Austin Nichols to leave memphis

Where ever he goes I wish him luck.

Yeah me too. Just my gut, but with all the early drama I either see him signing quick fast with UVA or looking at afew places and testing the water.

Whether he pulls Nichols or not Tony Bennett is getting scary. Imo dude can coach and now he is attracting really good talent. He was also in the final group of the NJ kid that just committed to the Cuse.

I saw Mark Pancratz make a good point, as soon as Bo Ryan announced he was retiring after he upcoming season many around CBB said Tony Bennett would be the guy they would love to have, and will make him say no. Will that possibly play into Nichols' decision?

UW will most likely be hiring internally, I'd guess. Gard has worked with Ryan for like 20 years, and is always all over those "top 10 asst. coach" lists put out by different news outlets. UW may already have their man.

Barnes left this scholarship spot open. Let's see if Nichols will fill it. Will be a preliminary test of A) does Nichols feel a real connection to UT and right the wrong and B) Can Barnes beat out UK, Duke and UVA for the kid. Where ever he goes I wish him luck.

I wouldn't think the outcome of this would tell us anything about Barnes ability to beat the big boys out for a recruit

Most of the time in these situations a kids decision is made up before the release is ask for

All I'm saying is that there is a glimpse into maybe what he can do. If he gets Nichols then I'll be much more impressed.

If he does not doubt it will be impressive but if he doesn't I don't think it should be frowned upon. Only a win win here IMO since I think most kids already know where they are going before the public knows a transfer is coming

Exactly. He needs to take full advantage of this. It's a win- win for him

That is very possible, and that is who Ryan endorsed the day he announced, but there were many around the game who said they expect Wisconsin to at least make a run at Bennett. You have to imagine he's thought of as much more of a sure thing than a life long assistant coach, those guys don't always work out.

Do you really think that UVa would just let him walk? He's got a lot going for him there and I just don't see Wisconsin being able to hire him away.

FWIW, before Ryan made his announcement, Virginia and Tony Bennett re-worked his contract (signed after the 2014 season). His annual compensation, not including some performance bonuses) is $2.1 mil, with, I think, 5% annual bumps, and a $3 mil buy-out if he leaves before 2018. Speculation was that the buy-out was to reassure recruits that he wouldn't be leaving in the immediate future. Evidently, he doesn't want any negative recruiting over that issue. The thinking du jour in Charlottesville is that if Bennett leaves UVa for another coaching job it will be in the NBA.

If we've learned anything about contracts with NCAA coaches (especially buyouts) they mean basically nothing if a school really wants that coach...they see it as an investment and bargaining isn't out of the picture as well...(see Florida and Colorado State)

I didn't say UVA would just let him walk, but if he wants to coach Wisconsin there's not much they can do, see Shaka & Texas.

Tony Bennett is from Wisconsin, played his high school and college ball in Wisconsin, his father coached Wisconsin prior to Bo Ryan, and that is where he got his coaching start was as an assistant coach at Wisconsin...there are a ton of ties, and most around CBB say if he was going to leave UVA it Wisconsin is one of the few schools that could lure him away.

That would be an absolute home run for Wisconsin. I wish Duke would do that instead of promoting from within like everyone expects

Guy on VQ who is pretty well known and has both Tennessee program and Memphis area connections is saying he's leaning towards joining his sister at Tennessee fwiw

I'll be floored if he doesn't end up at Virginia, but if he does come here, we will have not only landed a legit guy but stuck it in deep to Memphis. Christmas in July.

That would be huge. Build for 2016 and 2017. Get some good recruits to accent our current players

Was gonna post this too, saw someone post it the other day and it obviously makes sense, "if he was going to Duke, or Marquette, or Kansas etc. his family would not have hired a lawyer"...that obviously suggests Virginia and Tennessee, with most acknowledging Virginia is the early favorite.

The thought is he's not going to Duke because it is likely Giles will commit there, and he doesn't want to be recruited over. I'll be surprised if it isn't Virginia. He favored UT for a while coming out of high school, but I just don't see it happening now. Too much uncertainty within the program now, and he's only got two years left.

Giles is thought of as a one and done, with Nichols having to sit a year out that doesn't really effect him, but yes Duke does have some quality front court depth besides Giles.

As for uncertainty, there's also uncertainty with the Virginia/Wisconsin situation, unless Nichols' family is gonna get some sort of binding agreement in writing for Bennett, other coaches will definitely be making Nichols' aware of the fact Bennett is considered an option for the Wisconsin job.

Also, if you simply want to argue who gives him the best chance of getting into the league which clearly is his families top priority, Barnes & Tennessee can make a better case than Bennett & UVA, and I don't think that's really even debatable.

Let me be clear, I'm not saying he's coming to Tennessee, I'm just passing along what is being said and making a case for the Vols.

Why? He's an elite player, he really pretty much has his pick of schools.

A little late...but interesting because I didn't think UK would show much interest in any more players, especially transfers for this year. Not sure of our scholly count, but obviously I guess we have room. Can't hurt to to have a player stocked up for the season after either.
