Auburn hires Bruce Pearl

Yeah, even if I give you all that. Is Auburn not the shadiest place in America? Bear Bryant taught the state of Alabama 2 things. 1. How to drink and 2. How to cheat. It's rubbed off quite a bit onto the 'smart' school in the state.

p.s. in response to the guy who said bruce cheated the entire time he was at UT

This is an interesting hire. Pearl is getting a pretty good shot at rebuilding another SEC bball program. Congrats to him. If he succeeds and/or fails remains to be seen.

People saying Auburn will be in the NCAA next year are just delusional. Auburn has maybe one or two decent players.

Auburn may well not make the tourney next year, but it won't be because of coaching.

I'm a UT fan, but my 2nd favorite SEC bball team just switched from FL to Auburn.

Go VOLS!

For all those thinking Auburn is suddenly going to become a basketball force in the SEC, ask yourself this question; can Pearl win without cheating? He cheated abundantly while at UT, and yes, that led to some success, although it didn't lead to any championships of note, unless the 2008 regular season SEC gets you all excited. One has to presume since he was fired in disgrace for cheating/lying that he'll clean up his act at Auburn and not lie/cheat. I'm not sure he can win without the shadiness.

No offense, but what coach doesn't cheat? Usually the ones that get caught are much better at hiding it. IMO, Pearl will be a force at Auburn. They are on the same level as Georgia IMO (Great location for recruiting but just needs the right coach).

ABUNDANTLY?...I don't think the word means what you think it does.

He let a kid come to his barbecue and he lied about it. Let's not blow this anymore out of proportion than it already was.

Show me proof that he cheated "abundantly".

Have you been under a rock since 2008? Were you around when he was fired? Were you around when the NCAA body-slammed him? Here's your proof and this is only what we know about, and only what he was caught doing:

In the summer of 2008, Pearl invited high school junior Aaron Craft and members of his family to a cookout at his Knoxville home while Craft was on an unofficial visit to Tennessee. At the cookout, Pearl said that Craft wasn't allowed to be there under NCAA rules, but encouraged all those in attendance not to tell anyone about it. When the NCAA began an investigation of the affair, Pearl not only lied about the cookout, but also told Craft's father to lie as well.[9]

On September 10, 2010, Pearl acknowledged the violations in the Craft affair, and also admitted lying about it to the NCAA. As a result, Tennessee imposed sanctions on Pearl and his entire staff including $1.5 million in salary reduction over the coming five years and a delayed retention bonus. His off-campus recruiting was also restricted completely from September 4, 2010 to September 23, 2011.[10] On November 20, 2010, the SEC ordered Pearl to sit out Tennessee's first eight SEC games.[11]

After finding out about additional NCAA violations, as well as a violation of the school's substance abuse policy by a player, Tennessee fired Pearl on March 21, 2011--three days after the Vols' blowout loss to Michigan.[12][13][14] On August 23, 2011, Pearl was given a three-year show-cause penalty for lying to the NCAA, effective until August 23, 2014. This means that the sanctions imposed on Pearl will remain in force if he is hired by an NCAA member school within that period. Specifically, he is prohibited from engaging in any "recruiting activities", which means he cannot contact recruits, although he may evaluate talent during that period. If a school does choose to hire him and chooses to challenge the NCAA restrictions, it must appear before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and "show cause" for why the sanctions imposed on Pearl should not follow him to that school.[9] In imposing the penalty, the NCAA said that Pearl's lies turned what would have been a minor case into a major one.[15] His assistant coaches were also given one-year show-cause orders, in effect until August 23, 2012.

Unlike many of the debates on here, this one will be settled because we're not talking hypotheticals any more. A few questions that will be answered:

Will Bruce be able to recruit? Many have said parents won't let him in their living rooms.

Will the NCAA camp out on the Plains waiting for Bruce to slip up? Many have suggested whomever hires him will be on probation within a year or two.

Will he be able to win at Auburn? Many have suggested that no one can win at Auburn and it's a wasteland for coaches.

Can Bruce win anywhere? Some of said he's washed up.

Can Bruce assemble a staff? Some have suggested he's lost so much respect in the coaching community that no quality coaches will want to work for him.

The next couple of years will be nothing if not interesting.

Go Big Orange

No any fan could see we had talent just a terrible coach. He might turn it around quickly there like he did here but Auburn shouldn't hold their breath until he gets good players.

Sure, I am sure fans were talking about how great the players were but only the coach was terrible. Auburn will beat UT next season and will be in tourney. And I will laugh my ass off when Pearl kicks Cuonzo's ass

Yes he was.

Chris Lofton shot 47% from 3 in Buzz's last year and his true shooting percentage was north of 65%. He had the 7th highest offensive efficiency of any player in the nation that year.

If he was unknown it was only to those who weren't paying attention.

Good. Now BBB will disappear.

Disappear? If you call winning 20+ gms per year, making noise in the SEC tourney and making the NCAA tourney on a consistent basis, I guess he'll just vanish before our very eyes. I doubt Auburn and Bruce disappear whenever they play UT now. What has been an automatic W or 2 for UT whenever we play Auburn..... that's what just disappeared IMO.

I don't know that he'll recruit that we'll to auburn. He didn't really light the world on fire recruiting here. His talent evaluations are questionable, but he's good at using what he has. I think he'll do well. But I doubt auburn every really competes for SEC titles while he's there.
