Figured I’d post only one update today. Honestly, there’s no real use in detailing into how certain guys look in shorts. I do have a lot notes from stuff I’ve gather over the summer. I wanted to do this before camp started but never had time.

Session 1

Bullard was running C with the 1st team offense. No surprise there. One of the biggest priorities for the coaches in camp is seeing if Bullard is capable at C with Stone sliding over to LG. The coaches will decide fairely early into camp if this gives them a better line then Stone at C and either Schofield or jackson at LG. On that note, Schoefield was running 1st team at LG today. Also, Bullard ran LT with the 2nd team today.

Darr is struggling with consistency punting. He’ll have a few good (not great) kicks in a row and shank one real bad. He’s got a very talented leg, just needs some more coaching and work with mechanics. He also dealt with a quad injury in spring practice which has hampered him. (Can’t remember if I mentioned that then or if it was even reported by the media.)

Bray, Hunter and Da;Rick all have looked very good thru 2 days. (as good as they could be in shorts.) The time spent over the summer is definitely showing as is the new dedicated approach the three, especially Da’Rick have taken.

Don’t look too much into Hunter getting reps at PR. He did it in the spring too. He’s NOT going to be back there this fall. A freshman, either of the RBs or WRs will be there. The hope was for Young too but his recent re0injury has hampered that.

Also on the WRs, don’t sleep on Zach Rogers. I know the freshmen are more talented and have been in the news, but if White Lightnin’ can finally stay healthy for an entire camp and season, he’ll be a solid contributor. Go back and look at his stats the four games last year he started while Jones was injured: 10 catches for 176 yds an a TD. Over 12 games that’d be 40 catches for 704 yds. Just sayin…

I know there’s been some talk of Couch coming in and starting over Hood but that’s not going to happen. Couch plays the 3 technique where Hood is the teams only true nose. Hood WILL start this fall, more because there’s nobody really pushing him, but he has had a good summer. Coaches are wondering what kind of production he’d have if he had been on defense the past two years…

One player I will make an exception for in shorts is Janzen. Watching him to the drills is basically all the other DBs and then Janzen. It’s almost like he’s doing a completely different drill with out effortless he looks. He’s got more natural talent then Berry (by a good margin) but isn’t even comparable in the mental makeup which also translates off the field as well.

Session 2

Couch had a hard time getting through practice again tonight. I believe he even took a few drills off tonight and was with the trainers. Seems like his conditioning needs improvement. In his defense, he was never asked to do these types of intense drills in JC. Coaches feared this could be an issue.

Moore and Coleman are by far the two best CBs out of the newcomers. Lanier has the talent but seems a step slow. Isn’t in the best of shape, IMO.

I know I mentioned Saulsberry yesterday as a guy who stand out physically but I didn’t mention he’s playing DE. A bit of a surprise their but he’s got the chance to get a good player along with his hs teammate Williams whose running at DE on the other side.

I was a bit skeptical about Clear being a TE but he’s been impressive. Obviously he’s got the bulk for TE but he’s got deceptive athleticism and good hands.

It hit me when I saw Maggitt, Harris and AJ running with the 1st team during the night session at LB with Sirmon coaching them. We’re going to be very good across the board in 2-3 years. SEC title good. Maggitt and Johnson have been working at OLB (Maggitt at weakside and Johnson at strongside). Both guys are extremely impressive athletically and will contribute this year. Maggitt reminds me of Raynoch Thompson a lot.

Finally, don’t want to say too much about Lane but simply put he’s special. Coaches knew this when they got him and are actually a little upset he’s getting a lot of attention from the media nad on message boards. He’s going to play a huge role this year and they didn’t want his name to be out there this much till he had his “my God a freshman” moment against Florida or LSU. I doubt he ever officially “starts” over Poole, but he’s going to win us some games over the next three years (if he stays healthy.)

Sounds about like my golf game.

Glad to hear the new LB's are looking good. Hopefully they keep improving. If we manage to recruit some big uglies on the line this year, sounds like our front seven will be much improved in 2012 and a force to be reckoned with in 2013.

Been waiting all day for this. Thanks, Zas!

Also, if Hood is our only returning nose, does that mean Allan Carson might get some playing time just out of necessity? I know a lot of people had been thinking redshirt.

Funny. Where's mhf? He called me a dumbass the other night because I said couch wouldn't be starting yet and has to beat out hood. He's far behind.

I'm sure Couch will be a bit of a disappointment to the coaches, unless he improves. I for one was hoping he'd be the best DT on the team--clearly that's not gonna happen.

Thanks for the info!

I'm more worried about our punting and kicking situation instead of our LBs!

Great in depth post Z. I get home from work, and look forward to your post! Thanks for all the great info and analysis. Can't wait to hear your update and analysis after the team puts on pads.

I think Couch will be a 10-15 snap contributor early this year. He needs to come in and give some relief to Malik and Hood. Down the stretch, he may see more snaps. Miller will really help in the rotation, too. I'd be surprised if Carson plays this year, but he will surprise a few people in the years to come.

I'd say he's watching TV and noting anything lewd so he can alert the FCC.

Maggitt reminds you of Raynoch? That could quite possibly be the best news of the summer.

Agree on Couch, Malik actually said the same during SEC media days. Hopefully he will be more solid when we get to the season. At same time, I really hope Hood is playing well and not just winning because everyone else sucks.

Trying not to get too excited about Lane yet. When they play in pads, then will get a little more excited. I am hoping this year, Poole and Neal carry the load with Lane handling punts, KOs and 3rd team RB. Next year compete for first team with Neal. In other words, I really hope Neal has improved.

Somewhat agree about Janzen. I think he is more naturally talented, but not by a long ways. I also believe Berry is much more of a pro. Janzen can make millions next year or end up in prison. I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Anyway, am getting excited about the O this year. Looks like they put in the time this summer. Finally seems to have the talent on O this year to compete. Possibly look a lot like last years Arky team. With 6 definite wins on the sched, we can easily go 8-4 this year or higher.
