August 13th Practice Update.

With today being Friday the 13th no freak accidents occurred.

John Brown was absent from practice today. The team and all of Volnation should hear about his fate sometime this afternoon.

Janzen Jackson didn't hit today but he was conditioning on the side while the team practice. He won't play in tomorrows scrimmage but he should be ready to go when Monday rolls around.

Nigel Thorton participated in practice today so that is a good sign.

Ben Bartholomew was wearing a walking boot on his right foot. I am not sure what the injury is or when is occurred.

Greg King appeared to be walking better than yesterday. The bone bruise doesn't seem like it is too bad but I think they are going to give him a MRI just to be safe.

Freshman quarterback Tyler Bray sprained his left ankle very early in practice but he seemed like it didn't hurt as bad the further practice went along.

Cornerbacks Eric Gordon and Knoxville native Anthony Anderson were the starting gunners on special teams.

Reveiz is starting middle linebacker with Herman Lathers and LaMarcus Thompson playing on the outsides.

Converted reciever Marsalis Teague rotated in and out with Art Evans as the starting corner. Teague received quite a bit of the starting snaps.

Waggner and Brewer were the starting safties without Jackson playing. They didn't perform too well today. UT will need Jackson to be healthy.

Anthony Anderson and Stephaun Raines ran with the 2nd team corners while Tyler Wolf and Rod Wilks at the safties.

Sophomore running back Davis Oku continues to impress the staff. He seems like he is having the best fall camp out of the whole team. Oku is very vocal and passionate about the game. He is becoming one of the leaders of this team. David appears to be more mature physically and mentally since he was last seen in the spring.

Scouts from the Bears and Redskins were present at practice.

21 days till its football time in Tennessee!

As far as JJ goes-- I thought I read or heard something about him having just a minor hammy strain, according to CDD. I just hope they don't push his return to quickly. If you don't give a hammy enough time to heal, it'll linger. But I'm sure the staff already knows that.

I like that CDD's putting Evans on ST. He's a starting CB, but it goes to show Dooley's commitment to strong ST play. He's sticking to his guns on that.

Teague was a productive player at WR last year, and if he could be that productive at CB this year, I'll be a happy camper.

And it's great to hear Oku stepping up and becoming a leader. He'll still be answering to upperclassmen Stoker, Reveiz, and Walker, but it's great that he's taking their lead, and that he'll be able to apply that leadership after they're gone.

Small injuries are a fact of life in summer camps, and I don't think they'll be a big factor coming into the season (and trust me- I'm talking minor bruises and strains, not ACL tears). Overall, I like how the team is shaping up, and I think things will only get better from here.

john brown is history , he would have been at practice if all was good !! :cray:

That is not necessarily the case.

When Brown was present on the field yesterday, Dooley had to make sure that it was understood that he was physically there, but not at practice, which would have been an infraction. Dooley had to repeat that denial several times.

It could very well be that Dooley decided that to be safe from accusations of Brown practicing with the team, it would be best for him to not be there at all.

if he cant learn what is considered a very simple defense, then he is screwed. how hard could it be?

Seriously. Since when is OLB a cerebral position? It's a shame because he has NFL-level athleticism and size.

I'm hoping that he will be one of the guys that clicks after a couple of years in the program. Maybe Wilcox/Thompson will see the talent in him and be able to bring it out. We can't afford to have elite recruits on the roster who do not contribute but we are lucky that we don't particularly need Askew this year.

Practicing with the walk-ons is a troubling sign, though.

I'm a day late but thanks for the updates. I like to hear that about Oku. I think he will be exciting to watch.
