Attack Amerson early and often

So out of curiosity, how do you think you guys will play our WRs? Historically, how has Amerson fared against tall speedy receivers?

Hunter will get pressed at the line. How they play CP will be interesting. I imagine they will shadow him a bit in the beginning to see where his head is at-plus, if he makes a mistake on a route and they have a safety shadowing him it could result in an easy pick...but this leads all roads back to Rivera. If they do this the middle should be wide open, and crossing routes for the slot receiver. I wonder if Chaney has some gadgets up his sleeve in terms of putting Neal in the slot a few times and get him in space. That could be deadly....ok, now I'm getting excited for this offense, Rogers or not.

I thought NCSU never plays press? Aren't they always off the WR's playing zone?

I just think they will test him due to the injury, his weight, etc.

They never play press coverage. It goes against the underlying philosophy of their defense. They play alot of 3-deep zone and have fast DBs with alot of range that they use to set edges and funnel WRs where they want them to go. They also bring lots of exotic blitzes from the LBs to create confusion and force the QB to make mistakes. Hence, the high number of INTs they had last year.

They key is our OLine. Yes, NCST has a very good secondary, but they are very beatable if the LBs aren't creating pressure.

Which is why I think screens, draws and swing passes will be very effective with Young and Neal.

Ok. I just wanted to see what the stats say about UTs and NCSTs pass defense last year:

We were ranked 14th in pass defense last year:
177.8 ypg
14 td
10 int
91 1st downs allowed

NCST was ranked 58th:

219.5 ypg
15 td
27 int
116 1st downs

So I looked at rushing just to see if we got rushed on more (which we did):

We were ranked 72nd
162.7 ypg
17 td
100 1st downs

NCST was 42nd:
132.4 ypg
19 td
86 1st downs

So overall, our defensive strength matches up well against their offensive strength (they were ranked 110 in rushing yards, we were 120). On the other hand, their defensive strength doesn't actually look that good when you factor in the competition.

While past results don't guarantee future performance, I think that we can all agree that it would be hard for us to be worse than last year. I don't know how different NCST looks compared to last year, but on paper, I like our chances in the passing game.

From the video I've seen of Amerson, it appears to me that he is an athletic player who simply takes advantage of poor throws.

Even on the INTs where he makes a nice play on the ball, the QB threw a terrible pass. He is a factor but let's not get carried away. There's no way he would lead the country in picks if he played in the SEC.

Run the ball straight at them. Be bullies. Demorilize them. Don't play to their strength. Control the clock. Have them so tired by the start of the fourth quarter that they just give up.

While this strategy is obviously high risk high reward, I really think that we should come out and go after him.

My thinking is this: Burning their best player early in the game will demoralize them. It will also send a signal that we are going to come at them head on. They may also be forced to alter their defensive gameplan by sending a safety over to help (which they may not plan on doing).

When I say attack, I don't just mean passing, but rushing also. Run some plays his way and rough him up a bit straight away. Let him watch Young sprint by him while CP is laying him out. Have Neal truck him on purpose.

I know that it may sound crazy, but when a team has a singular strength, and we match up well to that strength, then we should attack it with everything we have.

Thoughts?

Brilliant ! Go right at their 1st round draft choice ! I love it . I glad teams did not do that to us when Eric Berry was here ...could you imagine how they would have shut him down. Play to their strengths rather than our own ...revolutionary .

Genius! Compare Eric Berry to some guy from the ACC.

Playing with fire. Dude is legit and in a game like this, one turnover could be the dagger that kills us.

Seriously.

Hunter is coming off ACL injury. He's not 100% mentally yet, I don't care what he says. NC State has enough weaknesses on D to attack elsewhere.

I can't figure you out man. You seem like a reasonable guy. Do you really think that we are suspect against NCST? That is a sincere question.

I understand that last year was last year, but how did you feel going into the Cincinnati game? They were on par with NCST as far as talent goes and we were way less talented than we are now.

Yes. Until I see us run the ball successfully, and see how the 3-4 D does, you can't trust this team yet. I have UT winning anyways.

I felt good going into Cincy. I thought 14 point win.

NC State is a solid football team. Are they world beaters? No. However, they have a senior QB with a good O-Line, an above average D, and some playmakers. There's questions about UT that need to be answered before I can buy into this team.

You are going to see a lot of vanilla football.

TE up the seam.

ISO running game - counters, draws (not much outside)

Skinny posts, slants, 5-7 yard outs, drag unders, etc.

It will be a controlled offense. Balanced.

I truly think this will be the case. I think the zone d and the blitzing lends itself to this type of play and I think Chaney prefers this type of play as well.

Also, I should rephrase: We won't get those results against anybody, including Akron and Georgia State.

It was just based on assumptions. I think our run game will be improved, but it's not going to be great.

I agree
No its not going to he great. Get it straight vols. We need to pass eary and often and use our run game to take pressure of the pass and set up play action. If we run the ball 50 times like it seems like everyone on here wants, that 50 times our play makers bray, hunter and cp arent touching the ball.
Lets get the ball in the best players hands

Pedal to the floor! Were not boring a++ alabama.
Dooley said in a int. a week ago "we are not a i formation pound you all game kinda team"
I want to see us up tempo pass it all around
Its who we are watch!
