attractiveness of UT

I see all these coaches being thrown out on people's wishlist for a new coach, but how attractive is UT for coaches really?

i believe it is a very attractive job because of how much fan support we have and that we sell out just about every game.. the bball team is now in the ranks with the best, but Football has always been the number one priority in Knoxville and it would be a dream job for any coach in the country except maybe UM and Pete Carrol, but for all the other younger coaches out there this would be a dream job... even Coach Pearl said that UT was a dream job and there really wasnt that much fan support for bball before he got here.. i kno it sucks right now for our football program, but everyone should just have patience because sooner or later Mike Hamilton will get the right guy to lead us and its gonna be Football Time in Tennessee again!

i'd say it's no less attractive than Mich, ND, FL etc...

what we have going for us:

national recognition
National recruiting
Neyland Stadium
fanbase/atmosphere
track record for keeping coaches for long term (2 coaches in the last 25+ years)
great facilities
tradition
the cupboard wont' be bare for who ever would come in here, so the right guy could win immediately.
we have big time money
we play in the SEC, the marquee league in the nation.

there are plenty of others im sure, but those are the ones that jump out at me off the bat.

FL, GA and LSU are all better than us right now
we do have to recruit nationally, no in state talent base to speak of
we want to win NOW, so while the track record says different, i think it's safe to say the fan base's patience has worn thin.
while there is talent here, it is a bit of a rebuilding project if nothing else from a depth standpoint.

but all in all, you get the right guy, i'd have to think that the positives outweigh any negatives.

It's very attractive. Lots of money, great facilities, tradition. And there is plenty of other reasons. It's a very high profile job.

Talent pool in tennessee isn't deep but there is a few diamonds every year.

agreed, but i guess my point waw the hand that would be dealt to any new guy would be far greater than what Sly Croom or Ed Oregeron were handed when they took over at their respective SEC programs.

would it be as attractive as what Urban Meyer walked in to? no.

but it's probably still above what Nick Saban walked in to when he signed the dotted line at Bama.

Plus, you can be an immediate hero....endearing yourself to this fanbase.

as many times as i've gone back and forth on this argument of coaching changes, the opportunity exists for a potential new hire to do to this fan base what Jim Tressell has done for OSU.

Money, recognition, rabid fanbase, talent on the roster and superb facilities. Also the fact that UT has had 2 coaches in 25+ years. Stability is there.

Yep, the job is attractive.

Well it needs to be a well thought out hire.Hiring the wrong guy could set us back the better part of a decade.But i'am willing to do that as is most of us.There is always the alternative keep phil so we can all keep our typing skills sharp!:)

Whoever coaches at Ohio State has the easiest recruiting job in the history of the world. John Cooper alienated himself from a lot of fans in the state because he refused to recruit in-state. The fact that Lloyd Carr and Gary Moeller scooped up all those Ohio boys and thumped Ohio State with them simply contributed to Cooper's demise.

Ohio State is one of a very small number of schools that is universally supported in-state (Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State, and LSU come to mind as well). The advantage that Ohio State has is that the quality of high school players from in-state is simply staggering and really doesn't require going out of state.

Damnit I just want to get that feeling again the feeling you get when your favorite team win the National Championship. :(

It was slightly more complex than that. The two most visible things were losing to Michigan routinely (who had a ton of Ohio players) and losing twice to South Carolina (who had Ohioan Ryan Brewer).

Michigan's pretty bad this year, and they have only seven Ohioans on it. I believe that's the lowest number since sometime in the 1940s.

OK...this is where I have to question my VOL bretheren...If Im a coach somewhere and UT offers me a job, and I look and see the fans raising heck on a coach that has won 75% of the games hes coached. Im just not sure a coach would see that as "support". :popcorn:

2 coaches in 25+ years. 8 years since an SEC title. I'd say we are a patient bunch

Fulmer has only won 66% of his games over the last half decade. Any coach who wouldn't understand that that's unacceptable at Tennessee isn't somebody in whom we should be interested anyway.
