People have mentioned that Pearl may leave down the road due to not filling up the seats.

We finished 3rd in the nation with an average of 19,658 per home game.

We were 1st in the nation with an average of 34,336 for men's and women's games combined.

Not bad for a football school.

Where did you find these stats? If Bruce leaves it won't be because of a lack of fans, it'll be because someone offers him the farm.

The formula is simple:

Fun, fast-paced style of play + Big wins + Great PR = Ticket Sales

I've heard nothing but positive reports about attendance. As a matter of fact, I'd would guess the increase has covered his salary pretty easy, along with concessions, etc., especially.

I feel he won't leave until the job is finished; even if someone does offer him the farm. I think he likes the idea of taking a team like UT that has bottomed out and building it up to a contender. He's that much like Spurrier that he has an ego. UT is not that bad of a job, because of the instate recruits. Just ask Memphis UK, Fla., UNC, Miss. ST. It's a better state for basketball talent than football.

The Negative comments came from this board.

When it comes to keeping Pearl, the only thing I'm a little worried about is how well he'll be able to recruit. While I can't see us being outbid to keep him, I can maybe see him leaving to go someplace he can consistently get better players.

But he certainly isn't behaving like a Nick Saban type who's looking for the next job, is he?

Yeah, he's already having trouble getting talented players to come to a big SEC school like UT.

You're probably right, and maybe the last couple of decades of UT basketball have just conditioned me to be reflexively too negative, even now. You've just got to figure that there are a lot of places in the country where it would be at least a lot EASIER to consistently recruit championship-quality players than beauteous East Tennessee.

I'm actually pretty optimistic that Pearl is going to be around for the long haul. For a Boston guy, he really seems to be embracing Tennessee and putting down some roots in Knoxville.

(Let's just hope that the BC job doesn't open up.)

I think Knoxville beats Lawrence, KS as a destination. They seem to have some pretty good players on that roster.

Boston is a great city to live in...and, other than the winter weather, very few can compare to it.

But BC doesn't offer the same fan support and commitment to excellence that UT has. It's an attractive location to live, but the 2 jobs aren't even comparable...Now, if the Celtics wanted him, who knows?

Good point. If he can get the program to a certain level, then bringing guys in becomes much easier. And for the first time in a long, long time, it's not ridiculous to imagine UT with that kind of a program.

Heady times to think of the program Pearl could be building in Knoxville, isn't it?

I mentioned BC because it's his alma mater. You've always got to assume a man would be tempted by that.

I'm aware of his ties to the program...I just don't think that job has enough positives to lure him away from Knoxville (sort of the same way that I don't think the Providence job offers enough to lure Billy Donovan away from Florida).

From January to March, Bruce Pearl's basketball team is on center stage in east Tennessee...In Boston, college athletics get lost behind the Sox, the Patriots, and the Bruins (and they even love their Celtics)...Not even Bruce Pearl could turn that into a college town, and I think he understands that.
