Price said on 104.5 that Warren was making the biggest impact of the new assistant coaches. I love hearing that. He added, "The DB position could go from a liability last season to a strength this season if it continues to come together like it has in the spring."

Also specifically mentioned Warrior and Martin as much improved.

We got talent there but you couldn't tell it with the lack of coaching the last few years.

Martinez was our downfall last year (See Vanderbilt). We have plenty of talent in our back-end with Warrior, Martin, Gaulden, Osborne, Kelly, Abernathy, Buchanan, and even Moseley, it's time we just get something out of them.

while i agree, at some point we have to be able to stop talking about all that talent we have, and we need to SEE it....

Agreed. I think Price was talking tangible results as he sees it. Said out of Wells, Hoke, Scott, Canales, Warren (all new at UT in their current role) that Warren's group had improved the most.

Edit: And he wasn't saying the others were slouches. Specifically mentioned the intensity of Wells and Hoke.

Martinez has been all over the place coaching, usually a bad sign. Think he ended up at some DII or DIII school in WV. Guess everyone finally figured it out!

All I know is if I see one of our DB's start tracking the ball and turn his head during the GA Tech game I may fall over!

Excited to hear that Warren has been making a good first impression. We have an abundance of athletes, I would like to see deep rotations at CB, NB and S to always have fresh legs on the field.

Buchanan, Abernathy, Martin, Kelly Jr, Warrior, Mosley, Berry, Gaulden, Osborne and a few others... Plenty of talent for situational subs on 3rd and long, inside the 20, sets with 2 tight ends, spying a mobile QB, etc, etc.

No excuse to never have a set of fresh legs on the field in our secondary.

I don't think the lack of fresh legs has been the problem at cb the last few years. We had no one besides Sutton who consistently put them selves in a position to make a play on the ball. I'm not sure if it was technique or the fact that we didn't have very good players at the position. Hopefully Martin turns into the all sec caliber talent that he was billed as when he came in, and maybe warren can coach up buchannon and Osborne this year so we don't see Mosley in the game too much.

Or maybe Warren coaches up all of them including Mosley. Mosley has talent too and with competent coaching He may give us a lot of good minutes..

One of the great things about playing DB is if you have your head around and playing the ball, you can literally stick a shoulder in a guy and run him right out of bounds. As a DB that line is your friend, our guys just never had good technique on the corners especially.

I don't think it's a question of talent, I think it's been 2 things mostly.

1. Haven't seen much progression year over year outside of maybe Abernathy. Sutton was great for 3 years, but our DB's really didn't take the same steps forward as other positions have in recent year. The talent was there, the progress and growth really hasn't been.

2. Scheme/positioning. I would like to see our guys playing more physical at the line of scrimmage and I would like to see less corner blitzes. Additionally, our guys have CONSTANTLY had their backs turned to the ball on deep coverage, even if they've been stride-for-stride with the receiver. This is an automatic PI flag. Foreman was the worst at this, but he's gone now. Mosley has struggled with this as well. TKjr has at times been caught playing too close to the line of scrimmage and being out of position on medium/deep routes. Evan Berry is an amazing athlete but he's also been out of position on a lot of plays. I think he should primarily be in the game on 3rd and long as a FS playing centerfield.

I was hoping we would hear this from the players. The coaching had to improve, it could not have been worse. You see less talented team play much better in the secondary than we have. They had better coaches. We should become a better than average secondary based on the talent we have.

The same goes for the Oline. I expect us to be much better on first down runs even with the D knowing we are running. No more being stuffed by Appy st. I don't think Mahoney was as bad as Martinez but the Oline play has not matched the talent.

I feel for these players being run down when they needed coaching.

Martin has looked like an All SEC corner in both scrimmages. His one on one with Juan was fun. Corner position stars with confidence and knowing even when you do get beat on a play you make the next one. He has that now. Coach Warren is doing a wonderful job. But just a warning there will be times when a player does not turn his head back but will play the receiver eyes and make a play then. Happens all over College and Pro Football. It always depends in what position they are in at the time.

Who was it that turned and looked against Ga and gave up the lated TD?

There's more to playing DB than looking for the ball.

Our defense is designed to be aggressive, when a DB sits on a route and guesses wrong, that's when the DB has to get in scramble mode.

When the Dline doesn't get to the QB in a timely manner(like the Ga late TD), it puts undue pressure on the DBs.

We need to play complimentary football, not just offense, defense and special team, but Dline, LBs, and DBs too. All it takes is 1 out of 11 not doing their job and the whole team pays the price.

Yep, it was frustrating watching our secondary face guard game in game out. The refs flagged it numerous times and it extended drives that led to TDs.
