Atlanta Braves Thread VI

Honestly, I think a team in the AL would love to take a flyer on Mac.

I love Gattis. Dude obviously can play at MLB. But, it's risky to trade Mac, a top flight offensive catcher when healthy, for him. I think Gattis is going to be a really good player...but the key is 1) It's not 100% and 2) He's still a rookie catcher.

Really, I don't know what the exact answer is.

If they're in the market, with what little they have to offer, it probably isn't for McCann. Scioscia is weird with catchers, too.

They also don't need a DH.

I like your Rays idea. They have plenty of prospects to spare, and Mac gives them somebody at catcher/DH to protect Longoria, kind of like Victor Martinez with the Red Sox.

He's certainly a better hitter than James Loney, too. And they don't have to pick up the option.

Idk what the return would be, though.

If it's apparent to other teams that Gattis is your guy thus trying to move McCann why would anyone give up anything for a guy you'll more than likely DFA or release eventually?

Ol Vic is with the tigers.. And struggling.

I know. I was talking about when Martinez was with the Sox and he caught about 110 games and played first/DH too.

I hope he can get going. Hunter offsets him some, but they still need that bat. He hasn't played in a year, so he deserves some time.

lol at them DFAing McCann.

Why does anyone ever trade for someone that will be a free agent, then?

In the end, I don't see McCann getting traded. He'll get the bulk of the catching duties, but more like a 60/40 or 75/25 split and Gattis will get time in LF and 1B as well, maybe 2 starts per week at C, and 1 each at 1B/LF.

Somebody, IMO, would go get Mac for three reasons (if he's 100%):

1) He's a left handed bat with power.

2) He's a vet with tons of experience behind the plate.

3) Even if Mac never returns to 2008-2011 Mac, he still can help you out at the DH spot.

It's not like we'd get a top 25 prospect for him, but somebody would give up something for him. You can't release him while he's still owed $12M. At this rate, you just platoon him and Gattis. Hell, Mac still provides value for Atlanta.

This, personally, is what I would do.

Also, let's not forget Freeman's injury. He should be fine, but damn it oblique injuries linger forever.

I am fine with Gattis, not hating on him at all, but idk if the dude can play LF. If JUps is resting, that'll be Johnson.

With constant interleague there will be a litttttttle bit more DH opportunity, too.

He's a free agent after the season. There's nothing yet this year to show that he has any value at all as a starting catcher. If it's clear the Braves have moved on from him what kind of market could you reasonably expect?

I agree with everything you said if he can show he's 100% healthy. No argument there.

You're acting like people never trade for guys who are upcoming free agents that might help their team?

I'm a believer that Gattis would have been the opening day LF if they hadn't traded for Justin. Justin can always slide over to RF once a week also.

I think his point is that if Mac is hurt and no one wants him, would there be a chance ATL DFA's Mac.

This is an impossible thing to consider right now. Really have to wait until the trade deadline to make a judgment.

I'm putting McCann DFA chances somewhere near 0.0%. Trade chances are in that same neighborhood unless he proves he's healthy/productive and another team calls with an offer than Wren can't refuse, which, as NATI suggested, why would anyone offer much in return when it's likely that McCann is finished in ATL after this season?

I like roster flexibility as well. I guess Laird goes the DL forever, or gets released? I don't see them releasing someone they just signed. No way you put J Blaze on waivers though.
