Away game: Athens, GA

Athens is my favorite away game experience. Never have had a bad time there, and fans treated us well. The bar scene is great and extremely wild. Also if you plan on drinking it must be in a cup

I always stay at Holiday Inn just off campus so I only tailgate around there. I'm no help here.

Their downtown is neat. a lot of bars. porterhouse is good but make a reservation asap. make reservations. walkins are tough to come by.

I go to more road games than home. Being a road fan is fun. don't take anything personally. I've never had a grown man bark at me.

I've had a florida fan wave a blue dildo at me though. that was weird.

their traditions are pretty cool too. I think you'll have a good time.

Seriously? I went two years ago and it was just about constant. On the whole it was a fun experience but there was definitely barking

Never. I've gone the last three visits too. this'll make four. I also go to every ga vs fl game as I'm in jax.

of all things not one person has questioned the Florida fan with a blue dildo. an indictment on the UF fanbase lol.

My advice about staying away from the Greek houses on Milledge is not an indictment of Athens or UGA fans in general. That just happens to be a very rough stretch to pass by if you're an obvious visitor. I've seen many a grown man get beat down on that street after stepping on the wrong patch of grass to challenge an untoward word or cup of beer that slipped out of someone's hand. The post game vibe is generally a lot more friendly.

As for places to stay in Athens, it seems like most of the hotels book up a good year in advance for the big games. Personally, I'd stay in Atlanta and take a Groome shuttle.

It'd take more than a few to knock me down.

They come in packs of about 150-200. They let a couple of the most drunk ones take your best shot as they're not going to feel it anyway and then they will hit you from all sides.

Lol that's a rather large pack. I feel confident I could take 10-15 but I'd need help after that.

I've been to quite a few games in Athens. I've had some good experiences and some bad.

The worst trip was when I went in 2006. I was going to my seat after going and getting some food when a drunk frat boy told me that if I walked by him one more time that he was going to push me down the stairs and kill me and then throw his hot dog on me. I guess he thought throwing the hot dog on me was the final icing on the cake after he killed me.

With the exception of the beatdown that we gave the Dawgs, that day was just not a good one all around. There were fights that broke out around us. And it was UGA fans fighting other UGA fans. Saw what looked like batteries being thrown at fans. Mix that in with the constant barking in my face and that day was definitely not my favorite.

Of course, I'm slightly biased because I live in Georgia and have come to hate their fan base as much as I do any fan base. Every year they are supposed to win the National Championship and blah, blah, blah....The most delusional fan base around...

If driving to the game, you might want to go pretty early or stay away from 316. The roads are not really conducive for massive crowds.

Restaurants:
Last Resort is awesome! Hard to park but you can walk to it.

You can get a quick bite at the Tate Center right by the stadium.

Mama's Boy - good breakfast and lunch

Bring sun screen because the stadium is not as steep as Neyland, so you get blasted with direct sun. Oh, and they put most visitors up in the 600 corner and you can't hear their crappy sound system at all because it comes out of the "Jumbotron".

I assume you will be showing your colors. Orange? If so, stay the hell away from Milledge Avenue between Broad and Lumpkin. You're better off parking on the East side of campus, somewhere near the river.

Welp, the parking is already booked for me on Milledge. Should be fun.

Going for the first time also! Leaving Friday night to get a little closer and going on in Saturday morning. I'll keep an eye on this post for more info. Looking for recommendations on where to stay after the game. Does not have to be in Athens. Would prob prefer not to be so I don't have to kick any dogs off.

Why not spend Friday night in Atlanta?
It's only 60 miles from Athens.
Go see the Aquarium, world of Coke, or the College Football Hall of Fame (it's awesome for both kids and adults).
I'd invite you to stay at my place Friday night,
But, you might be crazy and/or I might be too.

Athens is a great college town ~358 days a year. On football Saturdays it's miserable. Traffic is a nightmare everywhere and their fans are the surliest in the conference.

I am actually staying in Athens the whole weekend with friends and of course going to the game on Saturday. In regards to bad experiences, I have been to Athens the past few years we have played down there and never had anyone threaten me or my life. I feel like its the 1% of bad GA fans and 1% of bad vols fans that run into one another, which in then causes all heck to break lose. If you go in with an open mind and a smile you should be good.

Best places to eat and drink there in the classic city?

My favorite bars-Magnolias and 9Ds bar. Both are located on the strip.

My favorite places to eat-Raising Canes has the best chicken fingers, KEBA is also good, along with the Varsity.

And one more thing, #beatGeorgia

Fries at the grill on college ave make sure to ask for a side of fetta you will not be disappointed! Or if you want to get away from the crowds a little there is a new place in front of the Lowes on Epps bridge Rd called Teriyaki 101 some of the best wings I've ever had with a side of steak, chicken, and shrimp fried rice reasonably priced and delicious! Also any of the 3 blind pig taverns in town are also great places to grab a good meal.

Yes, but thirty minutes after you eat it....you will clear out a big area..and I'm not talking about your breath....:eek:lol:

The Varsity slogan is:
You don't buy our food, you just rent it!

Athens is a lot different after a loss by the dogs. Been to every other SEC venue except two, a&m and mizzou, and had a great time each place multiple times except Athens. 2 for 2 on bad experiences as car damage one time and fighting for my girls honor the second. Drunken dogs can't fight for squat but they do run in packs. Police officer saw the whole thing and intervened not a moment too soon.

It's not that bad, I've been to every school in the SEC except A&M and Mizz. When you go on the road as a fan a lot depends on your attitude. If your too timid when fans get on you it will steamroll, and they will really pile on. If your take everything as an insult and try to fight everybody your going to end up kicked out, or end up in jail before the game starts. It really can be a predator prey mentality. Try to have some fun, if somebody barks at you yell "Go Vols!". There are sh** fans everywhere, just ingnore them and have fun. I.ve always loved road games, always had more fun, and took pride in representing the Vols.:good!:
