Freeman has put together 2 back to back very productive seasons.

Heyward has not. I also noticed that in his rookie year Heyward walked 91 times in less ab bats than last year when he only walked 58 times. Tells me pitchers found some weaknesses in swing or found pitches he can't lay off of. I'd like to see the walks go up and K's come down unless he starts hitting 40 homes runs in which case the K's wouldn't matter as much.

Even with the down year because of injury, his weighted runs created is basically the same as Freeman's. Mix in his ability on the bases, and GG defense, I tend to side with Jason. Hopefully its never a either/or situation.

Cingrani gonna stay up Nati?

Weighted runs created? What the heck does that even mean?

All I know is that he followed up his rookie year by hitting .227 and last year his OBP was down to .335 after posting a very solid .393 his rookie year.

None of this is a knock on Heyward. I think he is a very good player and an overall great for the game. However, I'm just trying to put myself in a GM's shoes and look at all the facts I have in front of me currently.

Except like I said, Heyward has not shown that he can put together productive seasons. Also, did you miss our conversation about how Freeman is the second coming of Keith Hernadez at first base?

And again, let's see Heyward steal 20+ bases for more than one season before we act like he's the next Vince Coleman.

The best first baseman in the world is still nowhere near as valuable as a great RF.

Freeman has been more consistent so far. Heyward's ceiling is much higher. Which one you'd rather lock up depends on how you feel about risk and reward.

Corderelle Patterson's "ceiling" is probably higher than anyone in this year's draft but he barely went in the first round.

While I agree with you about Heyward it's not a wise decision to sign a player long term now while he's still cheap and you have no idea if that ceiling will ever be reached. That is my only point in this discussion.

If the Braves wait until it's clear that that ceiling will be reached, then they won't be able to afford him. I don't disagree with your basic point, but A) this is an environment in which salaries are going to inflate tremendously over the next few years, and B) the Braves' awful TV deal will make them unable to keep up. If I were Frank Wren I'd be eager to roll the dice on both of those guys right now while I still can.

There are legitimate concerns about whether Patterson will ever be able to actually play the position he was just drafted for. Worst case (barring injury) for Heyward is a poor man's Darryl Strawberry. That's still pretty good.

I actually agree with you. I said the same thing last year on here in one of the old threads and got roasted.

Edit: Not an indictment on Black Jesus. I just really really think F5F is going to be a terrific batsmith and very steady.

Daryl Strawberry made 8 straight All-Star games starting at the age of 22. He also averaged 90+ RBI's during that same time and almost 30 HRs as well.

You may be absolutely correct in your assertion but guys who had 1 or 2 good years only to never be heard from again are literally a dime a dozen in the big leagues.
