******* threw a cup of tobacco spit at us. A little bit got on me but it covered my nephews face. I stepped up the stands and the guy stood up to me as I got to him. I hit him in the nose sending him down the steps face forward. His buddy jumped up and I dislocated his jaw. I was then grabbed by security and other fans. They took me to the lower bowels of the swamp and put me in a small concrete block room. The cops asked me if I wanted to press charges and told me the other gentleman would not do so if I didn't. I of course did not and they escorted me to the gates and banned me from the campus and stadium.

Dear Penthouse.................

We were sitting at the top of auburn's stadium when this drunk grown woman is cussing my dad like a dog, he starting getting riled up, and was saying I don't know you lady , I told my dad she had him confused with someone else, he laughed and that was it. Until Clausen threw a game ending int. with about 1:30. left on about their 30 yd line. Right after getting a 1st down. They ran the clock out and then we left.
