Attrition in hindsight

Speaking of Riley, when did he end up at Memphis? I haven't kept up with him, but I thought he was transferring to Charlotte?

Just signed with them on NSD. Played at Coffeyville Comm College last year and did well.

Haven't heard anyone mention Riley lol jk...you would have thought the sky was falling when he left.

That was kinda comical. Not that he transferred. But his QB fanboys were arguing his attributes right up until the announcement. Then it all went instantly silent. :eek:lol:

Hendrix
Helm
Wharton
Jenkins
Brown
Carr
Ferguson
Carter
Miller
Scott
Payne
Sawyers
Henderson

Only a couple have a chance to pan out. But at the time, it was the worst thing ever. This should be remembered by every knee jerk weak fan that comes to VN.

Oh yeah. Forgot @ those 4. Was looking forward to them being productive too.

Of the guys who have recently left the program, I wished we had Helm here. I expect him to thrive with Cutcliffe at Duke. We have lots of bodies however zero proven ability behind Wolfe.

Thought Alex Ellis played well and was a better blocker than Helm thought Wolfe > Helm. Not sure if much of impact this last year since we did not go to the TE much anyway...but Helm could have helped this year (16/17). Creamer , Pope and maybe Croom and younger Wolfe take up any slack.

Yeah, it's a crazy deal, kids jumping all over the place. I know here in Middle Tennessee that a lot of kids from the Murfreesboro area tend to wind up at a Nashville private school (CPA, Ensworth, BWood Academy for example).

As far as Vic, I'm not sure why he left Knoxville after his freshman year to go to CPA, could've been because his dad got a coaching gig there....but I know he was forced to leave CPA and then wound up at Independence. Really not trying to bash Vic, but I've heard from several reliable sources that he's perhaps not the highest character guy you'll ever meet. Even saw a couple of instances of that personally on the basketball court during his junior year. A lot potentially at play to help explain why he left Tennessee, which surely seemed to be his dream school, after just one season.

He followed his father Vic SR from Knox Cath to CPA* then to Independence.

*Apparently he found an ipod and chose to keep it not turn it in. He made amends and but for CPA students who would harass Wharton during games it blew over pretty quick

Some may not know but Wharton first met Jones while HC for Cincy and apparently was close to committing during his Miami of Ohio gm visit then Jones took the Tennessee job and the rest as they say is history

Thinking back to Sawyers and some of the others who left, it reminded me of the TE who was arrested for theft, Cameron Clear. And of course, the others arrested in the service station incident. Can't remember the names exactly, but Jensen Jackson comes to mind. The current players represent a significant step up in character and conduct. UT has also improved the education and mentoring initiatives for these young men.

Nukese Richardson was there too

Why would anybody mention a player who left the program nearly two years ago? He was a talented kid who didn't have the emotional maturity to be QB at a major D1 program like UT at the time. As Crash Davis said in Bull Durham, "million dollar arm, and five cent head".

That being said, I don't really see anybody mentioning guys like Hendrix, Helm, Wharton and Scott either. They, like Ferguson, all chose to leave the program....good riddance, no need to speak of them.

Kid was talented, was getting every opportunity in Spring practice to try and win the job because he threw the ball better than every other QB on the roster. He couldn't handle it emotionally, wasn't mature enough to stay and compete. Good riddance. He was no longer on the team....why wouldn't it all go "instantly silent"?

I was just thinking about all the "sky is falling" threads about attrition the past couple years. I personally have only followed the guys that transfered here to UTC (where they actually got less PT than they did at UT). Anyone know how some of the others have done? I know a lot from the last batch are still sitting out, but most of the treads were focusing on the "trend" over the past few years.

I am gonna scour the interwebs later to get what i can and maybe we can complie some numbers to see how many we "lost"..

speaking of attrition. foresight on attrition needed for 2017.

they fully intend to sign at least 25 players. To get to 25 in the next class, 13 underclassmen will have to leave. If they sign more then more will have to leave.

Survival of the fittest......has worked well for Bama.

I would agree that Helm was probably the biggest loss for the last couple of classes. I think he'll do pretty well at Duke. Hendrix could also be a pretty good player for Pitt.

Some guys commit for the wrong reasons, or just straight up don't want to put up in the effort it takes to succeed at an SEC level. It happens at every school. I don't hold any grudges and wish them best of luck.

With all due respect...we should have won several more games anyways. Helm wasn't the reason we lost.

Oh, I agree. But like I said, Helm and Wolf in a two TE set, especially in the red zone, would have been a powerful option. And once the game is lost, guys like me are thinking of those absent pieces. Especially those who left without causing trouble or being arrested, cutting class, or did not contribute. In the cases of Helm and Wharton, I have heard nothing that said they were problems.

Hate that we lost all of those close games, but the positive from it is that it serves as a learning experience. Players will be determined to NOT lose games; especially, letting a close one slip away from them.

Close ones? Heck, how about the 2 TD lead ones in the 4th quarter.

I agree on Helm being the biggest loss although based on our current roster Wharton is probably 2nd biggest IMO. Hendrix may prove to be a better college player than Wharton, but our DE rotation is the best I've ever seen at UT and I don't think Hendrix would have made it in the top 4.
